Secured by four screws IIRC (one on each corner)

Glovebox out for access to passenger side speaker.

Either remove speedo clocks or fusebox for access to drivers side one.

Passenger one is dead easy, drivers requires a bit more patience and you will have to feel about for the screws. If you get stuck, you could just disconnect the wires.

my mk.2 - the speakers in the dash were held in by a twist lock style thing, had to rotate them 90 ish degrees to pop them out, mk.1's im prety sure they held in with the 4 screws.

in the mk2 as jimbob says the mk1 has two screws at the top if ur looking under and they just slide on to two clips, but to take them out of the passenger side just take out the glovebox and you'll see it with the drivers side its a little tricky all the switch in the dash and the fuse box will just need to be unclipped and moved out of the way then you can get a screw driver up there, but be carefull of ur eyes theres about 16 years of crap up there and its hurts ALOT!

You might need to prise the heater ducting out the way to give yourself more room - its quite flexible stuff though.

when my drivers side one split i took the clocks out and the light switch housing and i could get my hand down the back slightly enough to slowly twist it out

then again i do have "girly" hands as you all know lol

razorjacks rite there the ducting is well flexible use a 12 "plastic school ruler u can slot it above the ducting sqaush it down slightly twist the speaker carefully with a long flat screwdriver its well fiddly watch your fingers on sharps as for wires to em long driver again u should be able to flick um off jus done mine now re-fitted with tweeters from components
