I have painted the "vinyl" on my SR (as I've repainted the whole car, found that stone chips pierced the vinyl and paint underneath, inducing rust under the vinyl, over the years).Using a dark grey paint, was suppose to be a matt finish, but turned out gloss.
I painted up to the top of the where the rubbing strip would be, haven't decided whether to refit the rubbing strips or not

what paint did you use and how did u apply it, rattle can or spray gun?? would you use laquer afterwards aswell? im fairly new doin this:L:L
ive been this morning to price vinyl up but i think paint will be the dearer option but the best:D
what would be the best to do in my intrest remove the vinyl off the car then spray?
or leave it there obviously the paint will still get wreked with the vinyl on and the paint over the top if a stone hits the vinyl obviously it would damge the vinyl underneath
:thumb: thanks for the help anybody with anymore ideas would be most appreciated.

mk2 rubbing strips are a nightmare to refit, due to being very thin they bend very easy, only thing I could suggest is patience and a bit of tiger seal

i have took them off tonight and cleaned them up, i can see there some kind of foam/double sided sticky tape-on them and when i peel the foam off theres metal/aluminium on the back of the foam that usued to sick to the rubber/strip's before i peel'd it off the strip, do they come out of the factory with them on or is there some kind of tape that you can buy from shops, still stuck on what to use to stick them back on to the paint work

yeah they have come off with the tape  but ive choped the inch that i peeled off to see what held them on, as i didnt think it would be a good idea to take the aluminium off as its there to keep them rigid aint it?

if ya go to your local motor factors (an i dont mean halfords) you can get a double side tape that is exact replica of what was used from factory (ith the sponge), its what is used in the motor repair trade for reapplying badges/mouldings aslong as ya clean both surfaces with spirit wipe then it will stick for good till ya need to remove again.

Just get someone with a spray gun to paint black along the bottom then re-fit your rubber strips.

You say paint, but i painted the back of my gsi rather than buying vinyl and i wish i hadn't now. At least with the vinyl you can take if off if you change your mind rather than re-painting.

The vinyl was fully stripped off, I used 5mm 3M tape to mask off all the sections to match the original vinyl, e.g. round the door jams rear of the door, where the vinyl origonaly wrapped round.
Still have some overspray to remove. Was spray gun using 2 pack paint, had a filler to suppress the gloss finish, although it went on with a gloss finish. Colour was as close as I could get to the original vinyl.

Took a full day to mask, prep and paint.
Could use rattle cans I suppose, although not in 2 pack, I'm not the best paint sprayer in the world! maybe sombody better could advise!
Depends on what finish you want, rattle cans aren't as good but its cheap and easier than taking it to a bodyshop, look at my project, I got quite a good finish with rattle cans.
As for vinyl you can always go to a local graphics company as I did and get them to vinyl your doors.

*Royston* im sure ive asked you before but what colour did you use for your doors? Im deciding on either rover tempest grey again or peugout cossack grey.

I'll need to look it up, essentially it was industrial 2 pack with a matting agent, took a vinyl sample in and looked through the swatches, unfortunatly the thinner took the blue ink off the label, jud the impression to read, only needed @ 200ml of paint + thinner & hardener
Ah right, I thought it was a factory colour that you found that was a good match, not to worry i'll just get something of the shelf for mine.
