View Full Version : Benn's on going build
Well thought its about time i go a thread going on here too...
The full thread is on Mig, so please pop over and have a look from the start..
http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/projects-restorations/314761-my-novas-rebirth.html
Where do i start?
Well with the new bits i guess...New wheels...
So a few weeks ago i picked up my new wheels. Got the old tyres taken off as there where huge, then took them to this man.. (Craig and Mark at Hi-pol metal polishers 01329289966)
I wanted to do a test rim to see what finish i wanted on them..
Sanded.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image022.jpg~original
polishing starts (this was a quick 10 job to see the finish was like)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image023.jpg~original
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image025.jpg~original
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image028.jpg~original
Now cause the rims come painted the casting isnt 100% on them getting a good polished finish can be hard and takes time.
There not fully 100% but i think there damn good. they do need a good clean.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/Image030.jpg~original
Now after leaving the wheel with him and letting him work his magic, i picked it up.. (again still needing a clean off)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim4.jpg~original
Now to do a trial fit...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim3.jpg~original
Tryed to get it tucked up like it will be when fitted..
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim11.jpg~original
But my dad couldnt so....
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim17.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim15.jpg
Will be lower as you can guess.
Now as the tear drop bits on the wheel are so small there a night mare to get in to, as is the lip on the out edge there gonna need to be painted,
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/turborim18.jpg
They're getting finished at the mo...
Lathing it....
With my 5stud hubs here it was time i wisk them up to petes for a day of lathing* down.
Starting off with all this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing001.jpg
First thing to do was press the old hubs out...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing009.jpg
While this was done... Pete set the lathe up..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing003.jpg
Hubs in the lathe and ready to go..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing014.jpg
Gentlemen start your lathing...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing016.jpg
Lathing down...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing018.jpg
This is where you can see some one took the hubs out of the leg with a chissel...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing019.jpg
Lathing tool...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing031.jpg
While the lathe was rolling Dan and my self finished off pressing the bearings out..
Me getting the surclip out...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/12-1-20085StudLathing035.jpg

You know I love this car Benn! You go the rest of the wheels back yet??
Adding these to finish off the holes.. They'll be painted bright silver...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3566.jpg[/quote]
I popped to london to meet Dec,
The man is a legend. He show me and dan around his gym/nova store... All the mint bits for his mk1 look great and it will make one hell of a nova!
Went up there to pick up a nice pair of mint doors, and they are, bit grabbie and who ever painted them hasnt done a good job, but none of that matters ass i'll bare metal them, delock and then fully paint them up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/janupdatesdoors2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/janupdatesdoors.jpg
Main bit, nonrusty corners just a bit grubby, (mine have started to bubble after the window trim was leaking water in,)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/janupdatesdoors3.jpg
as said on MIG.. its a great car mate keep it up..
This came a few days ago from rick (RJM25R) legend, More pics later... (its chromed)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3405.jpg
Then this came to day..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3414.jpg
So i could do this...
MMwwhahahahaha
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image009.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image015.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image020.jpg
Buzed off my bumper...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff4.jpg
All taped in place to get the fit right...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff7.jpg
Making sure it all lines up right..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff2.jpg
My plastic welding.. not hugely neat but it works..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff5.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff6.jpg
All welded in, took about two hours with trimming bits of the cut away bumper to sit neatly and so on..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff3.jpg
All finished, be for a light skim of fiber glass tomoz.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febbumperstuff.jpg
Added the towing eye bit in on sat when i poped in,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper39.jpg
Cause of the gap for the towing eye i needed to add some plastic on the bottom, used for of the other rear bumper as its thinner and easyer to melt/cut and shape. Getting better at plastic welding now...lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper33.jpg
With that welded in and the bottom edge shaped i sanded it back ready for some black fiber glass,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper38.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper35.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper32.jpg
Right picked these up...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Febupdatesbumper34.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3610.jpg
Found some gsi cards with holes in.. But didnt like the holes so.. I didnt cut these..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3611.jpg
So found some hole less gsi cards.. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3613.jpg
So inkeeping with the hidden away look i thought about bolding the speaker in here..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3612.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3614.jpg
Then trimming the wood of the door card so the sound can come through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3615.jpg
Sound comes thru fine which is good. :)
And i picked these up...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3258.jpg
Bit dirty tho.. need cleaning up...
So while jamie changed his clutch i did this to them...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image050.jpg
Which gave me this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image044.jpg
Then this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/Image039.jpg
Swaped my lights over again today...lol for the new totaly clear lights..
Old tinted ones..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3602.jpg
and the custom lighting patton...Main lights...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3603.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3604.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3606.jpg
New cleans got a clean... then bolted in. The dark bits are cause there are no bulb holders in them at the mo.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3607.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_3609.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/marchcarupdates.jpg
Put my rear brakes back together.. and finish painting the calipars.. just need the bolts from my hubs now..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/marchcarupdates3.jpg

