After many requests I've put a WIP post in here lol

This is my newly bought 2.0 16v (semi) track ready Nova SRi. I originally bought it for the parts but will now put my other shell on hold and get this ready for PV using some of my parts intended for my other shell. After that the engine will be used in my other shell and I might source an SRi engine to put back into this.

Plans:
Re-paint inside and cage
Re-paint engine bay
2 new MK2 wings
MK2 grille and lights
2 doors
Sort out wiring, switches and clocks
2 new seats (from my other one)
GSi bumpers
Big brakesThat should make it respectable enough for PV and I'll finish my other shell for next year :)

Some of the parts used will come from my boxes of stocks that are ready for my other shell and will eventually be transferred over.

Heres some pics as it is at the moment (after a wash)

Small update.

NO work done on the Nova but have managed to get my new shed up.

A few weeks ago I purchased a 3m x 4m metal shed, while I was awaiting delivery I got some concrete down on a big area of our garden.

The shed arrived and I started to put it together to find that some bits were missing grrr

While I was waiting for the missing parts to arrive I changed my plan which meant I needed more concrete lol
Concrete costs loads, upto now on this project I've spent roughly £585 on the concrete alone!

After the first delivery of concrete the garden looked like this:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAGE_083.jpg

The prefab shed was going at the end of the concrete, behind it was going to be a BBQ area.

My plan changed (and costs laods more) and we pulled down that temporary shed you can see in the corner to make way for more concrete.

Now you see shed (last Sunday):
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0142.jpg

Now you don't lol (Theres Samantha getting rid of some stuck on expanding foam)
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0143.jpg

Then I made some more shuttering to pour the concrete into (last Wednesday) (crap pic due to phone cam in the dark):
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0146.jpg

Then came some concrete (last Friday):
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0147.jpg

Once that had set we started building the shed again and got absolutely soaked when it started pouring down! Quiting was not an option as the shed couldn't be left at the stage we had reached! (Saturday & Sunday)
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0155.jpg

All finished :)
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/garden/IMAG0157.jpg

I now have somewhere to keep my stuff and can finally get on with the car (s).
Before next winter I'm going to build a big workshop on the concrete in front of the shed so that I can work on the car inside there no matter what the weather.

Next updates will be about the car!

Done quite a few bits on the car since getting the shed sorted. First proper day on the car was Sunday, it's gonna be flat out now to get it sorted for PV!

First I took the seats out, I figured that I need to remove the frame that's been put in for the base-mounted Monaco bucket seats. The Cobra Evolution's are side mount and use their own frames, there was no way they would fit with the frame there so it was gonna have to go!

Just after the seats came out:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnapYs0rkT_iRt3vKEXp-ayY.jpg

I also removed all the clocks and switches that were zip-tied to various things.

How many zip-ties!:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnYLKTvDdLm5jDqf7NnoKNYA.jpg

Some of you will probably cringe now! I also decided to remove the bar that ran across where the dash would normally be. I want to run a custom dash and this was in the way. I just didn't like it.

Muhahahahhahahahha:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZbF_MQ48Ypy8Ef5ZH8p_Mb.jpg

After quite a lot of grinding and hack-sawing I finally had enough room for my seats and a dash! I still need to tidy up the bits where the stuff I cut away was welded:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZb9sBBYSZ1XGQDqUxACma7.jpg

While I was doing all that Sam was busy DAing the boot. It's previously been brush painted and was quite rough to look at. After some sanding it's much better. It's got some primer on it now and will look much better when we paint the inside. The rest of the inside and the cage still need doing!:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnYSJ3dAtLmTu0ft0YgmkXiM.jpg

Today the 2 new mk2 wings arrived:

Tonight I stripped the front off the car, I wasn't in the mood for grinding and welding so this was a nice easy job:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnaEbrFdwu8yqFeOj1wgKw0H.jpg

The car has been on a farm for the past year or so, the wet mud and lack of cleaning has been taking it's toll!:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZWA0sEWbOgooNluy39zT8L.jpg

After cleaning one side I decided to do a before and after on the other. Before I cleaned the mud out:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnY63J_qylWoD3UA1-aC0sQW.jpg

And after. To be honest it's not that bad considering it's been caked in wet mud all winter:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZbRJe7g2j_uqJyH3b4-5HF.jpg

Last pic, just before I packed up for the night. I offered up the front end to see how it fits. The pattern wings aren't too bad but will need a little bit of fettling to make them fit properly.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnbmROzIAfORdkKatxLhSqDU.jpg

Still can't find any doors so decided to have a go at repairing the current ones.

