View Full Version : After a New Old Car.........
As I've landed a spanky new job I now need a car to get to work and back.
I'm looking at spending a MAXIMUM of 400 notes on the new chariot. I'm going to be doing at least 125 miles a week and the driving will be fairly stop start as I'll be in the commuter slog, but also be used by me and her for going out for the day etc etc.
I'd like a Vaux but beggars can't be choosers.
Any suggestions??
well.. your on a nova forum, and you want a vauxhall.. so id get a diesel peugeot 106...
Post removed cause I'm a tit

I know, if you could it would be a right rust bucket, but i agree, pug diesel is the best option!

i had a 106 diesel van for work never let me down once, and costs next to nothing to run id say it must of been doing 55-60mpg if not a bit more.
I bought a mint carlton Diplomat a few years back for 360 quid and insured it for 120. She had all the electric goodies you can think of, full leather, and an autobox which made sitting in traffic a lot more bearable.
cavalier turbo deisel mate
Or generally any Cavalier - perfect for a daily run around and plenty space for carrying and or towing.

doh double post!
How long is your commute? I'm guessing that 120miles a week will roughly work out to 20 miles a day (guessing on a 6day week lol), so 10 miles each way.....
No way in hell would I buy a diesel to do such low mileage. I can almost garuntee that you will use as much fuel (if not more) as a petrol, and with the price difference being rather high I'd recomend a petrol.
put it this way... my old 1.2 nova mustered 15mpg when I was doing a 4 mile trip each way to work, got the same mpg in my 3.0 V6 omega on the same journey ffs lol.

5 day week thankyou :p early finish on a Friday!
Most of it will probably be start stop, start try and beat the next set of lights stop type driving, even if I go through the lanes it gets quite busy so around 30-40mph.
I take your point Stu as I'll be on a dual carriage way for all of a mile and a half before I come off (and that will probably be very slow too)
Diesel a no no then?
imho a diesel for such a drive would be a no no, but im sure others would disagree.
maybe a modern diesel would be fine for the job, but a ?400 derv wont. I'd get a decent nick petrol powered beast, something resonably over engined that isnt turbod to give you better acceleration economy and all that jazz.
What about an auto...? Cerainly be easier for stop start traffic.
auto = -10mpg immediately lol and ime it was no easier in stop start as you should take it out of drive when you are stationary as holding it on the brake can cook the torque convertor etc....

I actually do that when I drive autos, will have one when I'm old but until then...........
