i worked out the other day that if we traded in US dollers, we'd be paying just over $8 per gallon (thats at ?1.07 per litre)

the yanks are moaning as their "gasoline~" is so pricey, i just checked and there is nowhere in the US that charges more than $3.50 per gallon, which means they are paying ?0.47 for a litre of juice...

and they think they got price issues:wtf:

The price of gasoline in the US has risen at a similar rate to the price in the UK though, its always been much cheaper over there due to the national reserve and special deals with Canada.

The US is getting quite twitchy of late as the new Iranian Oil Bourse has just began trading - in Euros. Up to now, the lions share of oil trading was done in US$ which has always given it an economic foothold as any country buying oil needed to buy US$ to do so. Without that requirement, the price of the dollar could drop off - you'll note Euros have gained value recently (from ~68p in sept 07, to almost 80p today), whilst the dollar took a tumble again early this year.

Average price per gallon of gasoline at the pumps currently ranges from 320.6 (Gulf Coast) to 360.8 (California, unsurprisingly)

This will make you annoyed though - of that $3.60 per gallon, only 13% is tax. Over here, we pay approximately 70% tax/duty on fuel....

I've just calculated it, on a pump price of 107.9 you're looking at:

16p VAT
50.35p Duty
41.45p Fuel cost (profit, markup, delivery, refining, drilling)

That works out about 61% tax. Still, thats almost 5x the tax Americans pay...

not much of a concilation but us fuel has a lower octane than brittish fuel... but still doesn't justify the tax charged!

the thing about america is... everything is further apart, so yanks actually spend as much as us over a year......

Only very slightly, the main difference is due to UK pumps advertising the RON whilst US pumps advertise AKI or RdON which is the average between the RON and MON - IMO a more honest way of advertising fuel.
