lol did it cost alot? if you dont mind me askin

L33 LEG
08-05-08, 04:11 PM
nope, didnt cost much at all tbh.

£200 for the wood
£30 for the lights
£100 for the screen
£500 for the projector
£190 for the surround sound
£? a bit for paint
£200 for the carpet
£50 for the blinds
+ the bits i already had, ie. sky+/dvd players/recorders/consoles/dvds/settee

so for around £1300 and a lot of time and effort, you have a full room. its cheaper than some 42" plasmas ffs lol

the 328 cab on the other hand is sort of overheating like a bitch lol :( worst case would be the head is cracked but im not sure. whilst driving the engine pulls perfect and theres no **** coming out the exhaust and the oil doesnt seem to have any water in. but for whatever reason it wont bleed up correct, just constantly bubbles and after a while driving itl start to boil up. any ideas guys? i dont fancy changing the gasket on one of these engines tbh...

Sounds a bit like my son's 316i E30. Overheats like mad when sitting in queues, oil stays clean, no smoke from the exhaust... the only thing is it spits out alarming lots of coolant. Hmmm  And, as with yours, it runs like a good one.
Mechanic at BMW dealer tested the radiator, turned out it was leaking from the bottom of the radiator mounted expansion tank. First new Valeo radiator did this, now second new Valeo radiator does this as well. Motor factors says head gasket is gone. BMW mechanics say Valeo radiators are rubbish. But then an OEM costs 3x as much. :(

Have yet to run a compression leak test though, to see if the head gasket has gone out to lunch. Good luck with yours.

Cheers,
Niek

sounds a bit like mine then, although mine on idle isnt too bad. we thought it could of been the fan but then it did it whislt going about 70mph so we doubt its that. my rad seems fine, i did have a small leak from a pipe but i fixed that and i cant see it leaking from it since then. let me know how you get on with yours and hopefully its not the gasket
We thought the same thing, so we replaced the fan visco coupling thingie with a new one. No result. Also replaced the water pump, no result. Then tested the thermostat, works OK so again no result. Makes you wonder... We're going to book her in for a leak test and a coolant contamination test. And work from there. I'll keep you posted.

Nice alloys btw :thumb:

Niek

328's and 5's are known for head gasket problems along with cracked heads also when doing them there known for having problems with the threads for the head bolts and snapping them off just becarefull if it is the gasket when u do it

Just read through your whole thread, good read !! you've had enough cars hey mate, like me i suppose i just get boared of them too quickly so it's either keep it and spend money of modding it of do a deal for something else. You've had a varied selection of cars though hey, liking the novas the most tho, got a nice little set up by the looks of it now. As regards to the BMW problem it sounds really strange but rather like problem i had with a VW Corrado, it kept overheating to hell, it would just keep boiling up and spewing coolant everywhere !! i was just about to take off the head to investigate when i found out it was the seal on the expansion bottle cap !!! What a relief !! it may be somthing similar which is stopping the coolant being able to pressurise. Anyhow best of luck and look forward to the next update. p.s why the hell is everyone jibbering on about a Yaris ???

Did you get your E36 overheating issue sorted dude? My mates was the same, turned out to be theromstat.

Lee, just got our E30 back from our friendly BMW dealership. Here's what they discovered.

Coolant contamination test - came up clean, head gasket OK.
Compression leak test - no problem here either, pistons and valves OK.
Thermostat - works a treat, opens below 100 degrees celcius.
Waterpump - replaced by a new one recently so not suspect either.
Engine oil - as clean as it could be. (btw Castrol TWS which I rate highly)

Ergo: dealer is clueless, the only thing they say that could possibly cause overheating in traffic is the visco coupling of the radiator fan. It's got a wee bi-metal strip (if that's the word) which makes it hook up to the pulley when air flowing through the radiator reaches a certain temp. This strip could be slightly bent, causing the coupling to engage at a too high temp.

Not sure if your engine (M20 B28?) is equipped with such a fan. Or is yours an electric affair? Anyway, hope this helps.

Cheers,
Niek

Are the spring cups on the chassis leg solid?

Perhaps swap the springs over, see if it makes the drivers side sit lower, then you'll know somethings up with the springs themselves.

Edit, Maybe a buckled rear beam if it in fact can be buckled???

Did you try applying weight to the drivers side when the spring was out?

Also, notice your near side front tyre is flat, this might be causing the off side rear to sit high?

Bike carbs would give similar power gains as the twin 40s, but the 1.8 is down on power from the get-go so surely if power/speed is the target, then the 2.0 is the way forward...no?

p.s, sorry for the off topic comment, lol.

Do you not suffer ride quality or anything with that e30 being so low? I mean, surely it can't be speed bump or pothole friendly, i'd imagine worse than a nova. Looks lush though, and that 325 is lovely. :thumb:

that is quite possibly the most random question iv ever been asked  lol

i have absolutly no experience with either of those engine. but for unknown reasons iv personally never been keen on the 1.8s so i would pick the 2.0ltr on 40s anyday. but seriously, i am no use to your odd question mate.

