Hello all, New here but have been looking around here for a while :)

Thought i would post up pics of my 1st project car!, brought it off ebay just before xmas on ebay for the sum of ?155.

picked it up xmas eve and it was better than i thought, knowing novas from when my family had novas, needed new wings, new passenger door, welding in the boot, that was all i knew after just 5mins on the lift.

Since then ive done bits of work to her like change the wings, oil change, good clean, but still havent got round to do the welding, or change the door!

Now the car is ready for a clutch change, a new cv, and two cv boots soon when the workshop is empty.

Pictures:
When i brought it:

The rear valance after an attack of the rust and primer:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/nova3.jpg

Hole in boot, still yet to be welded:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/nova-12.jpg

Then decided i didnt like the mk1 dash, so i riped it out:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0382.jpg

And fitted a mk2 dash:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0435.jpg

From the same guy i brought some 14's for ?30
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0379.jpg

With some money from the parents, i brought some undersealer and coated the arches and inner wings, while spraying the front valance after it had been sanded to get rid of the surface rust:

Replaced the rotten wings:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0420.jpg

found another couple of rust holes on both rear arches (one is treated with krust to keep it from getting worse before its welded):
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0414.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0442.jpg

Brought a new rear GTE bumper and de-badged the boot:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0436.jpg

Took the rear seats and everything out the boot to give it a clean, and have since decided to have a van panel:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0444.jpg

Finally this is how it is now:

Sorry for the very long posts but had to round up 3months in 2posts!

AlexW

Plans:
Welding done for mot, and mot'ed and taxed
Van Panel
5 New tyres so i can put on my alloys
GTE front bumper and side skirts
Respray (same colour, but the bumpers will be colour coded but the front and rear splitter will be black same as the skirts)
GTE/Gsi vinal
Colour coded spoiler, boot handle, door handles and wing mirrors.
Sri steering wheel
Maybe a engine change, might be getting a 1.3 soon

Think thats all

Looks to be in very good shape besides the odd bit of rust, always loved that colour on a mk1.

A reckon a mk2 sri blue interior would look ace, I take it you're going for the gte look with the colour coded bits?

Nice project though :thumb:

That colour is a pain, i guess its faded, so now the front valance is not the right colour, just as well im getting a gte front bumper and a respray (when i can afford it)

Correct, i want a sri interior but atm thats a long way off, want the exterior A1 1st, and yer GTE/GSI look-a-like

Looking good mate how easy was it to fit the mk2 dash plus do you have rev counter now then

Most of it is straight forward, the loom needs changing though, but that just plugs in most of the way. Only problem is the centre consol dosnt fit great but could be sorted. Rev counter was just a bit of wiring connecting the coil to the loom, just change the plug.

Its so anyoying waiting for other people As im waiting for parts and the workshop space...

Thanks for the comments

Tomorrow im going to cut my grill about to make it look like a sr grill for free, going to get some mesh off my brother i think.
Dunno what it will look like but meh cant be worse than my nova already. need more jobs to do though, ran out of money and things to do to it, as it has to be able to move 99% of the time with my brothers project also behind mine :(

Anyways if you have any ideas of jobs i could do let me know (apart from cleaning)

Edit: Decided after a quick flick through the haynes manual that im going to remove the shocks and springs tomorrow for a good clean, also going to clean the drums and give them a lick of paint...
About the springs and shocks... is it really that easy to get them out? seems to just be a simple job of axle stands and a bit of jacking to un-do the bolt....

novaowner999

depends how rusty your nova is, but yours looks quite solid

Yep the suspension is so easy even I can do it! Juts a case of a couple of axle stands and four bolts.

That door doesnt look too bad, surely you could get a plate welded in an filled over? For the age of it i'd say its in good nic!

Depending if i find another door close to home i might plate it, but its rotten along the bottom, tbh i might just bodge it for the mot and worry about it at a later date. The drivers door is just dented and bent, and also rotten along the bottom.
Just got to hope it dosnt rain anymore today now, by the way thanks for the reasurance (sp) that the suspension is a half easy job ( i hope)

If you're removing the struts, have something there to support the hubs whilst they're off. Don't just leave them dangling on the brake flexi-pipes.

Good luck and keep it up.

p.s. have you managed to use the mk2 heater blower switch with the mk1 wiring?

Yer i know, i will and the switch, i used a mk2 loom rather than cutting up my old one just cut the loom at the passenger door. only problem i had was i think 2 of the engine connectors were different.

Shaun_O'Donnell

Good thinking.

