Does it run for longer if you hold the throttle open?

General Baxter

yep but only if i pump the throttle, if i hold it open in the same place just dies

spec - 1.4 block, 1.3 large valve head, kent 300 cam, weber 34/32, ported 1.3 inlet manifold

the red jet is the only one that works, when the throttle is pumped
nothing comes out of green at all
theres fuel in the blue bit

Ignition timing?

right found on problem, idle adjuster on the main barrel was comming loose up on reving, now sorted, just ticks over at 1500rpm or it cuts out

Fook me you got that fitted quickly lol

Probably idle mix then if it wont idle any lower.
That red jet is the pump/accel jet, so only that should pump fuel out.
The others just put "droplets" into the incoming air.

EDIT-A kent 300deg cam? That wont be helping the idle situation lol

well this is how far iv got so far, it puts out more black smoke then my diesel did

p.s dont mind the nut in the zorst i droped it down the down pipe when fitting my manifold lol

Common problem on these is the fuel return.. The carb has one but the car doesnt.

Any gen?

im sure the 34/32 dont have a return, my std 1.2 has one, do i just blocked it off lol

Aye thats right Baxter, the 32/34 dont have a return.
Perhaps a pressure regulator is needed.....

I didn't need a pressure reg on mine as the pump only just gave enough pressure as it was! Sounds like the jets definately need checking, I've lost the bit of paper mine were written down on which is a shame because I had a similar spec.

The return pipe, just stick a bolt in the end of it with a hose clip on top to seal it off.

try disconnecting the fuel line from the pump to the carb. the engine should run like a singing angel if the problem is indeed with the fuel pressure. it will run enough with whats in the bowl (just to see if it makes a difference i do not want you to waste your nova money on a reg when it may not be the fault!!!) also just as the carb runs dry, if it starts to run well just before it dies, this may indicate the mixture is far too rich. the 300deg cam will not make it smooth as the pressure pulses in the manifold will not make the fuel atomise nicely and the vacuum signal will be weak at low revs (idle) perharps if you tweak the timing a little to give it more advance it will help compensate for this. but being a dizzy, it will knock the timing out all over the rev range.

the high over lap may be causing lots of fuel/air to get pulled right through the engine and out the exhaust, so it may be you will have to live with it slightly richer at idle...but it should be a lot better than what you have described and what i have seen in you home movie!!

i hope you and your nova feel better soon!

From what i remember of the days whn i was running a 1.3 on a 32/34 it had a canister on it to provide the return, was black on mine, but have seen some with yellow ones. Never ran a fpr and it was fine. Will try and find pics

My bad, the 32/34 has no return, so you plumb the cars return into the feed, before the carb with a T-piece.

make sure the T piece is as close to the carb as possible, if the return T provides an easier flow path than towards the carb. you will not get a high flow through the carb when demand is high.
