heres one of my old valver, the front crossmember wasnt welded up and it ripped itself apart! but tbh it had started to rot from the inside out so it was bound to happen, this lasted about two months after the conversion was done

^^^ that looks like it would have happened with even a 1.0 engine in there....
you dont have to weld the bay up, but while the engine is out it makes sense to weld it up.

that was the only area that wasnt touched, the rest of the bay was stitch welded, i didnt realise at the time that area required welding:wall: anyway i was doing around 60-70mph when it went down a country road, all i heard was a bang and then the car decided it would rather face a field than the road:eek:. to say my **** went tighter than a ducks is an understatmentlol .
oh well you live and learn

ive never had a problem with my saloon it had a valver in it with 48 webers and a few other tweeks regularly went drag racing with it and never had a prob checked the shell over when i removed the valver last summer and it was all still fine, would say it depends how solid your shell is when i did mine it had only done 36k and was mint so has a better chance of survival i guess

a friend of mine managed to completely rip the front crossmember free from one side when he put his foot down out of a mini roundabout, that wasnt even with a 2.0 but with a 1.6xe on 40's,both wheels decided they would decide to pretend to be like shopping trolley wheels and went all skew wiff lol no pics though
I did have one that pulled it self apart, went on the seams around the turrets.
My current runabout hasn't been welded up and isn't the best shell by far but has been ok so far even with drag racing etc.
My last valver runabout wasn't welded either and was still ok when I sold it.

Not the golden rule but I think if the driver is intent on generally spinning the wheels & abusing the helll out of the inside wheel whilst exiting every bend, you will suffer the panels opening up, however driven properly & adult-like, I'm sure a rust free shell would last OK.
However on having my 1.6 turbo plated & seam welded, the difference to the steering, chassis rigidity & handling was fantastic. You are daft not to IMO.
