been on going with this since the end of 2005 after the last spider was stolen (nothing ever found) but its getting very close now to being finished so thought i'd stick a WIP thread up to help motivate me a bit more. Think i've done more work in the last 3 weeks than I have in 2-3 years.
Decided not to put a WIP thread up after the last car being stolen, always wondered if it was possibly (but unlikely) stolen to order.
Anyway.....
Not sure many of you will of done this but I bought the car purely by these pics. I bought the car from the isle of man (hence the plate, that has to go). The owner drove it to the port for me at Douglas? and the ferry company drove it on. It then sat in liverpool (and wasnt nicked???!!) until a local transport company brought it home on a 11 car artic, it was the only car on it at the time. It then came back to me with my cousins work, below are pics..

The car was used by Irmscher Uk for the 1985 (I think may be 86) motorshow at the NEC. I have been luckily enough to talk to Tom May( R.I.P) before he retired who sent me some original press pics and also some non publshed pics.
Steve Thompson cars (Irmscher's only uk importer in the 80's and early 90s) needed 2 cars for the NEC motorshow. They couldnt get 2 basic spec cars in time to get them converted so 2 1.3 SR Novas in white got delivered to the dealership. Tom and another driver drove them to Germany to Irmscher to get them converted. Tom remembered driving this home as it was the only one of the 2 to have the seats re-trimmed. A rare conversion in Germany let alone in the UK.
heres a pic of it when I first seen it and how it was back in the 80's

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/wip%2024dec2006/104_7112.jpg
The paint was rough and the shell hadn't been dewaxed properly and some old wayoyl hadn't been cleaned off.
It went back to the Bodyshop in March and only arrived back on 19th June 2007
I also started to strip the engine, heres some pics, where to start with it!! Its rotten, and needs a good wire brush and lick of paint.

Engine has the Irmscher injection, and is a 1300, I plan on adding a little bit more power but still a small block engine. Ive also got the Irmscher cam cover for it freshly powder coated.
I'm also where possible using stainless nuts and bolts on it, just so they dont rust, last spider hadnt been on the road for long and the nuts and bolts had rusted and looked shocking

These pics are from August 2007 and the car wasnt touched since then due to it being at my parents hose and us having a new addition to the family time was slim so I never bothered, since then I have just bought a house hence the recent influx of work on the car. I now have to only got 2 seconds out the back of the house instead of half an hour up the road.
wow looking really good, cant wait to see the final product!
Looking sweet.

It's great what your doing even if it costs alot of money it will be worth it in the end.
Can't wait to see the end product. Not seen a spider wip before so this is a good time to learn somethings about them.
Keep it up.!

Been working on the engine recently, cleaned the block up with a lovely wire heel on an angle grinder, this then resulted in me getting sh1t in my eye and couldnt drive for a few days, will remember to follow basic health and safety from now on!!
The engine was very health when I bought it so didnt see the point in stripping it fully, decided instead to just replace the oil pump and gaskets on it, mainly for cosmetics.
Engine pics from early in the thread

Decided tonight to get the engine a step closer, had a faff on getting head bolts sorted but couldnt get proper original hex heads with out getting them shipped from Germany, to much hassle for such a little feature, even Vauxhall have stopped doing the old style so I settled for genuine Torx heads bolts. Few bits are fitted loosely to see how it looks, others are there to stay, will be changing a few nuts and bolts in time for stainless ones and a bit more cleaning with good old scotch cloth.
Inlet manifold I had left in acid with the local cylinder head guy to try and clean it up, its better but not perfect, he also did the throttle body aswell

Whilst thats all going on, As ive said before (I think) I have never been happy with the under side of the car, flacky bits like so
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010413.jpg
The sealer and paint had started to flake off not good when the car hadnt even been on the road.
So again thank you to Royston I got a lend of his body roller, so onwards and upwards
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010434.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010417.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010410.jpg
There was also areas that the bodyshop hadnt properly prepped so it still had muck under it, If you've read the whole WIP then you'll be picking up on that the final finish was lacking however the panel work is spot on??!!??!!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010416.jpg
I also had my suspisions that an area of the floor was a little suspect under all the sealer, so first area of inspection was this area, and guess what!!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010411.jpg
So, it was a case of not just tidying up the floor area but
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010450.jpg
Strip it all!! so heres some pics of the last few nights work