Quick update:

Been doing all sorts, engine's coming out one night this week, I've de-greased as much of it as I can - instant improvement! The gearbox is back to alloy again!

Most of the redundant seat brackets and stuff are nearly gone now. I need to get this finished asap and then weld in the brackets for the bucket seats.

Sam's been sanding everything that needs sanding and it's starting to look much better even though theres primer everywhere!

Brackets removed:

Got the engine out tonight so I can now prep the engine bay ready for when I paint it.

I have all the paint in stock and received the Bailey header tank today.

It was still quite a bit of effort though and still more to do. It seems like some parts of the bay have previously been painted without being prepped properly and the de-greaser was actually taking the paint off! Should have that bit done tonight.

Small update. Had plans to get loads done today but we went out lastnight and I felt very rough this morning so there is no motivation whatsoever, I have hoovered loads of dust out of the shell though lol

The temporary spray booth is now up :)
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnYk2Zf3HFwPrCeX4okgp0Xh.jpg

Got the engine bay prepped and primed, big thanks to Nick (novaload_nick) for prepping the bay while I got on with other bits inside the car:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5Onbv6HTUOivsM7HMKykTqAy9.jpg

I haven't used the compressor and spray gun for something like 8 years and it all worked as good as I left it!

Theres a few more jobs to do inside then it can be primed inside, I'll sort out the few rust spots on the arches at the same time.
I'm dreading painting inside, it's gonna be very difficult with the cage in there!

Adam

Cool.
Where did you get your "spray booth" from?

kevw
18-05-08, 04:06 PM
We've had it for years and put it up for parties etc.

Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6501479/Trail/searchtext%3EGAZEBO.htm

Very handy for this as it just about fits onto the concrete bit in front of the shed and allowed us to work on the car while it was raining yesterday. It has plastic base plates on the end of each of the legs with holes in so you can peg it down. I've screwed it to the concrete :)

I'm getting somewhere now! Prepping has taken agggeeees, we kept finding suprises that weren't expected or allowed for, it's not going to be perfect but at the end of the day it is a track car.

The gazebo is taking a hammering in the windy weather we've been having and has had to have ad-hoc repairs as we've been going along, it now has rope all over the place and extra framing made from wood lol

I masked the car up today so I can paint the inside, went over to my paint mixing area and got some anthracite mixed, poured it into my new gravity fed gun that I've never used (and was sooo looking forward to using!) went to plug it into the air line and it was a different connector doh!
OK I should have checked this first but I've had this new gun for about 4 years and it slipped my mind. I had to pour the paint into my old gun which was recently named (and demoted to) "the primer gun" lol and use that instead.

I've got loads of pics but can't get them off my phone very easily so I've got 2 from today:

The car all masked up and waiting for paint inside:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZkCvjp3s1U9WxW4YBnbDd-.jpg

The inside after painting the anthracite on:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/track_nova/y1pIef5Sfw5OnZTXsCyWtWSN8hRWaQQWLIF.jpg

It still needs lacquer but looks soooooo much better. I will hopefully be able to lacquer tomorrow and can then reverse the masking (so the holes are masked up instead of open) and paint the outside!

Then start putting it all back together!

2 weeks to go!

It's from the local body shop supplier, it comes on a roll. I've had it in stock for years so can't remember how much it was, something like £12 rings a bell! The masking tape was just a bulk pack from the same place.

You can get polythene sheeting for doing large areas which is handy if your doing something like a wing and need to cover everything else up! It took quite a while to mask the car up how it is in them pics.

