Excessive compression

A mate who bought my blown GTE engine to try and fix it, has come to the conclusion that it was blowing pistons because of the head beeing too low. Is there a way of fixing this (I?ve been told about using 2 head gaskets or skimming the top of the pistons - is this safe?) other than a new head?
Alternatively, can a 1.3 or 1.4 head be used or can the injection system be put on a 1.3 or 1.4 engine?

I hope its not true about the head. Ive got a 1.2 and ive had the head skimmed, any idea if this will have the same results?

I suppose there must be a limit for how much you can skimm...