First nights work resulted in this little pile
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010435.jpg
Also poked a bit more at that hole and got the grinder out (no pics of it ground)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010428.jpg
Easy enough to cut out and repair so thats sundays work!! I'm actualy not that bothered about it after thought as its made me think about the project in a whole new light and rather than just touching up and making do with it ive gone to the extreme that I have on the underneath.
2nd Nights work I did more stripping of the sealer
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010451.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010452.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010453.jpg
And to top it all off I also spotted this on the rear arch, not noticed it before due to it not being face on to me
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/underside/P1010432.jpg
Due to the imperfections ive found i've decided not to rush it, if its ready this year great, if it isnt then Its no loss, i've got the XE to use for shows.
I've got the bodyshop manager from work (main Vauxhall dealer) going to call in tomorrow night to have a look and if it isnt going to be to expensive then i'm going to get it repainted as ive also found a chip from when the car has been sat around so long.
If I get it done it'll be an in and out job as they dont like to keep cars sat around, It also needs no work so its just a rub down and paint. Im also going to trim the arches back a bit to fit some nice big wheels for some shows. While i'm waiting for a paint slot it means I can crack on with the likes of the brake pipes underneath so when its back the can just be bolted on. Shouldn't cause to much delay I hope!!
And finaly, found a sticker sat around to decided to brighten up the boot, even though it'll be pulled off to paint

most people hate working on older cars, and then they start doing stuff like that.
I just don't understand why you did not remove the underseal before getting the car painted :confused::confused:, it's one of the most important things to do with old cars. And tbh, painting over the old sealer is really :tard::tard::eek::eek:

Well small update! I looked at it today and thought yep............... Its still here!!
On a more serious note about it, I have gathered a few parts over the last year I will be using, got a mint set of early door mouldings for it also got a bit of motivation doing the sport.
I will be doing the floor on it in the coming months then the car will be built up and completed and then I can see what parts have been used on the other projects I've built since starting this (2 sports, 2 mk2 GSI reps) and then whats missing I need to find and replace. Then once I know what is missing I will strip it back down and sort out items for plating, painting, or powder coating etc. The it'll be time to crack on and build it!
I will get some pics in the next couple of weeks of how it sits now. If anyone is stripping a shell and scrapping it anytime soon with a good floor that they'd like to donate then i'd be a major help to get it underway.
Billing 2011? Maybe!
What's up with the floor ?
Floor pan or boot floor ?
If anyone is stripping a shell and scrapping it anytime soon with a good floor that they'd like to donate then i'd be a major help to get it underway.
Boot floor? Mine is solid, the erm, other floor is also solid but has a bit of a bend in the drivers side, lemme know if you want it, although it's a long way to travel, depends how desperate you are!

lee h had a shell that was free to anyone that would take it away dont know if its still there or condition of floor
novacabrio
27-07-10, 09:00 PM
The floor pan has rusted badly, basicly where they welded in the extra suport for the chassis it melted away the underseal and it was never replaced, hence bad rust on the floor. You can see the state of the chassis supports in page 2 or 3 I think in this thread, and what it has caused can be seen here
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94884&page=8
Thats basicly where the project has gone on hold back in 2008 and took a back seat. Split from my wife back end of 2008/early2009 so it wasn't a priority for me. Doing Paul's sport has given me the inspiration to carry on and start again where I left off.
Being for me and ultimatley it will be kept for years to come and for my son to enjoy in time so I want it to be done right and then it will last another 25 years so there is no rush as to when it will be done.
He will also have this to enjoy (110cc) until he can drive the real thing,

They were only ever available from Irmscher Uk, It is also in need of a mini restoration as the lights should work along with a radio etc. I know of 3 in existence (mine, Irmscher Germany have one and Russ Swift's son) I also know of the possible location of another 1 maybe 2 but I have never had the time or money to try and track them down, but 2 people have mentioned the strong possibility of them being there.
One thing that has impressed me looking back at this... Is how tidy my garage was back in 2008!!