I once fitted a mk1 SR engine into a mk2, trasnferred all the wiring across, but the heater blower switch from the mk2 dash wouldn't run the blower any more than the slowest speed. Had to settle for the mk1 switch in a mk2 dash. T'was the wife's car at the time so wasn't too bothered.

Cheers,

Shaun.

Its been a fun day, sort of. My nova looks like its doing a stoppy (sp) but the springs are now red, drums and shocks are black, and will finish it off tomorrow, by undersealing the arches behind the shocks as that area was missed when the undersealing was done.

Pictures:
Took the rear n/s wheel off and saw this, Where did that come from it wasnt there when i undersealed it.

choped my grill up, just need to sand down the end bits and filler it. (its mainly somthing to do when i have nothing to do

Painted drums and shock.

As it is now doing a stoppie and the dodgy grill, i might just get a sr one but meh, this might be a one off. HA yer right!

Decided in the freezing cold would be the best place to start sanding my rear bumper ready for paint. Im temped to try and clean up where the red strip or paint over it?
Hopfully my cvs and maybe my clutch will be getting done tonight, im looking forward to stalling my car which was once inpossable to stall....

Pics of bumper half sanded:

Just a little update, Clutch and cvs done although the outer drivers side cv needs doing too i found out... decided i would fit my digi dash, just need to finilase a deal with somone about a transducer and might buy another complete dash. but for now im just going to wire in my digi, also going to finish sanding my bumper and give it a layer of primer..

Comments Welcome.

Yes im going to collect a free 1.4injection engine from just up the road, just needs a headgasket, so im going to strip my nova and buy the bits i need like the fuel tank and brakes (brakes from a 2.0 cav but fit under my 14inch alloys) and of course all the other things.

The engine includes everything, loom, ecu, gbox, alternator, starter, coil, maybe the fuel pump but everything :)

Got my new transducer just need to wire it all up when i get chance now.

But short-term plans are:
Pick up engine at weekend
Wire up digi dash
Buy astra electric adjust and heated mirrors
Fit " " " " " "
Strip out engine, gbox and all running gear plus petrol tank
Buy brakes
Fit "
Buy head gasket kit
Buy and fit at least two tyres for my alloys
Buy fuel tank and fit
Buy all other bits needed for conversion
Fit head gasket
Fit engine, gbox and everything
Fire It up!
Have A Great Car!

^Think Thats all

Comments please, on this my very first engine change :) :thumb:

that nova is a nice nova, i hope you make a good job of everything and dont just patch and fill the cosmetics. that will be a shame and will not last a long time. it will be a false economy if it fails its next MOT.

iam glad your are going to treat this nova well! a good nova is something to cherrish. so many rotten novas are 'restored' by fitting new wings, a slam panel and filling the doors and arches with fiberglass and cataloy. it is a shame that many only look good from the outside. it is like a zebra that has lay dead in the desert for a few days, on the outside it is a very beautiful creature, but open it up and look inside and it will be rotten and smelly.
treat your nova with the love it deserves!!!!!!

Same i didnt want one untill i saw a few of them and when i got my mk2 dash it was wrong not to fit one!

Anyways not much of an update but meh got to be done lol

Got my **** into gear and got the anoying blue strips off the sides at last just need to get the glue off and get the stuff of from the bump strips.
Broke my gfs hair dryer but at least it lasted untill i got both sides done ( i only had to do the quarter on the passenger side due to new door)

Pics:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0572-1.jpg

Also finished sanding my bumper now i just have to put in the hours getting all the paint from the groves and using filler to smooth any dents/scratchs.
Pic:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0570-1.jpg

Found more surface rust to be delt with when the engine is out!
Pic:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0579.jpg

Got bored so decided to clean the engine a little even though its coming out soon ready for the 1.4i! cleaned the oil filler cap and a bit of the rocker cover with a rotary tool with a wire bush attachment and didnt come out to bad for a rubbish attempt.

Never driven one but the gte/gsi engines are a good laugh in a nova.

I have nothing better to but wait for an email to say ive had a reply LOL

And yes its the same as the sri but the engine is from a mk3 astra, going to get it tomorrow after the clutch died on the work van on the way to collect it sunday. when i get it im going to do the head gasket and see if there is any cheap mods i can do to it.

I would love a gte/gsi engine but cant afford it, this engine is free so... and it includes everything

Havnt updated for a reason, Ive run out of jobs to do and money!

But ive done some little things. My short term plans atm are get the engine out this weekend and remove the brakes ready for some 256mm brakes!, i know i could go bigger but i want my 3 spokes as there so many novas not running them now!. trying to find all the bits i need to fit this engine, got to buy a head and a few other inportant things but even if i dont have all the parts the engine will be going in as i have a use of a hoist again i 2weeks.

