Could I put a 1.8 16v ecotec lump in my '90 SR?

Same as installing most other 2.0 engines (mechanically).

I'd expect a 1.8 16v to have an onboard immobiliser within the ECU, so use the ECU from that engine aswell as the key & transponder in order to make it run.

I'd use an old school F16 gearbox too, as the F18 isnt that great. Good opportunity to use a lighter flywheel.

rubbish.
thats like saying theres no point balancing your wheels because its not done with the wheel on the hub/driveshaft.

any removal of mass from a rotating assembly is going to reduce its inertia and make for better accelleration.

just not the same old same old id say go for it. theres too many redtops around now imo

Redtop is less hassle because theres no immobiliser crap on them.

If you want to be different go ahead, will watch you fade away in the mirrors

small block x18xe1 (mechanical throttle body) will fit on standard nova mounts, and the wirings not all that hard. 130bhp straight out of the box. Go for it!

I thought all small block 1800 16v's were fly by wire, and used multiplex wiring etc etc?/\

Oh, and to the original poster of the thread, you could of used a thread title with a meaning :p

Nope, in the vectra b, and early astra g they were named the x18xe1 engine code, the fly by wire 1.8 small blocks are z18xe. The x18xe1 engine runs a throttle cable, and has only has a tps in the tb iirc. You'd still have to overcome the immobiliser issue, but as we both know ad, it's not that hard!

Cool.
That would be a nice engine swap then

Are these a similar weight to the C16XE/X16XE and can you run an F13/15 with them?

yeah almost entirely the same size/dimensions etc. As far as i can remember they ran an f17, so they could run on b/b driveshfafts, but i've seen a couple of 1.8 astras on small shafts, so i can't see any reason why not.

Sweet!! Where on the block is the Engine ID stamped?

John

on the front of the block web, where it meets the gearbox. It's easily identifiable because it has a throttle cable.
I've never personally seen this done, so do i'd advise people interested to do a bit more research before podding out bucks for a pony!
