When I got my L Reg GSi I was told there were only 12 L reg GSI's registered. Not sure if this is the case but thought it might my good to see if we could group all the known L Reg GSi's on one thread.

Although now about five years since I owned it, this was mine:

yeah it did. Appeared on ebay not that long after i'd sold it (maybe 12 mths or so) with the 2 litre conversion. Not sure if it sold or not. Think it is still on 1.6 at the DVLA and last I looked was on a SORN. Really nice car.

The only reason there on an L is by the time they were sold of the forecourt, the new reg had been released. My K reg SR was built in 1990, but wasnt sold until early 1993, so it was was sitting around waiting to be sold & registered for like 3 years lol

Im sure when i first got into novas, there was a red gsi for sale on autotrader, online, it was on an M plate! i remember the front and rear shots of the car, the reg deffo started with an M, and it stated in the ad, the fact it was a very late M plate car!?

it mite have been longer than 4 years ago mate , i remeber he done a good bit a welding to it i.e strenthing but the front wings were fukt due do the mud flaps collecting water you only noticed this up close , but it was to quick he done loads to it he sold it cos he culdnt afford to run it after the conversion , keep the soft stars for another car , dont have a clue were it went kinda stopt talking to him when the nova sold

This Red GSi was mine prior to yourself I think, at the time I was in sales for a Vauxhall dealership and it was Vauxhall that told me only 12 GSi's went on the UK on L Plates!, have now own my own garage just outside Aberdeen specialising in Vw/Audi, i have had and have loads of cars but I would have a big cheque if this GSi was for sale somewhere in the UK.

that was a while ago now - may be 10 years since i purchased it from you? In fact, it might actually be 11 years as someone tried to steal it from the hospital carpark when my son was born, and he's almost 11 now.

it appeared for sale again not long after i sold it with an xe conversion, older style mud flaps etc. emailed the chap selling it but never heard back.

I have been meaning to update this for a while so here we go.

In terms of tracking the L GSi's this thread has been priceless but it is hard to cut through the 10 pages of posts and "Its only a Reg plate" comments so i have collated all of the information in an easy to digest table shown below.

As you can see there is a few of blanks to fill but its a good start. Would be most grateful if anyone can provide any evidence to assist filling in the missing pieces of information.

So a couple of interesting facts.......


- 11 out of the claimed 12 have been found and verified with the DVLA which leads me to suspect the well known claim of 12 registered L reg GSi's is true. This is what i have always believed but not had the hard evidence to prove. However I would love to find the final piece of the puzzle.
- 2 Silver, 2 white, 1 Grey, 1 red and the lime green C20LET are confirmed alive. Condition of all of the cars not verified.
- L302 LWR is believed to be the lowest mileage example left. Obviously can not be proven until we find number 12.
- I believe L26 LUM is the cleanest example left but am happy to be proven wrong (No Significant chassis welding). It did receive a cosmetic makeover in 2003 which included panels but no chassis welding and original arches remain. She is still in great shape.
- L26 LUM is the only L reg GSi on the road right now :) (Unless number 12 is out there somewhere.)


I would love to find the final car or any recent information or pictures on any of the examples above. If you have any information as to the registration of the vehicle it would be great to add it to the list.

I have created a dropbox folder with all of the images i have collected over the year. if anyone has anything to add or would like to view please PM your email address and i will add you to the viewing list. Your input would be very much appreciated.

So to finish the story........

I have tracked down the illusive car 12 -L820 XRG !!! Car is currently stored in Yorkshire where it has been residing since an auction purchase back in early 2003. The car has not moved since and doesn't look likely to in the near future either as the owner is firm on keeping the car. The car is also linked to Caroline Pennington who owned L26LUM from 2001 -> 2011.

So here is the completed list of cars. I have also added the registration dates of each car as obtained via the DVLA so I could work out in which order the last 12 GSi's left the dealers forecourts.
I was getting a little excited as L26 LUM is a very late registration but sadly not the final one to ever drive away from the dealership.
However LUM does sit in a respectable 3rd place and its great to know it was one of the last 3 to ever be sold.

So that's the list complete unless there is a 13th car out there somewhere. As far as i am concerned its case closed but these things always seem to have an exception to the rule somewhere along the line.
I will keep hunting for updates on the unknown owners car until i have every owners contact details.

The nova above is the one I spoke to the old lady owner about few ago, she has owned from new, she won't sell at all for any money as her son has a car dealership and when she has finished with it he wants it for a show piece, but she still loves it, totally original car, she says it's the last register ed nova gsi ever! Bought from sand beck motors wetherby and still has plates, stickers etc, the car lives in otley area, was in collingham!

So to amend my comments above - Car 13 (Red GSi L577MYG) was NOT the last one sold. It was in fact the 7th to last. Car 14 L968 PRP was the last to be sold. I am sure this enhanced someone's Xmas day as this one was registered 23rd December 1993.

Some other facts from the data base....

-Car 2 L26 LUM is the last know example to have rolled off the forecourt and still be alive in standard form. Cars 1 and 14 are presumed dead :(
-Car 5 L566 NYG was registered before hand but is now a space framed track car project.
-Car 13 L577 MYG is the only known one owner example and hopefully can stay in the family for many years to come.
-Only 6 out of the 14 cars are alive with the standard engine still in place.

L968 prp was my mates car few years ago, he bought it from a guy in Beverley East Yorkshire, then it lived in tadcaster north yorks for couple years, was a very quick car when he sold it! And what an awesome xmas present for someone