Anyone have a soloution to this: pic isnt best but you can see:

Not updated in a while.

My Little 1.2Carb is out, waiting to be split or sold as one. engine bay is half cleaned ready for all the surface rust to be sorted (Theres loads, even in places i didnt even know) Going to sort the rust and primer it and maybe paint it haze blue, Breeze blue or black. Which do you think?

Trying to get all my parts to upgrade to this 1.4, waiting for my head and brakes, then its sorting the last few bits.

Going to buy some Astra electric mirrors and cut up my center console to house the switch i already have.

Will get pics tomorrow.

Long overdue update...

Ive been poking around my it latly and keep finding rot, deffentaly needs a front panel, passenger arch, drivers rear seal/lower arch, rear valance, and patchs on the rear chassis rail, inside boot, and inside the drivers rear arch.

Havnt done much to talk about but thats due to having to save for other things... But im hoping ive just paid for having the welding done, my brother is good friends with a welder, and as ive been helping him out with work when ive had days off from mine he might get it done ASAP.

this is going to be a Very slow project....

keep up good work and dont give up. my last nova was 1.2i which was bit rough but i striped it all down and put gte engine in lowered it and got cheap set alloys just to get it on road and have some fun took me nearly 6 months to get to that stage but felt like years lol and a was saving up to get body sorted and sprayed when some f****** t**** took a liking to my stereo and put all four side windows in took my cd player & speakers and busted the steering and keyed it up and down. so lost interest after that took good bits off and scraped it last year but still got loads of bits left that were to go on to it so hope to wee car like yours soon to plug away at. all best with it mate

Been to bedford today to look at a 1.4 sr that was being broken, thought about buying the whole car, untill i saw it and heard its past... Cat C write off.

Anyways, I went for the carb, dizzy and doorcards.

Another pic of my brakes, that now fit proplery without rubbing at all.

Looks good, nice one for keeping the 3 spokes and making the brakes work with them. Too bad you can't get wider tyres on them otherwise I'd probably do the same.

Nice mod on the centre console mate :)

Its alrite, its not great as i intend to re-do it with more care. It will be ok for now as its not seen too well.

I've always loved the 3spokes as its orignal and i always said i would have another nova with 3 spokes.

Havnt updated buy have done a fair bit of hard work (lol)

The rust bucket now starts, just need to fine tune the idle and run it up to temp for the first time. Sounds loud and has a few knocks etc from being rebuilt im told, No bottom end knocking so good there.

Need to buy a few things like exhaust rubbers as its hitting the floor with only a couple of cable ties holding it on the car.

I will upload a vid of it running soon.

Other than that i got my GSI brake master cylinder and braided hoses. Just need to have new brake lines made up by my brothers friend.

Next is to get the last engine/brake/exhaust parts and then just patch the front panel for now to get it through a mot (Its not a show car) Then all the other welding and its ready for the road.

Comments Please!

I know its got a very loud tapping but was assured it will disapear once its been up the road.

it lives !
good thread m8, alot of improvement by the looks of it, gte look :thumb:
i need to get me some of that 'krust' stuff you been using, looks like it actually works, and i know my nova needs it.
good one for keepin the 3 spokes, i never used to like them myself, but theyve grown on me loads over the last coupla years and i see em as a classic rim on nova's now.
top job on the caliper grind, id be too scared to chop that much metal of parts like that myself lol, mind you saying that i ground down the crank pulley on djshaggeh's xe (while it was still on the car ! ) and that went ok, professional lighten and balance job ;)
the engine quietened down now ? im thinkin of rebiulding a 1.4 too.

AlexW
11-07-08, 09:39 AM
Krust seems to work, although for me its just a temp solution as otherwise it would just come through from the other side.

Its still got a bit of the tapping but it still needs a good run, as so far its only moved about 10ft and that was without brakes.

Theres a few reasons i went with a 1.4, engine was free to start with and i decided it would be best as its cheaper on tax and insurance. Also as i converted it to carb i didnt need to do any mods to fuel lines or fuel tank.

Steve
11-07-08, 09:07 PM
Good work mate, yeat tapping should go or at least die down but the 8vs always tap a bit anyway.