I'm off to do some lacquering!

Hopefully if the weathers OK tomorrow after work I'll be able to go straight in, wipe it all off with a tack cloth and get some paint on w00t!

i hate bodywork with a passion so my cap is doffed to you sir

When I left school (1996) I trained for 2 years in Motor Vehicle Body Repair because at the time I wanted to be a paint sprayer and was advised that this was the route in. Enjoyed that time but decided that I didn't want to persue it as a career so took the IT route and I'm now an IT Manager lol

After doing this project it has reminded me of the hard work involved in body repair and painting, I've enjoyed it but have been spending every spare hour for the last 3 or so weeks working on the car. I'm knackered and feel like I've hardly seen Sam even though we share a bed lol

Been mega busy tonight!

I was delayed with painting because of the crazy rain we had, the gazebo leaked and we had to do more mods to it!

We had a roll of damp course lying around so yesterday Sam and I put it over the top of the gazebo frame (but inside the gazebo cover) to prevent any water leaks.

Today the weather was ok and quite warm so when I got in from work I went straight out and did a few last minute prep tasks and got the paint gun out!
I did have some probs but I'm fairly happy with the result, the breather hole on the gun must be blocked as it was building up a vacuum in the paint can and not spraying very "wet". When I realised what was going on I kept releasing it to let air in and managed to progress, put it this way, once you've started painting theres no backing out!

6pm tonight:

It's two-pack paint. The only prob painting in them conditions is the chance of getting crap in the paint. There are a few bits but they'll buff out.

Well, managed to get the car to PV! We were still working on it until about 1pm on Saturday. The first drive was the drive to PV, a bit risky but had to be done.

It turned out to be OK and the car ran great. Theres a few bugs that need ironing out which I can now work on without any extreme deadlines!

We were about 8 miles from home and I realised we forgot the carbon fibre panels which I was going to fit once we got there... gutted.

Heres a couple of pics from the car on the stand (not sure where I got these but they're someone elses from another thread lol):

I'm just planning what to do with mine, I was originally going to use some Nova GTE clocks with the hood off the mk2 dash built into a custom dash with a switch panel to the side.

Not sure not though as I've seen loads of things in the Tweeks catalouge that I want lol so back to the drawing board.

Will be making some kind of pod/panel with a switch panel though...

Spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out what to do with the dash in the car. I worked out what guages I would want and it came to over £600 in total! That included everything to keep it road (MOT) legal. I like guages but started looking at digi dashes as they are available in the same price range.

Popped to Demon Tweeks yesterday to have a look at some of the stuff in the flesh (it's dangerous on the wallet living so close to that place!) and came away with a bag load of switches and one of these:

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/IMAG0361.jpg

I powered it up lastnight on a 12v supply:
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/kev-w/IMAG0362.jpg

It's a Race Technolgy - Dash2 (http://www.race-technology.com/dash2_2_31.html), I opted for this as it'll be road legal in an all in one unit and is fully expandable and customisable, also not forgetting I love gadgets and can hook this up to my laptop lol. I also have the option to hook it up to a data logger in the future for track usage :)

kevw
28-08-08, 07:14 PM
Since last update progress has been minimal, I've just been driving the car and enjoying it lol

The dash isn't in yet but I think I have everything to do it now.

I've fitted some new exhaust mount rubbers as the ones that were on were mega bodged with exhaust clamps and stuff and the exhaust was resting on the rear beam. I ripped them off and put some new ones on (cost about £4 lol) - I'll dig out the pics I took..

I've fitted the carbon fibre panels on the inside so it looks pretty good now.

The car is coming off the road after Trax and will be having at least the following thoughout the winter:
2 x rear 1/4 panels
Front end sorting out - I've got a new top panel in stock so might use that. I'm not keen on the chopped top panel and it's not been welded on straight so the headlights and grille won't line up properly :(
If I can source some mint doors with handles I'll use them instead of the de-handled doors
Full paint on the outside
Fit the dash
Coilovers
Throttle bodies if funds allow :DIt's gonna keep me busy!
