As said in the other thread, if you're 18 then you may have problems - most specialist insurers only deal with 19+

Even then, expect a rather large premium. Whats your postcode area, NCB, will this be your main everyday car?

da16 1 year ncb and yeah it will be my everyday car

DA16 is F-rated! Thats almost the worst you can get.... soooo expect it to be expensive!

How much do you pay to insure the car at the moment?

If you're going to lie about the engine size, why bother even getting a policy? As it won't be worth the paper its written on.

Incidentally, I had a letter from DVLA today, with my V5 back. B'stards want an engineers report, and haven't updated the V5.

Dude, i'm having trouble reading the text type with no punctuation. (stu will kick your **** for text type, it's not accepted on here).

Whichever way you do it, you need to notify the dvla/your insurance company of ANY changes to your car.

i was hoping i could just change it to 1.4 on the log book then when i go to insure it online i will put in the registration and it will come up as a 1.4? im getting the impression that its not that easy. can some one tell me exactly what i need to do and how long it will take and roughly how much its going to cost.

Once you have changed the information with the DVLA, it should appear on insurers websites as a 1.4. You will probably need proof for the DVLA that the engine has indeed been swapped, via an engineers report from a garage of some description. Cost will be varied on how much the garage want for a report, but it wont be much.

Insurance will be expensive as it has had an engine conversion, but again, how expensive is varied.

Long and short of it, if you dont tell the DVLA its got a bigger engine, your liable for tax fraud as youll be in a lower bracket with the smaller engine. If you dont tell your insurers, you will be uninsured anyway, and getting caught will carry the same penalties.

Its a pain in the ass I know, but not keeping yourself legal in these areas is irresponsible as your putting other people at risk.

Most insurance companies will not touch a car with an engine conversion,On the web sites the reg wont bring the car up unless you go with adrian flux or etc, thats what i found any way.

Jack

Car will only come up automatically if both the insurance company and DVLA have updated their records. However, even then you must still inform the insurance company its had an engine conversion, as it didn't leave the factory with that size of engine (ergo: modified). Most assessors are lazy, but some will look for any excuse to get out of paying, and sods law dictates the day yours goes into the shop for an insurance repair is the day the assessor is feeling picky lol

Thats what worries me - the engine is in, but it may not get running for a while. My plan was to get all the paperwork sorted, then MOT it, but at this rate I'll need to get either the MOT tester to check the engine or run it down to Vauxhall and have them verify the engine number. By the time thats all done though it'll probably be October ....2014 lol

Hmm, thinking about it, the letter from the DVLA doesn't say the integrity of the installation needs to be checked, just they need verification of the engine number. Reading it word for word, I could just ask Vauxhall to confirm the engine number is indeed a 2.0 Vauxhall engine without them even seeing the car.... although the chances of that are about as likely as draper giving up stella lol

what does that matter? in the result of an accident are you going to run home, smash your 'spare car' and dump it beside the scene? or are you going to swap the engine back at the side of the road after you wrap it round a lamp post or a donkey?

eh i bought a nova with a 2.0 16v in with th logbook changed to what it should be then when i phoned up my insurance company to get it insured for a week they said it was a 1.2 merit lol... so what does this mean that insurers don't check cars for updates in there V5

Jack
06-04-08, 03:36 PM
Could be the insurance company hasn't updated their records from the DVLA, or was just reading off a car description line... not noticing the engine capacity as 1998cc.

Exactly, and why get FC? either way you claim your screwd.
So you might as well go TPO:roll:

Can someone tell me in laments terms. If i change my engine from a 1.2 to a 2.0, whats the address/number to contact the dvla? And does it cost much?

Cheers,

Adam

Its all detailed on the logbook/dvla website.
It costs nothing to change it

Jack
26-05-08, 02:51 PM
Make the required changes on the logbook, in the sections provided. Note you'll need to provide the exact engine CC and engine number.

Post the updated V5 to:

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BA

Changes can take up to four weeks to return. Bear in mind they will quite likely ask for proof of the engine swap too, so you may need to take the car to a garage and have them write a note (on headed paper) to confirm the changes.