That your mk1 mr2? Quite like them

AlexW
11-07-08, 09:39 PM
Its my brothers mr2 although i do a lot of work to it. Its just having the bodywork sorted. Looks like it had a hard rear shunt and two new quarters and rear panel. But wasnt done very good. but he has his other floor/chassis rotten white one. Which will be used as repair panels.

what carbs that, a 2e ?
if so, any idea whats it like in comparison to this 32/34 weber people talk about ?
and one more question, lol twenty questions.. did u clean the tops of the pistons on the block, what kinda stuff do you use to get that hefty coke off with, will petrol do it ? i was thinkin using a 1.4 block on my 1.2 and not rebuilding it hefty, just take everything apart give it a clean, put it all back with new piston rings, slap the 1.2 head on it and see what happens.
is that a 1.3sr inlet ? i heard a bunch of people say the 1.4 square inlet needs to be replaced with a 1.3sr, no ones said anything about the 1.2 inlet tho, it allready matches the head, what about the carb end, will an 2e carb not fit ? and in that pic u got the dizzy and coil, any idea if its ok to use the standard breakerless ignition

and, and, and, and... sorry m8, **** load of questions up there

I will be, the drivers side i shall be eather buying a complete quarter as a arch repair panel dosnt go along the side enough, would mean using arch and sill repair panels.

The passenger side im going to buy a quarter as i dont know the damage to it due to it being caked in fiber glass. And i will use your idea and buy a repair panel too, and if i have to make up any ive got some thinish metal that is easy to bend.

Havnt got a clue about the webber carb mate. i just put a rag around the pistons after shooting them with the airgun, the engine has only done 64k so i know it dosnt need much attention. The inlet is a 1.4 Sr as the 1.2/1.3 inlet have almost round ports while the 1.4 has square. But it is a 2E carb, auto choke. No idea about the ingition, i just went for the orignal Sr setup. If it aint broke dont fix it.

jimbob-mcgrew
12-07-08, 02:35 PM
no worries m8, i know u were using the whole 1.4 setup, i just thought id ask, see if you knew, ever thought about using the 1.2 head ? did u line the timings marks up yourself and put the cambelt on and adjust the dizzy all yourself ? was that bit hard, im a bit worried about that bit, put it together wrong and itll end up killing itself straight up

AlexW
12-07-08, 03:53 PM
Yep all timed up by myself, the dizzy just needed a tad of adjustment and it runs sweet.

I was told about the 1.2 head but too much work, this will just be a daily driver so not botherd, although i will be putting a sr/gte/gsi exhaust on it and a few other things like filter etc.

Have been busy.... Picked up a load of parts i won of gay-bay. Included some 40mm drop springs, so they went on saturday. Also won a Passenger rear quarter for £12.50 Bargin!. Should be cutting off my old one soonish.

Having problems with my brakes... All fitted now but having problems bleeding them.. And also found the master cylinder was faulty, so swaped that with my old one.

Overall im hoping to have this done by end of september.. Just a lot of work and money needed. What is really holding me back is my lack of welding skills and i dont have the confidance to go and try it myself lol

It Will be done Just One day!

AlexW
18-07-08, 10:40 AM
Slight update. Brakes work great, those front brakes are really overkill lol.

Today i plan to just sort the leak at the passenger front brake and clear out the boot and front.

The passenger quarter might be coming off next week. Im trying to get together all the repair panels i need so all my mate who can weld has to do is weld them on over a day or two.

Anyways heres some pics now it sits lower.

Why's the rear quarter coming off? doesnt look that bad as it is, cool project though, will look ace when its all painted, that blue is getting quite rare now.

AlexW
18-07-08, 12:53 PM
The arch has been fiberglassed before i brought it and it has a few dents, and as the quarter was only £12.50 it will also make my life easyer.

If you mean the drivers side too its because i think it wil be easyer to get one insted of a arch repair panel and a sill repair panel.

AlexW
21-07-08, 12:33 PM
Just orded a couple of repair panels, still need to get a front panel and then i can send it off to my mate for welding

AlexW
23-07-08, 08:33 PM
Been at work on the rust bucket over the last few days.

Got most of the panels i need, just need to order another arch panel and a xmember.

Been poking about the rear today as im hoping to do as much as i can.
Just a few pics to show what 19yrs of life has done to my car!

Passenger chassis leg, just a smallish hole.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0741.jpg

Drivers side. This side is a lot worse.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0737.jpg

This is the drivers side chassis leg from inside, as you can see the rest of the chassis leg that attchs to the boot has rotted out. I plan to put the new patch on the outside due to space and it should be soo much easyer then having to pull off the towing eye.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0738.jpg
That pic you can see inside the boot and through the hole further down the chassis to the hole in the arch lol

Tomorrow im planning on cutting some of that panel off to see the real damage. I shall also be cutting the bonnet, to allow me to keep my astra spi air intake elbow.

Comments please. Good or bad.

To get it motable:
Change the front driveshaft for the one i have spare.
Change front x-member
Weld up chassis legs
Replace the drivers sill/arch.

