well i have had the nova a while nearly a year now but have still only done 800 miles in the car, have done 3 track days
llandow twice and recently did brands hatch indy circuit and i was managing to hit 1 min flat a lap which i thought was pretty good, that was with a bog standard xe! with no diff either

previous progress can be seen on this thread

http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80035&highlight=nova+track+star

anyways i bought carbs (twin45's) inlet and exhaust manifold linkages etc for the nova was going to go throttle bodies but then with the age and look of the car old skool i decided that carbs should be the way forward so i set about fitting th carbs i thought how hard can it be! well it was rubbish to say the least so i took the car up to a guy called tommy at wilfield motors has tunned xe's since 88! his name is big in grasstrack circles and is an absolute demon when it comes to carbs! he also sells a motorsport kit for the xe i.e replaces the 1600 cavalier dizzy coil and ignition amplifier that i was using previously, and replaces them with a brand new dizzy coil and igniton amplifier the dizzy is designed fro the xe with a much better advance curve and it doesnt and the vacuum advance unit on the side!
the car was away for 2 weeks waitng for the 'motorsport kit' to turn up and also due to the fact the setup i had bought second hand i was sold it beliving what the guy told me that the kit was mint all jetted right etc well tommy had to strip and rebuild the carbs he had to skim 1.5mm on the inlet manifold due to it being warped! and rejetted them etc

well the out come was 189bhp and 168ftlbs on 95 ron fuel (he told me to run it on 99 or higher) still on standard engine didnt even fit the sbd exhaust manifold i have! i have also ordered with him aswell which shoiuld arrive at the end of the month CAT CAMS and verniers from belguim these are made from blanks and not reprofiled made to any spec you want! so with manifold and cams he said 195 bhp is achievable

well the car is faultless idles from stone cold with the first turn of the key, idles when hot when cold, revs freely no hesitation i have heard horror stories about carbs but i no i have made the right decision and the bhp and torque figures speak for them selves!

well a little update after winning the f20 fitted with quaife 80% locked plate diff a while ago i went up and collected to day from way up north somewhere

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00205-1.jpg

it will be fitted tomorrow the diff and bpx are old like 10 years old but have only done 4 rallies the guy told me and has been sat for 5-6 years in his garage so hopefully will be ok not sure what to look for to check for play etc and not to sure on the right oil to use!

any help on the above would be great

Just fit it and see! Be mint.

You might need to put some oil in it though

well to day i fitted the quaife plate diff'd f20 that i collected from way way up north yesterday, the diff is 80% :thumb:

well the box change turned out to be harder than expected normally 2 hours can have the job done and the car driving but this took about 3 and a 1/2 mainly due to the input shaft staying in the flywheel, the box is a recon box and obviously some forgot to secure the input shaft!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/inputshaft-1.jpg

we had to tilt the engine at a radical angle and pull the box past the input shaft very awkward in a nova but we got it done

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/input2.jpg

sure a bolt or fixing must screw into the engine on the input shaft

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/input3.jpg

quick pic of my ap uprated clutch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/ap.jpg

the new f20 with the diff went on in a matter of seconds

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/boxin.jpg

all the mounts on and linkage just ahd to fit tie bar

Nice work mate, must make it so easy having a ramp to use lol

And yeah, that input shaft is missing a securing bolt and a circlip.

24-03-08, 05:16 PM
yeah just a little just makes things a lot quicker me and will f couldnt understand why the box would drop down untill we looked in the gap between the bellhousing and the block and saw the shaft took us about 30 mins of wrestling to get the box past the cable arm was catch on everything,

Nice figures and nice progress. Should you not have the hose going into the top of the breather tank?? Surely any oil sludge etc will be able to just run back into the engine there???

Mike
24-03-08, 05:28 PM
Nioce little bit of mincing that cheif :D

Any more pics of that Es'cos too lol

24-03-08, 05:31 PM
yeah well the engine doesnt breath at all the tanks been on there for a month now and there isnt even any condensation in there! but yeah i thought it should be at the top it is only a temp measure till i get a proper non chavy one made of i buy one!

corsakid
24-03-08, 05:33 PM
future plans are fit the cat cams that i have order and verniers, and that will hopefully see me into the 195bhp region fit my sbd exhaust manifold, and i am gunna tid y the interior which i have been meaning to do for the last 10 months

Adam
24-03-08, 05:36 PM
Sounds good mate.
Who are you getting the CatCams through(which supplier?)

corsakid
24-03-08, 05:41 PM
the guy who set the carbs up tommy up wilfield motors! cat cams are made from blanks and are made to any spec you want, they take a good few weeks to come but itll be worth it

Cool. My XE breathes like an astmatic! It filled the Bailey breather tank I've got twice last year!! Carried out the SBD breather mod this year so I'll see if that makes a difference!

corsakid
24-03-08, 05:51 PM
i havent done anything the engine is very very very low mileage, was thinking about doing the breather mod but when it doesnt breathe i dont see a need for it! mayeb i am pretty lucky i was expecting it to fill up under cornering and hard driving but nothing, gunna give the car some stick tomorrow as people say the plate diffs are hard to control, the 10 mile roadtest home was unbelievable no death torque steer on spinning was grip and lots of it!

well just thought i would post up what happened to the nova on saturday afternoon was on my way to will f's dads garage to repalce the drive shaft seal on the box as it was leaking slightly and to remove all the not needed brakets and suports and hopefully fit the cav internal gear shifter i have been wanting to do since i built the car well anys ways was drivng down a dual carridgeway mindig my own buisnes half way along the carridge way theres a crossroads well some guy in a big iveco box van decided to jump a set of lights and i hit him at around 40-45 mph as he cut in front of me! and this is the result to say i am guitted is an understatement nova stood up really well considereing! its minor damage really chassis legs still ok and the car drives despite the two front engine mounts snapping and the engine trying its best to fall out on the dual carridgeway.

not sure weather to repair it i no ever witht he mods declared with my insurance they will just write the car offf so do get another shell repair this one!

Jim

Sorry to hear about the accident. At least you're ok.

I'd be tempted to re-shell. I don't know how strengthened the car was, but your car is over 20 years old and they're not exactly 5* when it comes to the safety ratings. If it was my car I'd be very suspicious of how strong the rest of the shell is after a bump like that. Even more so if the vehicles main use is as a track car.

Again, sorry for what’s happened, and I don't want to upset you more by my comments, but safety over sentimentality should come first.

proper gutted for you. if you were doing 40-45 i suprised how well its took it

corsakid
01-04-08, 03:57 PM
well the shell stodd up really well did bounce of the van so that probably helped to disapate the forces envolved int he impact, the shell has all been seem welded etc no plates as such etc like the h h kits, i know what you mean jim i just know its an easy repair, but i know i really should get a new shell the repair doesnt bother me that much but its the fact the car has now had a bump, not sure what to do

Rich
01-04-08, 04:43 PM
That does look like it stood up well, no way 40mph

How is the rest of the shell for rot? If its a good solid one then maybe it is worth getting it on a jig/new panels. But then for the cost of the work/parts, you could probably find another shell to rebuild it.

Shame because its a nice early nova, b reg :)

:(
Was a really nice, cleamn car too - gutted..

corsakid
01-04-08, 05:11 PM
it happened on a dual carridgeway i was going slow in regards to the speedlimit of 70 but was deffo 40-45 mph
these is no rot anywhere oin the shell is a 33k shell have mots to prove never been welded! apart form a new fron tpanel i fitted august time last year!

Adam
01-04-08, 05:16 PM
Doh, thats not good :(
As others have said, 45mph, thats took very well.

Best get it stripped down, and then taking some measurements to see if anythings bent.

corsakid
01-04-08, 08:50 PM
it bounched backwards after i hit the van i think due to the fact the nova is relatively light, if it were to have more weight to it i reckon the nova would of absorbed more of the impact energy and created more damage but as it happened i think most of it disapated,
yeah i am looking at a couple of options i really loved this nova so a repair is the obvious route to take
but do i just get another nova and just swap my bits over, there are a couple good shells around,
i just dont know what to do

John
01-04-08, 09:06 PM
Looks like the n/s chassis leg has bore the brunt of it. Gutted for you fella. Strip it down and see how bad it is, if the legs bent i'd say bin it. Dave marshall has quite a clean mk1 for sale iirc.

Fear not, we will get all the running gear into another shell if this one is too bent! ;)

I think the 19th is a bit too optimistic though!
