what is the difference between nominal horsepower and brake horsepower, really confuses me sometimes, thought id try and clear it up!

I looked it up once and found that horsepower is the general unit of power, whereas brake horsepower is the horsepower after drivetrain losses, i.e power at the brakes. However you get "BHP at the flywheel" quoted sometimes so i'm not 100% that that's correct :wtf:

100% confused lol.


you dont get Kw and BKw so HP and BHP can be used as the same things too... ie no difference as far as we are concerned

"technically" coining the term brake horsepower means its after the engines own losses (ie friction, pumps, drive belts, pumping losses etc) so its valid for flywheel as that is the BHP for that engine.. but HP is fine to use too.
