Over weight and immensely boring IMO, Engines arent bad but put it in something like a MK2 or a Mk1 and you have a totally different car.

Hard too find a nice 3dr with sensible miles, I would only consider a highline.

As above, id only consider the highline aswell. A mate of mine went from a Nova GSi to a Vr6, superb car but not as much horsepower as thye could have as standard. Sound lovely but the engines cost a bomb to rebuild! (as our mate found out lol)

the power isnt bad on them tbh, its the weight of the cars they weigh more thna the moon.

what would i be looking for when going to view one?
known faults etc?
i want reliability and smooth power which im to belive the vr6 will offer, surley i could get 200bhp from the standard 174 bhp it comes with?

Something in mind about the electircs on the VR6 being a cnut but wont swear to it.

Check out for clocking as most have been a few times by now.

My brother had trouble with the timing chains on both of his, and had to have them replaced. Bit of a bugger i beleive as the chain is gearbox end.

They run well enough :)

The gearchange is easily the worst aspect of these cars - extremely loose cable change! There are a few threads on VW Vortex about firming it up but none of them are really worth it IMO, just get used to it.

Remove rear VR6 badge for discretion. My standard 90k example made over 180bhp at two different RR's about a year apart. Happy days :)

I know the 16v have a chain between the two cams and one cam has an external pulley with a belt on, makes the cambelts very easy but chains an awkward swine,
Imagine the VR6 could be similar setup.

Also the woodruff key in the bottom pulley sheers off.

Allways get a HPi done, its just 1 of them cars, Check for rust, depending on the year they can rust quite a bit, check for noisy chains, not cheap to replace, allways try to get 1 with leather as nobody wants them with cloth, dont just go for a highline, you can find nicely spec'd ones out there like my non highline with full black heated recaro leather, far better than highline seats, Oh and they did a OBD1 and OBD2 model, early/late, early has plastic arch covers + grey bumper tops and they have 174bhp, the later ones have uncovered arches and are colourcoded, they are said to have a bit more power also,

I have 1 at the mo, its not as much fun as an xe nova/corsa but its so much better built, Mine is on Koni coilovers, 17's (soon to be 8.5 & 9.5x16's) and its drives sweet as, but i now cruise about unlike in the corsa,

Check out edition38.com there is also a mk3 section on there for more advice etc,

nice cars, my partner has a vr6 highline. pretty quick, sounds great. good for cruising on the motorway but v. poor mpg around town! DO NOT buy an automatic, as soon as this one was bought the gearbox went and cost alot to fix.

imo the only good thing with the vr6 is the noise, just check out these vids

And the fact the drivers electric windows dont start sticking after 100k miles, the rear arches dont disintergrate, the better build qaulity, the fact you know you stand a high chance of surviving a 70mph crash in one, the doors locks are stronger then cheese etc etc etc lol lol lol

they are nice cars, but prefer the MK1, 2 and 4. I dont really like the headlights on the mk3, there is something about them. Get a Jetta i recon and put the VR6 lump in it. :thumb:
