im currently buildin a nova with a 1.4sr engine with a ast3 kent cam, weber 32/34 carb, 4 branch an full line without cat (janspeed), polished, skimmed and port matched head with standard 1.4sr inlet manifold. aint had this engine running yet an cud be a couple o months yet before i have the engine in the car. will i get any more benifits from fitting r1 carbs? and how do i go about making a manifold, has any 1 got specs 4 making a manifold? any help will be welcome. long live da nova.

verniers are the same as far as i know mate

R1 carbs will give you some gain but the chokes are massive for a 1.4 and your probably won;t make any power in the low revs as they can't be choked down at all,

got a set of genuine weber dcoe's in my for sale thread though ;)

i would change the 1400sr head for a 1.4sri head, as they are the best heads to use for a 1400 IMO. Seeing as the carbs will need a custom inlet anyway. Consider the r6 carbs too if they are smaller? R1's would be a bit overkill IMO

R1's as said will be overkill. MY bro's just fitting a set to his 2.1 pinto.

Look for CBR600 or R6 carbs. Manifold isn't too hard to make, you need a and 4mm plate cut the ports out and holes for studs, weld on 4 tubes and use samco hosing to mount the carbs. I made one at uni for a 1600 8v. You need to either respace the carbs to match the port spacing or angle the tubes tot eh carb spacing.

depends on your planned use. R1 carbs are fine on a 1400 race engine [again, don't bother with the sr head, get a 14SE head] so should be fine for track days.
Otherwise GSXR carbs come in many sizes and are readily available on eBay.

I'd say go for it.

HTH :)

I agree with Derek, go for it.
Pm me, if you want some pics of a manifold.

you gunna have to keep us up to date with this. im thinking of doing the same once i can find a decent 1400 sr shell and engine

i eventually wanna run a 1.6 16v corsa b, will the same inlet manifold fit?

Stop txt typing.

No the same inlet wont fit as a 16v head has different ports and stud locations. I had a full bike carb setup for a 1600 16v, but sold it all recently...
R6 and R1's are just the different models of Yamaha bike's.

R1 carbs are WAYYYY too big for anything under 1600cc imo.

R1= 1000cc, R6=600cc. 600's normally run between 34-38mm carbs, easily big enough for a 1400 car engine. R1's are about 40/42mm, way to big.

A set of Weber or dellorto T40's tend to need 32/34mm chokes fitting to them to get the right balance of flow and mixture on a 1400.

And sizing of carbs is especially important, seeing as the air speed is required to fuel the engine.....

r6 carbs it is then, can anyone tell me what year of r6 it is that i need the carbs from?

Would be interested in your thinking on this Adam.

My experience is that in the low to mid range rpm, the R1 carbs are very good on my 1400 8v, on my not so professional manifold, the top end is really good.
The correct jetting and needles help.

theres a huge thread on migweb for bike carbs and as I found out when I was considering r1's for my 1600 8v, they're too big, r6s have the ideal jet sizes, obviously they would benefit from a rolling road setup but should be fine to get you running.

So you fitted R1'S, using the std jets?, and are surprised they didn't work, you then concluded that they're too big, did you change the jets?

R6 carbs have the ideal jets, hmm, did you do any tuning, other than actually fit the carbs??

No I never actually fitted them, it wasn't till after I bought them that I was told they wouldnt be right, had trouble sourcing r6 carbs so left it on injection.