Lacquer them, needs a heavy coat but be careful not to get any runs. It gives a good shine and makes it easier to wash brake dust off.

That's looking pretty sweet. The red goes well with the black. Is the engine just std or you tweaking it?

Nice mincing matey. How do you get away with engine parts on the carpet/jet washing oil off/ painting stuff etc at home? I LOL'd at you trashing the conservatory once. If that was me I would have been bollocked! lol

When you get your bay stitched get the feature lines welded up on your spokes!

I was sure when you had pics of your engine/cage in your room? that there was a cam cover on the carpet and an exhaust mainfold etc. I seen the head had cling film under it though lol

6 months with no rents, yeah I can see the attraction for you too mate lol

*edit. ah i see a light coloured wooden floor now. Still no excuse for having bits on the chair lol

update time :) sadly, there isnt much Lol :(

this weeks plan is to get the engine built up and in the bay and when i get paid next week i want to finish the car off and get the bits sprayed up for beginning of march. once the engine is in i can finish the rest in no time

last night we made a start. everything we planed to do failed lol hopefully wel get it sorted tomorrow and i can make the alterations to the engine and the bay to make it fit ready for putting in on thursday/friday.

still meaning to open up my shafts to see if they are 22 spline or not. if not, has anybody got any for sale? also after an exhaust but i might get one made up and some brakes. iv got a busy few weeks coming up lol

the coupe is a 325 mate, but cheers anyway :) and yes, the E30 is very gangster, you should see the respect the asain lads around here give me lol

hopefully therl be lots of progress 2moro. wanting al of the engine done and start putting it into the bay. but knowing my luck nothing will happen Lol

brainsnova
18-02-09, 01:11 AM
iv always said that the nova will be ready for beginning of march. things have took a step backwards because im waiting for my mate to help me build and fit the engine. he has a week off work next week so hopefully itl be in during that week.

and my 'garden' is pretty full at the moment. i dread to know what my neighbours think of me lol

i wouldnt bother about the neighbours as they have a ****ty caravan covered ffs lol burn it for them.

kc_08
18-02-09, 10:59 AM
ah 325 nearly there lol, haha! bet they love seeing you comming in that, bet people get abit nervous when you drive that. but yeah nice cars matey

L33 LEG
19-02-09, 12:41 AM
Lol brian, yes that caravan is a lot worse than my mess.

anyway, big update. been very busy today :) massive thanks for my mate paul who came round to help me build up the engine. there were quite a few problems at first but we kept on overcoming them and coming to the next problem, but before we knew it the engine was built up and we thought we may aswell chuck it into the bay!

engine after the timing had been done. i was given the wrong belt with the engine so had to buy a new one, most are £12 but for some reason one for a XE was £25! robbing *******s Lol.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova060.jpg

had to roll the car out of the garage so we had enough room for the engine stand. hoping to get the wings sprayed up for next week

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova061.jpg

got the engine outside and finished building it up. hopefully we havnt forgot anything cos itl be a right ball ache getting them on now. then put the loom on and all the pipes

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova062.jpg

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova063.jpg

then the gearbox went on

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova064.jpg

put the manifold on and double checked everything else. theres a few things that i am missing but il get them 2moro and can be added later. after alot of messing we finally got the car high enough to roll the engine under, took ages to line up the mounts though. i couldnt be bothered to cut out a box for the alternator so we just bashed it away, LOADS of room to spare. dont know why people bother doing anything other than that tbh Lol.

anyway, its sitting nicely in the bay and we got the front wheels back on and pushed it back into the garage, was very dark at this time so didnt take any pics apart from a quick one. i love it though, its sitting very low now and the engine looks so clean.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/nova%20rebuild/renova065.jpg

2moros jobs are to fit a few more things to the engine and get all the water pipes in. il get some better pics as it really does look so nice. iv got quite a bit to do to the car but il be finished in about 2 weeks time. so itl be on the road by then if the engine runs mint enough :thumb:

if it was metallic you'd be laughing as its easy to spray laquer to pefect shine without polishing but its hard to build up a solid colour as it doenst come out heavy and fast from a can.

to avoid a line after you prime it take the tape of and feather the end of it.then mask it alot higher and dont paint to the tape.same for laquer.

so there was no castle nut on the end of the stub axle shaft? he's an absolute trollop that lad! unbelievable some of the stuff he's done over the years.

definitely safe to say they dont call him gypsy dan for no reason haha!

did you ever see that red sr he had last year sometime? reg was J418PBT, he bought it in mint condition, run it for a few months then handbraked it into a kerb which bent the back axle then sold it to some fella without telling him about the bent beam, fella rung him back a coupla week later saying the beam had snapped through and he just put the phone down! ridiculous that lad...

and yea i'll definitely pop down and have a look sometime soon pal!