Speedlines are to boring. Everyone has them, Just dont like them like i used too. Turbo rims should look great.. i hope.

windscrew looks slightly slightly tinted too to me, looks quite cool but definitely not a good practical idea lol
Update.
Right first off a big big thanks to Astra Dan and More cavs than you Pete. Mig funking legends!
Took the two rears down and sorted the tyres before work this morning again. Thank you Paul and Daz at Protyre in fareham 01329 220743.
So i finished at 1pm, tank it home on me bike, to find dan and pete already at mine working away..
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3988.jpg
They had finished stripping the front off and where sorting the cv joints and shafts out. Finding some of the spilens on my "custom" shafts where a bit butched.. i made a quick to to a mate and stole his Gsi shaft with cav mk2 inner.. as a temp fix and picked up some lunch.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3987.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3994.jpg
Got back and got the shaft sorted out and ready to fit.
While they where carring on with the front,
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3990.jpg
I started stripping the rear end.
Now i bought the beam all ready converted to disc... So i had no clue what had been done.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3996.jpg
First starting to undo the hub bolts... Funking hell these where tight! One of them they had just started to round when they stoped.. so tryed to undo it it rounded right away.. Striped off the calipars, springs and shocks off, and un did the hand brake cable.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3999.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3997.jpg
After a lot! of fighting i got the hubs unbolted and off, Then pulled out the grinder out and ground the head off the rounded bolt.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_3995.jpg
Now while i was ion there, dan remember what the simps (cheers dude) had to did, trimming down the casing off the beam so cause the shoulders on the bolt touch it so you cant do them up... Sooo
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4002.jpg
The new hubs had abs, these is a prob as the old hubs and beam didnt.. so the hole in the center wasnt bigger enough So we removed (see hit with a hammer) the abs cover thing and rings under neither, they fit a bit better now.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4001.jpg
While that all sorted it was bolting back together time. Fitting my old fk rear springs as they are lower.. Just till the coilovers get here.
Heres how she looks at the mo. No prober pics as one of the cvs on the front isnt fully clicked in to place so i have no drive, so will get it jacked up and sorted in the morning, give it a good clean then get some proper pics, but you get the look.

well i had my doubts but they were wrong! That looks superb man, look forward to seeing proper pictures.
Funking thing!
Been under and in it all day!
Right nova gsi shafts, are 22spilne on the inner end, and 28 on the out... So the cvs i have for the outer are wrong. Funking cont bags.
So i need a pair of cvs, then are 28 inner spline and 33 hub end... funk!
But i can now get a shalf out in under 4min.... Which is great.
Pics uploading so i'll be editing this in a few.
First strip down.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4012.jpg
Throught it was fixed to put it all back together... It wasnt
Second strip down...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4013.jpg
Swaped to my other gsi shafts (ones i painted a few pages ago)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4017.jpg
Everything seamed to fit and work ok, built it all up
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4018.jpg
Fitted it and same thing!:mad:
So i now need to sit and look thru the cv joint book and find the right ones, that are 28 slipnes on the shaft and 33 for the hub... hoping i can do it and find them to moz.. or i'm funked.
So pissed off with that i thought i'd swap the rear arb...
Old ones the pink one.. new is the silver..

Dont know what the old ones from but its tiny..
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4025.jpg
Beat the old one out.. cleaned it up and fitted the new one.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4021.jpg
So wheels back on and they needed a good clean, so wanted to try my megs metal polish
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Turbo%20rims/IMG_4027.jpg
Not impressed! Came out ok in places but bits have gone misty...(polish is still on the wheels in the pics)
So gonna have to clean them up with something else then wax them.
Ride hight has settled a bit.. Should and will be lower.

Try using some autosol on them man, then put wheel wax on them (thats actually what its called) Il try and find you a link for it.
edit: heres the stuff i use at work man, its **** hot. Would really protect the wheels. Not sure where you could get it from, we just get it in every so often when we run out. Try some of these detailing websites, if you cant get it and fancy some il send some to you. Or bring it to pvs.

