Oh My GOD, You got a Nova Bay Monster!!!! :O

Have you examined the engine mounts? Is there any play in the gear lever? Does the noise happen when the car is stationary or being driven?

could be:
water pump bearings
alternator bearings/ slip-ring
over tightened timing belt.
or broken/loose timing belt cover.
i cant remember if the 1.4s have an extra timing belt idle pulley that may need new bearings.

Or the flap in the pancake style airboxes.
Just have a tap, bash & poke around.

Asking people to diagnose a noise on a car over a forum with no pics, details or video's. Priceless!

If its there all the time, and its getting worse, and its definately a squeak, not a grind, id bet my bottom dollar its the cam belt pulley :)

If its more grindy than squeaky, check the aternator bearings, or could be the waterpump.

As craig said though, we're all clutching at straws here!
