Am I right in thinking a 1.6 rad is bigger than a standard one? If so do they mount the same? Anyone got the sizes?

Also Im looking a uprated fans - is it better to have two small ones (http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/COOLING-Electric-Fans-Tripac/c20_268_514/p6092/RADIATOR-FAN-PUSH/PULL-6.5INCH/product_info.html)or one big one (http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/COOLING-Electric-Fans-Davies-Craig/c20_268_269/p1393/RADIATOR-FAN-PUSH/PULL-14/product_info.html)?

Cheers!

Yes IIRC the 1600 radiators are larger. Not sure about fans, I'd hazard a guess at two smaller fans cover more area along the length of the radiator than one larger one in the middle.

Was looking into this myself. Considering getting one of those alloy rads off eBay but they list one size for all Nova's so I was going to find out the size.

got a link to the ones on eBay. I've got a proper aluminium cored racing rad and you would be surprised how well it works compared to the std one. If you look in Demon Tweeks it lists the air flow of the fans. iirc a large fan is better than 2 small ones, draws less current and it cheper.

Could be a dumb question, but what is a standard rad made from?

You got a link to that page on 'tweeks, gary?

Could argue that if you have two and one gets smashed (somehow) then you've still got one;)

page 254 in the 2007 tweeks red catologue :)

ahh but what if both fans get smashed?!?! could go on for hours lol.
Most motor manufacturers only use one fan and they warranty for 3-5 years so it must be an acceptable way to do things lol

if you have a crash badd enough to wreck your front panel and smash the fans then your car won;t be mush use to you anyway lol

lol true, very true.

Looking at that tho, I could have 2 7" fans drawing only 5amps and 816CFM

Yep, the gsi fan is bigger, to match the larger radiator.

this is what a proper alloy rad looks like, fits in the normal position but cools loads better.

yeah you could, you just chang the earth and live wires round and the fan should run 'backwards'

edit - but why ???

Nice rad Gary :wisewood: Want to sell it?

Yes Ash, that one in the link. Only problem is they look a bit cheap though with the plastic ends, not a 'propper' one like above.

I dont want to sell it, but I can get a replica made quite easily. I could probably do one for about ?200. PM me for more info.

You need to get a push fan rather than running a std one in reverse as it wont be as efficient and you risk overheating should you need the fan on

GTE/GSi rads are deeper than the std rads which have a pair of stilts on the bottom to take up the extra depth.

I had a (serck) pattern GSi rad which pretty crap & quite a thin core. The new one I've bought (valeo) is much thicker & has an alloy core with plastic end tanks. Far nicer. Expect to pay ?75 for a decent rad or ?50 for a crappy pattern GSi rad.