And then it should be Motable (I hope)

Surely the pollen filters have a flaw, the intake vents for the blowers are along the top skuttle panel?!

no there at the sides.

loggyboy
11-08-08, 10:15 AM
yeah the filters are... but the skuttle panel has openings, so any pollen will bypass the filters and enter the car from above.

** edit ignore me, it looked like the filters went at the very ends... i realise now they sit under the light plastic panel that encases the blower motor. (i dont have one on mine so i forgot it had one!)

I thought 15mm and someone told me 35mm - I doubt it would be 35mm from standard though

loggyboy
11-08-08, 02:32 PM
it states 15mm
but when i lowered my old 1.0 with 40mm spax springs, it made it only 10mm lower than My SRi on standard springs, possibly slightly down to weight. But more likely that the standard SRi had sagged with age!

Il start at the other day. Started it afteer a bit of hesitance. Ran it up to temp. Parked it back, turned it off, and got out to see all my coolant spewing out the front, lots and lots of steam too. Opened the bonnet after i waited until it cooled down. To find, My header tank split! damm

Sweet, you still selling the greeny one and keeping the mk1 project? Nice find on the astra gte seats, you re-trimming the rears to match?

Lol, i was having a discussion in png chat today that its not green, but miami blue, My family call it the blue one even though both are blue.

But whatever, im keeping this one, ive spent too much on it and i love it lol

Astra seats include the rears, 60/40 split. Im temped to retrim them anyways as the fronts arent in great cond, but i cant argue for £15. I was thinking, the middle in blue fabric, and the bolsters etc in black leather, same on door cards.

AlexW
02-10-08, 10:54 AM
Not really update.

Im temped to break this and buy something else. Ive lost the love for it and im fed up of waiting for other people. Its being used as a shed and there is so many things wrong with it.

I dont have the motivation to finish it.

Seriously mate you cant sell it, at least you've got use of another car while you wait to get it sorted, im in the same position with my 2.0, it doesnt need much to get it back on the road, mostly the insurance thats the killer!

If you've already spent alot on it then its not worth breaking to only get some of it back, bit of patience and a bit more money and it'll be done. :thumb:

AlexW
02-10-08, 11:30 AM

Kinda a update.

Im trying to collect bits so the welding can get done ASAP, Ive spoke to paul on here and i think he may end up welding it for me.

Today i started the car for the 1st time in months, after forgetting to plug the dizzy back in it jumped into life. I also fitted my new 1.6 rad thanks to Kev16v.

Im trying to think of things i can do to it, but theres simply nothing i can do! Im also trying to get the Mk2 nova to a state where i trust it enough so i can use it daily.

The fate of the nova has been decided............. I love the car too much.

Now i have the mk2 to mess about in (litlery its scary around mini roundabouts)

So ive decided to do this one right, make it the best nova il ever own.

Car will be emptyed out inside and i want to strip down the front/engine bay again. I plan to fit things like power steering, corsa brake setup. Roll cage, bucket seats, a 1.4 16v (possibly turbo), and most inportantly little things like electric sunroof, euro twin reverse rear lights, a good sound system in the back, with custom door cards and electric windows and mirrors.

Man thats expensive. Every little bit of rust i hope to treat. Maybe one day it will be finished :)

Glad you decided to keep it, as you say you've got an everyday car so at least you wont have to rush it.

Tbh power steering in a nova is a bit pointless, I have no problems without it on my 2.0, main thing is to make sure your tyres are properly inflated :thumb:

Me being the lazy bugger i am i would rather have power steering, I get your point but if i get the engine i want il be weighing down the front more than a 2.0 :)

Im going to try and get it to move under its own power soon, need to buy some jubliee clips and swap the battery from the mk2, but fingers crossed it all still works.

Nova will have more work done now as my brothers mr2 has gone for paint.

I moved it out and got it running (Thanks to kevo16v for the rad and header tank)

Bit of a mess and the seat was only sat in there, not on the runners as there wasnt enough space with all the stuff around it.

Strip down has started. Brakes, suspension, interior have already been taken off.

My little bro rang me yesterday and asked if he could get on with somthing on the mk1 nova. I laughed and said take the engine out, Little did i know he actualy agreed!

Today i spent the morning in hospital (misses crashed her fiesta, but shes ok)

Meanwhile my brother had everything disconnected from the engine and got on with pulling it out  Being 15 and never taking a engine out on his own i was expecting to find a ruined car and engine lol

But Pics to prove it happend lol
All pics taken by my brother (and half written by him)
Yesterday the car looked like this:

I told him to lower it on the front panel, its fooked anyways.
And the sump is undamaged :thumb: Shafts etc were tied up to be out the way.

Tbh it needs more work than is viable.