Nope, it isn't wrong at all... Hadn't crossed my mind tbh, but hmmmm.....
Update on the WIP.. The sport is away for to be mapped, will update the Sport thread in the next 48hrs or so with Pics and Rolling road results etc. The spider floor needs alot of work so I have bought a E reg shell to donate some metal work from the floor to patch the spider. Mainly small sections but using an acctual floor I am hoping that it will save time and we won't have to shape metal etc. I have also been sorting the garage out and I can now get moved around the thing so all in good time it will get done (Only taken about 5 years so far!)

I not fitting the full floor, I had thought about cutting the floor out and then using " alot of metal" from the spider shell to rebuild it lol
But instead, the sections of the floor that I need will be cut from the Y reg floor. The idea being that it will save having to reshape metal to fit.

Not tackling it yourself Mark? Whats the turnaround on the whole job? Will it see Billing 2013?
novacabrio
24-07-12, 10:57 PM
I don't have the time Rich, decided to bite the bullet and let a pro do it, not sure an area as structurely important as a floor is wise to be tackled by a novice?
Turn around I'm not sure on, main thing is the floor to sort as he is doing it as a favour after finding out the story of the last place, then save for paint, floor should be a month or 2, but then reading back I did say in 2008-2009 ish that it was off for paint in 2 days I think so no rush!!
As you know life has changed an awful lot since this started so its taken a major back seat, if it's done for 2013 I'll be delighted, if not then maybe fingers crossed will of progressed a bit, certainly more than in the last 3-5 years

Spent this last week pottering on looking into getting some stuff done for the car, had some inspiration at the classic car show at the NEC after talking to some guys on the RS owners club stand.
I've bought myself a linisher (bench polisher) to polish all the nuts and bolts before I have them plated again so they get a much better finish.
I also have been looking into getting the aluminium bits cleaned and have found a local company who can help. He has done 50/50 on the irmscher Airbox for me, needless to say ill be getting every bit I can think done after seeing this!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/A2D444EC-A6C7-4B32-BE3B-AF83887825C1-9226-000003D9A703A0B9.jpg

Also.. he has put me in touch with a guy who does soda blasting, so I have decided to spend the extra bit money and have the floor properly cleaned back and etch primed. The guy turns out to be a friend of a friend and has offered to do the work for a cracking price! He usually works on yank stuff and is currently building himself some kind of 50s American car with S class merc engine etc running on air suspension etc!
Soda blasting is a very fine form of shot blasting, so mild you can even leave the glass and chrome on the car if you wish so it's ideal for what I need, full on shot blasting can result in panel distortion, and acid dipping is very expensive and only 2 places in the country are miles away so this should be just as good if not better!
His website...
http://www.rixmediaandsodablasting.co.uk/blasting_services.php
The soda blasting guy has then put me in touch with his friend!!!! Who is a body shop and has an interest in rarer cars and served his time in a Bentley and Porsche body shop, I'll be going to see him in the next few weeks to make some arrangements, they are next to each other so the hope is they can work together And maybe remove all the box section before blasting. And start from scratch with it!
That airbox is looking good mark, is that the vapour blasting guy, definatly going to have my gear box casing and some other bits done, we had some cast exhaust manifolds done and they came up like new.
Does clean it up real nice.

never noticed this thread. sense of de ja vu here. i dropped my opel gt to be soda blasted yesterday. i seen a 23 screen camper he did previously and id recommend it
Good to see soda blasting is finally making the main stream. Much better then any other type of blasting/acid baths etc etc.
And you are correct about leaving glass in etc. The last C2 R2 I built was soda blasted with all the window glass still intact, came back fine. Although the inside of the shell looked like there had been an explosion in a coke factory mind lol lol

Update today!! Actual work on the shell...
As the car is going to be blasted and put under a small amount of pressure, and then have sections cut out of the strenghtening support I decided it would be best to fit some extra support so that there was no chance of the shell folding in half. Due to my lack of welding skills I got my mate roped in to help....

