View Full Version : XE build (finally!)

Just realised that I haven't got a WIP thread on here.
Currently turning my J reg mk2 1 litre into an XE. Basically removed the 1lt engine, fitted a 1.6 GSi lump, never used it, stripped it again, fitted a new front panel and thats about it so far.
Heres a pic of the paint going on, using a genuine vaux colour. Try have a guess those who don't know. Not laquered yet...

Updates:
Mostly stripped the engine down last week, crank coming out tonight. Don't worry about my next door neighbour, it was late and we had been consuming plenty of coffee!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/hendrix/17042008098.jpg
and the inside now stripped
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b339/cavvie/marcs/DSC01798.jpg
Hopefully this will all be painted by the weekend and the lump rebuilt within a couple of weeks :thumb:
andy why is one seat bracket cut of and not the other?

20-05-08, 03:02 PM
Not much been going on lately.
Engine is pretty much all rebuilt with new components including rings. Bore hone and head ported and polished.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/hendrix/17052008127.jpg
Think I've been sold a duff batch of paint though :-( as its reacted AGAIN!
Gonna complain next time I'm at the paint shop and see what happens (if anything).
Hopefully lobbing the engine in the crate over the bh weekend
I think the colour looks pretty cool :)
Plans for the engine, just a full rebuild?
hendrix
21-05-08, 12:47 PM
Full rebuild and laughing gas for now I think. Considering other options a bit further down the line but it will do for starters.
Cheers for the colour comment :). Looks so nice in the sunlight
I thoguht youd sold this! Good work, pull your finger out and crack on for PV lmao
good work, i bought that grinder yesterday aswell lol
hendrix
21-05-08, 01:08 PM
Paul, I had two shells, this one and Sean (SRS1’s) old shell. I sold that one to Mike in Grimsby (think his thread is around somewhere). Then I put a Gsi lump in this shell but at the same time got an Astra Coupe Turbo so abandoned this in the garage. Then I got the silly idea a few months ago to go the whole hog and XE it and respray it after leaving it stood for over a year. lol Won't be at PV unfortunately as I've still got a fair bit to do but fingers crossed it will be at VBOA at Billing in July.
Draper, it’s a pretty good grinder tbh and really cheap at £15 or whatever it was!
hendrix
21-05-08, 01:12 PM

20-08-08, 01:06 PM
Update,
no pics as it doesn't look too much different as been suffering from major skintness.
Sorted the electrical problems and tps problem out and got it running now. Also fitted exhaust manifold and rad. unfortunately the system I've got doesnt mate to the manifold as the flange is in the wrong place. Once that gets rewelded I can fit the exhaust. New CV's for the shafts this weekend and also tidying up all the wiring.
:thumb:
hendrix
06-09-08, 06:47 PM
Today's progress. No pics yet (surprisingly) lol..
Made a hole in bulkhead and wired all XE wires into the back of the dash.
Fitted coilovers front and 90mm springs at the rear
Fitted driveshafts
Set-up gears
Fitted new ball joints
Tried to mount the exhaust....and failed lol. Centre section and middle section are the same bore :tard:.
Anyways, its looking nice and low and the wiring is finally finished :thumb:
Cheers for the help Robbo who was only meant to come round for 5 mins to sort my exhaust flange lmao lol
So does it move under its own steam now then?
hendrix
06-09-08, 06:59 PM

You might not wanna make a habit outta spraying without a mask.
Doing it enough will result in Dementia - Irreversible brain damage matey.
novarobbo
23-10-08, 10:08 PM
dont worry thats the last of it for now.. got 2 wings to do but im wanting to do them outside in the fresh air then thats it till i get my mates air fed mask off him (for the lacqure and my car as its all 2k).. but im guessing water based paints arnt to bad to spray without a mask.. obviously arnt reccommended but not like solvent based stuff
p.s. im giving in on painting after this car and my car is finished.. as above its not doing me any favours.. :thumb: i havent done 'alot' of painting in my time but i cant be bothered with risking it anymore, ive been thinkin it for a while not just as you have posted it.. 3 years of no use! lol cant even get a job doing the f**king thing any way haha
hendrix
23-10-08, 10:24 PM

[quote=Spudly]Does it move under its own steam?[/quot
Yes, it does run under it's own steam, just needs outside assitance to stoplolIt's not the prettiest of engines just now, all the ally components are under attack, white dust covering them.
I'm sure MK999 will be along shortly to give us the chemical composition, reasons for it occuring and how to keep it from happening in the future:p
hendrix
14-02-11, 08:52 PM
hahaha yeah there are no brakes at all...yet.
Its a shame cos when I put the engine together everything was so clean and tidy.

