The clips are rivetted on from the factory afaik

Adam

As above.
And the skirts just "snap" onto the clips

I know you are going to fit yours so, I:

Put clips onto skirts, double sided tape on clips, stick it on, slide the skirt off the clips, and then you know where to drill the holes.

I spent ages trying to slide the skirts onto the clips before I realised they just click on :wtf: lol

Anyone got any pics to show me the clips on the car ?

My skirts wouldn't slide on they had to be pushed/hit/snapped on.

So they screw on through the wee holes at each end ?

I screwed mine as easier to remove than rivets.

Must agree, I did the same with mine, a run of Double sided Tape at the top of the skirt, just below the doors and they never budge, even after the odd rummage through a hedge.

Rivets for me on project aspirin.
I did have exact measurements with the intention of writing a guide but they are lost now.

My GTE had proper studs on the sills.

Measurements would be ace Matt. I'm going to rub down the skirts today and maybe spray them.

When you order the clips from Vaux, is there much of a wait?

EDIT: Does anyone have the part number for a set of these clips?

Nova lad i take it you used self tapping screws?

And Dod do you mean you used double sided tape to hold them on and thats it?

Dod

No, To hold them tight in place at the top to stop them moving about in the wind or at high speeds. Tek Screwed on from the bottom.

This is how i did mine. I used the double sided method and rivited them on. worked a treat I didnt even have to screw the undertheath ones in

Fair eniough Dod i was gonna say they wouldnt stay on long with just tape!

Doesnt anyopne get some kind of sealer round the top of them to stop water getting in and rotting the sill?

Dod
11-04-08, 09:55 AM
Na, just keep it well polished up before you fit them. I also silicone sealed round where the Tek Screws went to stop any moisture getting and Rotting the sills. 5yrs on and the Sills are Still A1.

fix

Fair enough, though i thought silicone was bad for paintwork? And what the hell are Tek screws?

Jcb

How does polisihing the sills before fitting make them less resistant to rust?

Dod
11-04-08, 10:56 AM
Well, if its polished up, it tends to repell water, so the water is more likely to run off the sills as opposed to sticking and bedding in

Silicone is bad for Paintwork if you're spraying it. It repells the paint and causes imperfections. When the paint has been on the car for as many years as a Nova has had it, it doesnt do any harm. If you preferred, you could use some PVA stuff os nip round to a DIY Store and ask them.

I thought putting some sealer round the top the the skirts would be a good idea then water shouldnt get behind them and just run off the top instead

Just been to buy the clips from Vaux! Once I've drilled the holes, I'll probably give them a lick of Hammerite, sticking the brush through the hole to try and get a nice slop of it on the inside.

To be honest, I'm more worried about lining it all up before drilling. Looks like I'm off to the DIY store to get some double sided tape. Lots of it....

Post up loads of pics of the sideskirts being fitted so I have and idea when I come to put mine on :)

When i do my skirts will i get away with using self tapping screws instead of riveting in? ta

Jcb

I should think you'll make more of a mess of the body work using self tappers. They may pull the metal making a convex(?) dent. (As opposed to a concave one?)

If you drill and rivet, it will be neater, despite the fact you won't be able to see the screws once the skirt is on. I would also guess that rivets would make a stronger and more flush join, because when you use self tappers, there is the flash which the thread cuts out of the hole.

Ultimately up to you though mate. I think I'm going for rivets.

Matt2107

Dont forget to use a centre punch on each rivet hole before you start drilling.

fix

Whats a centre punch?

Matt2107
14-04-08, 05:06 PM
Piece of pointed metal that you tap with a hammer to make a small dent.
Centralises the drill bit and stops it skipping across the metal.

Philips screwdriver will work as well.

Lol i get you,to stop getting drill mark on the paint when it slips!