Good work there mate.
Billing 2013???
Maybe!! I'd hope so, but no point in rushing it. I need to strip it fully back to a shell again, then Soda blast it all, then bring it home and replace the floor sections, then paint it. I had toyed with just blasting the floor areas but I think I may do the full shell just to be safe.
It'll all take time but it'll be worth it. I have also invested in some new parts from Germany so I should have nearly everything I need now to finish it.

There isn't anything forward of the bulk head, the car has extra box section on the sill areas then a large section across the front of the back seat.

More purchases....
Brand new headlight mounting rings, these only game mounted to the lights and weren't available (to my knowledge) separate so when the lights corrode you need to replace them, but they usually crack when you try to split them. My outer lights were past their best so I got some more cibie units ages ago but had no way to mount them. I managed to find a guy on the continent who'd had a small batch remade for himself and his friends and a little bit of negotiation later I had enough sent over to redo the 2 sets of lights I have in the garage....

Next delivery was this retrimmed Irmsher steering wheel, it had been listed on eBay and didn't sell, I messaged the guy and he agreed to sell me it, so a cheeky offer later and it was mine! It's been stitched with white stitching which isn't original but I think it'll worth well with the white car?

Nice purchases there mate.
ive got two irmscher grills and headlamp sets with the spider. one set of lamps are lhd and the other rhd i think. also got a irmscher front bumper in my spares for it too. ill have to check the rings on my lamps to see what they are like

You can split the old rings Elgan. The lamps are just normal Cibie units which you can get from Demon Thieves etc, 5.25" I think they are. Split the rings with a thin sharp knife and re-glue them on the new lamps. I am going to replace the adjusters on mine with stainless bolts to stop them corroding :thumb:

Although the car is still on Isle of Man plates it will be registered on UK plates when done, after speaking to dvla it looks like I'll be ok to have it registered onto the original plate. I managed to find a guy who had an original Steve thomsons cars plate on his car and he sent me all the measurements. I managed to then find a company to recreate them for me along with the rear window sticker..

Small update, managed to pick these up at the weekend, brand new light units, I had some brand new inners but the outers are mega rare. You can buy the lenses from demon tweaks but when these came up I though why not! Bought them with a twin headlight grill, took the lights from the kit, replaced them with my secondhand lights and sold the kit back on for what I paid, one happy man has twin headlights and knows what I paid etc, one happy man has new lights for free!!

Small update.....
The Spider has gone for the floor work to be done finally by my mate Steve who's been on the Vauxhall scene for years so knows what's needed. He's built a few Viva's with V8s, a Chevette HSR, Firenza HP and a Bedford CF daily driver with a Carlton GSI 6 pot lump in it!!
Car out the garage for the first time in about 6 years...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3522_zpsaaf7cab4.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3522_zpsaaf7cab4.jpg.html)
ready for work
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3523_zps1a0fb8a7.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3523_zps1a0fb8a7.jpg.html)
then set about cutting the rot and bad repairs out
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3760_zps35caa07e.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3760_zps35caa07e.jpg.html)
As much original metal has been left as possible, and the floor numbers have been left untouched
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3761_zpsdceab6a2.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3761_zpsdceab6a2.jpg.html)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3763_zps4d235d9c.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3763_zps4d235d9c.jpg.html)
The near side has been left untouched for now so that the box sections can be used as a reference
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3769_zps014155b6.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3769_zps014155b6.jpg.html)
The footwell has a area that is double skinned and when the strengthening has been cut out it would seem that when the box section is put in that as well as the sections that run front to back haven't been under sealed and have caused rot on the floor that is visable, the front section has burnt through the floor and into this section so again it's been all cut out. The section from the shell I cut up is spotless though so replacing isn't a problem.
Nice view of Steve's foot!! Also shows how little rust prevention is on the inside of the out riggers on the floor.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3767_zps9514ac73.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3767_zps9514ac73.jpg.html)

Also cut outa section of the box section that goes side to to get into the rear seam that all Nova's seem to go on.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/man31c/floor/IMG_3765_zps2bf38573.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/man31c/media/floor/IMG_3765_zps2bf38573.jpg.html)
Then the fun part! Filling the holes
Front floor section is tacked in place and lined up
