I loved the idea of banded/widened steel wheels so thought i would have a go at creating some my self in my 'spare' time at work....what do we think??

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/130320081212.jpg

And there were two

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/130320081215.jpg

This is how they were made....

Started off with this old thing only 5 inch wide!

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081157.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081156.jpg

Then i cut the front lip off it on the lathe

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081160.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081161.jpg

Found a donor 5 and a half inch rim and cut the front lip of that

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081163.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/100320081165.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081168.jpg

Count Vaux Alot

Then cut the centre out of the donor wheel

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081169.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081171.jpg

This left me with the rear lip of both wheels one with the centre left the nova one and the donor with out the centre

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081174.jpg

Then i simply combined the two rear sections of wheel as so:

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081176.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081177.jpg

The result a 7.5 inch wide wheel! YES!

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081180.jpg

And a nice deep dish

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081185.jpg

I had it sand blasted then cleaned it all up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081187.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/110320081190.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/120320081197.jpg

Then attempted to weld it up which didn't go according to plan....

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/120320081204.jpg

I believe this to be some thing to do with the sand blasting process as they said the sand blasting could have inpregnated the metal with resin this made it spatter like mad and was a complete **** to weld hence i haven't had the second one sand blasted yet and will get it done now its welded up!

See no.2 and a much neater weld!

Looking good how long they take?

The first took a while with measurments etc but the second to its current state took about an hour! There is still the sand blasting, powder coating (in silver) then painting the centres of the wheel in dark grey as the origional

Oh yes probably for shows but they will get used and i'm on the look out for a mk1 hatch so they may find them selfs onto that as i like my saloon wheels alot already!

I have considered taking orders but i need to complete my set of 4 and get them all rubbered up to work out how much a set would actually cost with and with out tires.

Hi,
I not 100% sure but I think this is illegal now? Maybe best check it out before selling any. They look well though.

good skills but the new lip looks wrong.... You need to mate a front to a back as the lip profiles are different for tyre fitting purposes.

Whats the crack with getting tyres for them? I'd have thought you'd need a MINIMUM of 225's or wider? Have you got a supplier?

Jay
14-03-08, 11:58 AM
195/45-14's would do...

Dod

195/45-14's would do...

 Thats what I have on my 5.5" Steels. They'd be way too narrow, would look stupid and ware unevenly like a *******.

Jay
14-03-08, 12:25 PM
Well they'd proberly rub with anything wider... ?

Dod
14-03-08, 01:09 PM
Well since the wheels have be widened they'll sit out too far anyway. I reckon this mod is best kept to Saloons or 5 doors with the Rounded arches.

That said, I'm running 215s on my 6x15" Comps with no rubbage so it may be a case of trial and error although the offset/inset is going to be all messed up.

fancy making me some 7" ones ? lol

14-03-08, 04:02 PM
7,5" is 7,5j right?

a 185-50-14 goes easely on that.

good skills but the new lip looks wrong.... You need to mate a front to a back as the lip profiles are different for tyre fitting purposes.

If i mate a front to a back then it defeats the point as you might as well band instead, and the reason for joining is to achieve the width :tard: as for the lip profile i already know this i asked my tire fitter prior to welding the first and he said no probs :thumb:

Count Vaux Alot
14-03-08, 06:43 PM
the offset/inset is going to be all messed up.[/quote]

I can alter this if its wrong buy cutting the centre out and moving it to suit but they are for show and i have a saloon so its no real problem.

Stuart

fair enough, aslong as you dont have problems when it comes time to fit the tyres and them not going over the lip.I'm quite willing to have my theory proved wrong :D

i believe that you need to be a coded welder, because it is a pressurised vessel, but considering how alloys get 'reconned' with filler I think you will be ok, how are they for balance?

trackdaynova
15-03-08, 08:53 AM
they rock - well done mate... as for stretch tyres, I fitted these 225/35/19s to my friends 11 J wide rims, not for the euro look obviously, but just becase they look ace
