Went round to Sheperds to try and fix his computer - bloody stupid it is.

F-Disked and Formatted both drive C; and D;
Re-installed windows.

Everything seemed to be working as it should at this point until it came to installing the device drivers for the hardware.
It would ask you to insert the Win 98 CD-ROM, even though it was already installed - browsing for the right file on the cd-rom didn't work either.

I tried copying the entire Win98 CD-rom drivers folder onto the hard drive and telling it to use that - but it still asks for the cd-rom again while it is still sitting in the drive.

Cannot be a cd-rom problem as it installed windows fine.
I have never seen a problem like it - it is crazy.

Anyone who can help - contact me or sheperd.

lol good old windows 98. when it installs it creates like a temp drive causing all your drivers apart from C: to get moved up a letter!

So d: becomes e:

now this causes mega problems for installing new devices as it looks to the moved on letter to install the device drivers.

u can change the assigned drive letter in the CD-Rom properties to the one above it like it would prob be f:?

or what i did was install windows - from windows so u over write, so it doesnt create this temporary drive and it uses the current windows settings.

hope this helps

The problem is mate - it just wont play the game.
You tell it exactly where to find the drivers and even though it knows where the cd-rom is - it asks you to insert the cd again anyway.

Very strange.
Never seen anything like it.

It knows it has a cd-rom drive and it knows where it is... but it wont use it to find the drivers - you can browse around it and look at it through explorer and my computer - but it just doesn't work.

Didn't try installing windows again while windows was already on though...

SO... Sheperd - stick your windows disk in and run setup from the cd drive while you are in windows see if that works like davo said. Worth a go i suppose.

How is the drive partioned? Do an fdisk and remove any secondary and dos partitions.

wisewood

the drive is just set up as is.
there are physically 2 hard drives.
drive c and drive d.
both set as maximum disk space.

ok its a glitch in windows "Shitey"8 and can be caused my a number of reasons

first thing - when u tell it where the CD is it DOES work right? just it asks for the CD everytime?

if so when the insert CD dialog appears it should have a path at the bottom say D:\win98 or maybe even D:\ not too sure

anyway thats where its lookin for the files and im guessing they aint actually there as thats a HDD partition on somthing

it occurs becuase when 98 installs it uses a ramdrive for temp files and this nudges the CD rom up a letter BUT the code to bring it back down after install doesnt function correctly

when u know the path u can do a registry search for the path and once u find it change it to reflect the new path ie cd rom will prolly be E:\ now

the only thing is u need to change the correct one

open the registry and click the second tree down (miss classes out) do a search for the string u found above were its actually lookin for the fiels and it should pull up some results - change and that would seem to be to do with the setup cd like "InstallationPath" or "SetupPath" or "CDPath" just use common sense and only change keys that are pointing to the wrong place (ie where its lookin for the files to start with)

that should cure the problem if not then junk 98 and go for win2k or winxp
as both are FAR supirior to the 10year old mess that is 98/ME

your lookin for a key named summat

Ooooh may be able to answer this one.
When it asks for the cd click the browse button (and u shud b able to navigate around an tell it where to find the drivers)
Direct it to the cd then open the folder called win98 on the cd and click ok.
It should now find the correct driver itself and work, cos this is the folder on the cd that contains all the relevant files.

If this has been said already then just ignore me, if not ave a go (if i made sense)

under normal circumstances that is the right answer mate - i tried that last night. was having none of it.

Another thing i just thought of that happened with mine (i know it sounds silly but) the cd was dirty and it wouldnt have none of it, i cleaned the cd and it worked, if this dont work the cd may be boned altogether

format drive d
copy the windows disk to drive d
format drive c
boot from floppy disk/ERD
install windows off the har drive

if this does not work its a serious hardware problem or a fucked up version on windows98.

and why the hell you putting 98 on, put xp/2000 on then i might b able to tell you easy methods to fix things as thats what i specialise in

What device are you trying to install here? I reckon the system is saying insert win98 disk or driver disk. When you put in the Win98 disk the device driver is not found on it so it asks again. You will probably need the driver disk for the device you are installing, it would have probably come with the computer or with the device if it was brought seperatly. Basically the driver is not on the Win98 disk and you will need the relevant disk. Hope someone figures it out soon!

Aragorn

meh i never even thaught of that :(

what driver is it looking for?

it should tell u somwhere?

wisewood
06-09-02, 09:58 AM
We were putting win98 on it as that is the version he has...

The drivers it is looking for - err, all of them!!!
graphics, sound, modem, LAN, everything...

None of them are working right... and Sheperd assures me the correct drivers are on the windows disk as this is where they came from last time.

Even if you point it to exactly the right folder - it still pops up and says insert windows 98 cd-rom. It is not a opup with a browse thing on it - although there is one in the background, it is just an error windows which says insert windows 98 cd-rom and an OK button.

I have had these problems before but nothing to this extent, it is as though the computer does not want to use the cd-rom drive unless it feels like it - and for such a mundane task as installing drivers, well, why should it do that.

Tried telling it to get the drivers from the dirvers folder i copied onto the hard drive and it still asked for the cd-rom and would not recognise it was there.

wisewood
07-09-02, 02:30 PM
can't be the partition mate - i set that up myself... nothing wrong there. Both drives were set as maximum...

Check it - go to FDISK and view partition information - both should say 100%

Are you positive it was a 20gig?

rob.slader
