hi there i was just wondering if there was any way of telling if my pistons are standed or not with a compression tester or will i have to take the engine to bits

In theory yes, in practice no. Hope that clears it up.

Different shaped pistons will alter the compression of course, however so does skimming, worn bores and valve timing. There are too many variables to pin any results to certain piston type.