Prob is autosol has a cut, with can mark the finish.. looking at the link now.
Wheelwax doesnt really workthat much on polished alloy...
Its more of just a strong wax.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Coilovers/IMG_4039.jpg
Update.
What a utter pain the in the ass doing this 5stud has been.
So after the pissing about with the ment to be nova shafts that turned out to be tigra shafts... But the simps managed to sort his funk up (cheers dude) and found shawn had a pair of big block nova sized shaft.. So after a lil road trip(300milesish to essex and back) i had a pair of shafts..
Got them all fitted this morning.. sorted the leek in the gear box.. my falt didnt push the shaft in fully.. Started it and woohhooo i had drive. Took the car on a test drive and had a really bad banging from the rear, WTF! Thought maybe it where the seats not seated right.. but they where ok... pissed about changing them, nope..
Went to check the calipar bolts where right and found the whole hub was moving
So with a bit of diagnosees we worked out that the abs ring bit was hitting the beam mount, so the bolts where tight.. but the hub was tight to the mount so it could move
So anyone that is either fitting these kinda stuff, or will be check this out.
Pete worked out that we could put washers on the studs so it with kinda space the hub so when it was bolted up it would be tight. So both hubs off, thick stanless washers fitted, bolted back up and it worked and was tight.. Test drove it.. and she was beautifull.
Washed it and swaped back to my tinted lights too.
So i wanna say a huge thanks to dan and pete both of you legends. A thank you to simps and shawn.
Now the bit you wanna see if you havent all ready..

skirts look bloody awesome on that car, really continues the colour theme front to back
also makes the car appear much lower, without actually being lower :thumb:
nice chap!
Cheers olly. Better get painting..
I agree, the skirts finish the car perfectly! Doooo it!
Thank you very much nick, i did yours too, tis very nice.

Do you mean you you were looking round mine at pv??? As it wasnt actually there! :) However there was one that looks very similar being valetmans old motor? Yes will be at billing fella cant wait tbh! Im actually against the skirts I prefer the car without them! But I do agree it gives it a lower look etc which certainly isnt a bad thing!

Yeah, he means Conads(valetmans old one) which now has black bumpers so looks very similar to yours.

See what ad says about the car wise...
Skirts wise.. i was never fussed, but someone on mig did a photoshop with them and i liked them, but gonna skirt them on so hopefully they should come off if needed..
Been a while so..
After reading a thread on Astramk2.com we've found a breath that gets block and can affect the idel and can make it oil at high rpm as its the oil pressure oil breather..
This one..

On my xe engines ive always drilled that bit out to open it up. If you look its narrower inside than the rest of the tube. it will only get blocked up easily again otherwise. Just make sure you drill it straight and will be fine
loooooking gooo Mr benn, I might go for a Black headlining at some point. Are they a bugger to do???
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Show%20prep/IMG_4256.jpg

The inside of it is smaller than the pipes on either side, if you drill it out wrong it will mess up the idel and then your screwed.
loooooking gooo Mr benn, I might go for a Black headlining at some point. Are they a bugger to do???
Cheers dude,
I hate headlinings, my last one was a standrd one and it was a nightmare to fit, i got stressed to much i was bitting the trim to get the rage out..lol
Thos one fits really well, need a clip that gos in the sun roof casset tho as the bars abit low, it came with extra to cut off when fitted which was really handy, but the center bit where the hole is wasnt big enough so thats why i gotta work out what to do with that bit.
Ive never had a problem with it, just make sure you drill down straight and there wont be any problems.
Just thought id mention it while you have it out
You really shouldnt drill it anless the drill is the same size as the most inner hole, this is what Darronh of Astramk2 did and it screwed the idel speed up as its a main breather.
Mines clear now with just a bit of carb cleaner and a screw driver..
When its clear you can see the hole on the inside if a different size.

At the weekend i striped my coilovers off and greased all the threads up and adjusters and lowered it a touch more...
While i was there i thought i could change the pipe work for my filler. I dared to undo the jublee clip and it started to get wet so i stoped and did it up thinking lost of fuel in, i'll wait till its empty.
Drove to work on wed and found my car seamed to be a bit scared of something and have wet her self...

That was after moving it about 10foot.
So got it in the garage and riped it apart.. Finding the hose that was all i could find just wasnt making a good seal (knew it wasnt leaked if i put to much fuel in)

So messed about and now have a new bit of hose in, and metal bit to that long and better shaped, gave everything a repaint to as i was in there..
