And where better to ask than PNG.

Is there any chance any of you guys who do track days and racing as a hobby could maybe shed a few figures on how much you'd be spending to keep up such a hobby. I don't really have a hobby and I'm very much considering getting into it and with a mate have been looking at a few bangers which might scrub up into decent track cars.

Is it a really expensive thing to do? Do you personally think it's worth it?

Any advice or ideas welcome!

Cost is very much down to you - you could take a standard car on track if you really wanted to.

Is it better then to have a track car which is road legal too? Assuming having only one car would reduce the cost. But if you were to modify it, the insurace would be silly money right? In which case you'd want to be around 23-25 before you see the premiums drop considerablly. And it is therefore a waiting game... Oh joy.

imho a well sorted chassis and a 1.6 8v engine in a nova will see you good for a long time, and be cheap to insure/maintain.

also consider 205/106's for track use too.... awesome out of the box.

Yup, small pugs are great.

Having a track car doesn't have to be expensive, bear in mind you don't need to tax/insure/MOT it if its track use only (although if thats the case you WILL need to trailer it to a track). If you were going down the modified route, having a track only car as well as a daily drive would probably be the better option as you can mod one to suit the track (e.g. strip it right out), then for everyday use the other car, with nice full interior it'd be "comfy" to pootle round in.
