Hi everyone, i been trying to find a scrappy around my area and now i have found one but i am in a bit of a "pickle" lol. This is gonna sound stupid, but whats the general procedure when you go to a scrappy? I know noone in my family that has been to one befor, and im the only one out of my mates that have a car. So i turn to the good people of PNG for help. To break it down, what i wonna do is hopefully find a scrappy that has a gsi nova in stock so i could possibly gt the bumpers and mabey some interior bits n bobs. But im unsure what to say + do when i actualy get there.
Any help would be brilliant people.
Tom (The Nooby-ish guy in town right now lol)lol

Depends on the scrappy.

Some of them you can wander around and pick bits off what you want, then you pay for them on the way out. Others you tell them what you want and they'll see if they've got any and remove it for you. These are normally more expensive though (and probably smaller/specialised to a manufacturer).

Either way, you'll be lucky to find a GSi in the scrappy. Even luckier if you find one still with its bumpers etc! The upper spec Novas always get stripped before I see them at my regular scrappy!

dont worry about it mate, just go down your local scrappy, every scrappy deals with people in differnt ways some just let you wonder round havin a look and take the bits of your self, some like to take them of there selfs so you dont steal anything in the process, just go down there and speak to some one there normally quite helpfull because they want your money lol
Dont foregt to take your own tools aswell because the the tools they have are always s##t lol

Novas are old now too & fairly rare in scrapyards. The scrapyards near me are all poor & have nothing newish or decent ever & Novas are still rare.

Typically just arrive & if you are allowed in to scavenge yourself just tell them you are after numerous bits off an Astra & possibly may find the bits on a Corsa. That should allow you access to the Vauxhalls if they stack them all together & have a rummage.

Some of them want to know exactly what you want which is daft if they want your money, its easy to upgrade cars with scrapyard parts but you might not necessarily know what you want in which case rummaging about in cars might generate them extra sales. Also most yards price everything to the nearest fiver or tenner, so make sure some stuff falls into your tool box or socks in order that you dont pay a tenner for something small & measely.

Wear crap shoes too, especially this time of year, maybe some newspaper in the car for cleaning up on.

Just my advice. :thumb:

Always go to the desk before you venture in and say what you are after, I find if you aren't too specific some scrappers can take the p1ss when pricing up the parts as they think you are a noob. Also, for some reason I find its best not to take a car load of mates down...

Maybe its best to ring scrappers out of the Yellow Pages before you head out. I've wasted days of time and gallons of fuel on the off chance certain Novas/parts might be there, only to leave empty handed.

Well for bumpers, the best probable place to find them is most likely here to be honest!

If you do feel the urge to borrow some stuff be careful, some scrapyards tend to follow you if they not busy and have members of staff free, just to see what your pocketing.

Also remember to barter! Ive taken bits off cars in the past, gone to pay for them only to find that they want stupid amounts of cash. If they know that it hasnt bothered you spending time taking bits off and are prepared to walk away empty handed they're more open to negotiation.

Be prepared for them to search your toolboxes aswell if its a wander around scrapyard!

Dont take loads of people as someone already mentioned, makes them more open to suspicion.

Wear old clothing and footwear seeing as the weathers rubbish and also latex gloves.

Last but not least, your safety is important. Theres lots of cars perched on top of another, just watch yourself when you open the doors of the cars on the bottom of the pile, it can make the pile unsafe as the lower ones wont be as structurally safe.

Have a good time, you can have a right good time at scrapyards, I spend can spend hours and hours wandering around!

I usually find the only tools you need are an adjustable spanner, 2x screw drivers (philips and flathead) and pliers/snips.

I used to just turn up and poke my head into the cabin, ask if they had any novas in. Nowadays its probably best to ring beforehand as there's not many of them about in scrappys any more. Always wise to have an idea of what parts you're after too in case they ask and you don't seem like a drifter who's out to pocket some bits.

Good luck finding one of them, its bad enough just seeing anything above a SR spec.

Ive never seen a Sr/SRi/Gte/Gsi at my local scrappy.
If they do have any novas in, there 1.2i's, or 5dr's