New engine ready for transplant - no idea on whether it ran or not, had been stood for at least 3 years

id probally reface the roof mate and hand block with a 320 then reprime with it taking as much filler
hendrix
31-05-12, 11:29 PM
we rubbed it down with 800 wet and dry and it looks about ready for painting on. Drop by if you are in scunny tomorrow
davidfox280585
31-05-12, 11:30 PM
i will do what time you in?
hendrix
31-05-12, 11:30 PM
oh and we did rub that filler down quite a bit before priming
800 wet and dry, what you painting it with?
hendrix
31-05-12, 11:36 PM
So mechanically not much left to do
Fitted new fuel line, got the gear linkage sorted, back brakes now don't leak and the fuel tank vent pipe has been renewed.
Had to send the calipers back to hispec as there is a bit of a problem with them so just waiting to hear from them how much its gonna cost me.
Also the exhaust is on (with many thanks to Novalicious) and not leaking aside form a small one where the manifold joins the centre section.
i will do what time you in?
All day I'd say, just text me.
800 wet and dry, what you painting it with?
a roller lol.
Why whats wrong with that? Its ready for scotching tomorrow for paint.
way over the top. i dont know of any paint that wont cover 500
davidfox280585
31-05-12, 11:39 PM
i would personally have just finished in 320 then primed, ive seen people paint 320 grade but i prefer to finish in 800 also, makes the deprep better
davidfox280585
31-05-12, 11:41 PM
way over the top. i dont know of any paint that wont cover 500
correct if doing it as 2l solid though iirc its base and lacquer metallic so 800 would be a lot better as the metallic will lay better imo
at work we paint onto 320 on a solid and 500 for metalic, thats crap waterbase as well
hendrix
31-05-12, 11:43 PM
yeah its base and lacquer.
I don't really know much about paint but I do trust robbo 100% in what he's doing
davidfox280585
31-05-12, 11:49 PM
at work we paint onto 320 on a solid and 500 for metalic, thats crap waterbase as well
id go with that luke, 500 seems fine enough for base but like you say direct gloss will cover perfect over a 320 grade,
also what happened with the turret chopped saloon?
still here will get done eventually lol
hendrix
01-06-12, 06:13 PM
Ran up to temperature today, rad fan kicks in so another job off the list.
Just need to stop the centre section exhaust leak, get the caliper back and a few bolts and its just about ready for MOT mechanical wise.

Update again!! Becoming a bit of habit this lol.
So this weekend of jubilee celebraitions has certainly moved the nova on towards the finish line:
1. Cream injectors fitted in place of the blues (still lumpy though, dizzy cap and new plugs next)
2. Dave kindly re-did the brake lines for me.
3. Burgo arrived late Sunday evening ready for a days mincing on Monday, got quite a fair bit done too. Exhaust is now on and in the right place and has only a slight leak which just needs buzzing with the welder. Also now have a working hand brake involving a few 'modifications' :D
4. Today was paint day, Robbo arrived this morning and after a bit more prep it was ready for paint. Result came out very well for what was done on a cool day in a garage full of crap with a Netto compressor and an Aldi paint gun haha

Andy get it finished isn't a bad job when looking at other builds you also have to consider there budget not just the end result and for your budget it's top notch, its like my van never going to be the best or the fastest but for the budget I've spent it's a good car
it's painted, has the engine fitted and half the interior in from what I can see... it's nearly finished isn't it?
As for the build quality, compare it to someone without the ability to do the job themselves, you're looking at £800-1000 maybe for the same kinda paint job, probably around the 2k mark to look over the engine and put it in at least, any interior work on top. No doubt by the time you add up all the little hours here and there you're looking at a 6k+ build without factoring in anything you've spent on parts.
Might seem common if you look around the net but not many people have the money/skills/access to do an engine conversion and fully respray a car.
Not sure I can be bothered with this anymore............
Don't be a chump...
As said, its looks 80% done! First time i've seen the painted pics, and that colour is h'actually awesome! Get it finished, T&T'd, then kick its ass! They aren't be fastest, but they are fun and can annoy most cars on the road :)

hey guys,
thanks for the words of encouragement. means a lot actually :)
Its not far off at all really, needs panels painting, windscreen putting in and bumpers on, then its ready for MOT.
I know burgo wants to see it finished as he's put a fair amount of graft into it (legend) and i certainly would be nowhere near without his help earlier in the year :thumb:

budget wise, it stands me at cost of paint and the initial 223 quid for the car and not much else. the rest of the stuff is from various nova's ive broken over the years and used to fund the build.

If you put it like that, it really is worth finishing.
Its not as if youve had it sitting on the driveway on axle stands for 2+ years & got parts of it all over the house like a certain other mincer I know who decided to sell both his Nova & Corsa projects because hes a lazy mofo & CBA to finish them lol lol lol
Even though at some point Ill be redeming myself with a mother of all projects. But thats another story...

Another update (no pics tho) bonnet pull cable has been removed, aero catch bonnet clamps have turned up, 9" slim fan fitted and wired up, old injection return is now blanked off, completely plumbed up so ready for water/anti freeze, wired up coil (i think correctly) had a brown black and a green.
Ive gone brown - earth
Black - ignition live
Green - rev counter?
Is that right for the carb set up? Ive tried turning it over but dont get any rev counter movement or does it need to be 100% running?
