I want to convert my Nova Saloon to RWD,is this gonna be possible?
If So,what will be easier; Using the engine, box and running gear from an Omega, or sticking my XE in the boot :) ?

XE in the boot. Or XE up front with Escort Mk1/2 running gear.

XE in the back would be "easiest" but its still gonna be a ******* of a job.

Find a FCKD Chevette, Buy a grinder, a welder and a Crate of your favourite Alco Drink, then hire a skip.

rear engine = massive weight at the rear

pendulum effect will send you into a hedge quicker than you can say 'tankslapper' lol

front engine/ rear drive is a lot more work but would make a more usable car in the long run

LMFAO

Yeah, after a computer system designs the car to have the engine in that place.

I dont think a computer was involved at all in the development of the nova! Even if it was, it was designed to have the engine in the front :)

Be prepared for a strange handling car putting it in the back, and spending a lot getting the geometry and setup right.

The Nova was designed on computer, the broshures made a big deal about it. Think it was one of the first cars to be designed on computer too.

Said computer was probably the size of a room and had less processing power than my N95 lol

Not interly accurate Lee lol The humble Nova was first designed on an anchient version of tetris. I think it was called "Lego Duplo" :D

RIght so its still got the ill looking Golf front end?

Lee
23-04-08, 05:29 PM
Aye, Chip's is a good example of how much setup you need to do to make it perform well. Definately not the wrong way to do it, but as I said, expect to spend a good amount of time and money getting it to handle.

so we've come to the conclusion the lump will be better in the front.
will it be easier using the engine, box and running gear from an omega then,or can the XE be converted to rwd?

As said, your best off using Mk2 escort running gear, and expect to do a load of fabrication ( there would be a load of fabrication either method anyway)

Austin on here has done one, he spaceframed the entire front end.

Austin is my Hero, and thats no ****, His Nova has to be one of the best yet.

TBH, making the Nova a twin engined motor would be easier than making it a rear wheeler and hosting the engine in the front. Space in the engine bay is going to be a Major issue.

They are all mid engined. The only manufactuer that have successfully made a good handling rear engine car is Porsche, and they are still hairy and require alot of skill to get most out of them. Its also taken them 50 years to get it to where they are now!

Ok, say you twin XE it, thats circa 300BHP in a circa 900kg car, small short wheel base, and you honestly think you wouldnt get wheel burning sideways action??

Google Rally Cross, Mondello Park Ireland and get some info on the single engined 4wd Novas there.

but I don' want 4wd,or 2 engines,I want a single engined rwd nova!!
If I want 4wd I'd buy a calibra or cav turbo :D

I once took a tape measure to a mk2 escort & a nova saloon. in standard form, their track & wheelbase is virtually identical......

so find a mk2 escort & remove the top bits.

then strip a saloon shell right down.

cut off the bits you don't want & fit whats left onto the escort floorpan.

the trouble is that decent mk2 escorts are worth shed loads of money & nova saloons are not.
