just put in a 20 gig harddrive in my computer, wen windows tries to look for the dirvers for the display and sound card and stuff it says 'please enter the windows 98 cd-rom' even though i can brouse the cd and find the drivers....is it coz the cr-rom drive is bnow called e: instead of d: as it was b4?

Now i read it again - it makes a little more sense.

It is asking you to insert the windows 98 cd-rom as this is where the drivers will be for your hardware - insert the windows 98 cd-rom and it should find the necessary device drivers and then this should solve the problem. Remove the win 98 cdrom and place back in its case in a safe place.

Job done.
I think - if i understand the problem correctly...

nah ive done that, everytime it looks for the drivers it starts looking on the cd-rom then asked to place the cd in, which it's jsut been looking on!
Stupid computers, and engines!

Right then...
when you put the new hard drive in - did you just put it into the existing working system or did you install windows and everything again?

Sounds a bit wierd to me mate.

Right first things first here. Before Windows can see your new hand disk, it needs to be set up in the BIOS, this is where you press DEL to get into setup when you first turn on your computer. Once it is set up in there, Windows should see the hard disk as another device and will not need any additional drivers. I think you have got this far already. Now you are also setting up a new sound and display card, this is where Windows may be confused. When you last used the Windows CD, you had one less drive letter, with the additional hard disk you will now have a c: and a d: drive I expect, this will force your cd-rom to be on drive e: unless you have specified otherwise. Go into windows without loading the new hardware drivers and make a note of the drive letters, on your next re-boot it will ask for the cd for the new hardware again, over type the existing path (probably d:) with e: or the drive letter for your cd drive, that should sort it. If not type in the full path of where the file is that it requires. It's just windows remembering where the cd was last time it needed to load drivers. Good luck!

mine did this - thing is it asked for a different cd rom to the one I had! Was looking for different serial number :o

Ended up binning the whole lot and getting windows xp instead.

Other peeps have had to take their into a service centre - ok - unless youve downloaded tons of porn!

not that you will have of course Shephard!

See shepherd - same thing as i said... :D

if i were you i would set up the new drive as drive C: and the old one as slave and install windows onto the new one see it works that way around... you never know. then just transfer the programs across as and when...

well what drivers is it looking for?

wot i would advice is to copy the win98 disk to a directory on ur hard drive, as in a direct copy of everything

when it asks to insert the cd, it shud ask you to specify where the files are, and shud let you 'browse' for the files. you need to point it to the place on your hard drive where you copied these files!

also i would advice keeping this foler in place, this means that in the future if it needs any more files you dont need to go frigging about looking for your cd, and maybe having the same problem
