any way round getting a new head or removing it
no i did'nt do it any help guys need it sorted asap

meritlover

heli-coil is the only way. but this will make swarf in cylinder so the head 'should' be removed. but if you cover the tap in grease you might catch most of it without it falling in. its only aluminium so it should just blow out after a few seconds.

it really isnt a big job to remove the head. nor is a new gasket+bolts expensive.

you "could" try the thread restorers that the likes of halfords sell, it might fix it if you are lucky.
Is it your car, and will it be kept long? If neither is true then bang a plug in there nice and tight and hope :D I did that with my old 1.2 that I didnt care about, it ran for about 2 more years like that lol

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:39 PM
better to do the job properly than to do it the Stuart way.

you have a local engineers shop that could do this for a few pounds. this will save you the price of the kit and only pay for the insert and nice mans time.

buy a new set of plugs the loctite the dodgy one in lol. by the time it needs a new set of plugs again you will be able to afford to put a bigger engine in

it's my baby silky that i'll still be driving when im 60 i dont mind changing the head it's just finding an seh i knew it was gone but i hoped it would last a bit longer as i changed the fuel pump for 20xe and the plugs got soaked so i took them out and now it's only just gripping and i need the car for sunday

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 02:43 PM
what sort of loctite would you sugest never use loctite

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:43 PM
oh dear. you must be more carefull to install plugs.

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 02:47 PM
i bought it like it i noticed when i put new plugs in but like i said i hoped it would last a bit longer as the plan was to find an seh head and have it ported/polished

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:49 PM
loctiting a plug in sounds like glueing in a piston ring. its just not right. please find a heli-coil set and do the job the way a nova deserves.

please.

if its only short term

Try a suitable tap first, you might find the thread clears up fine. Had a similar issue on a lambda sensor boss on a friends car but we managed to clear the thread up with an M18x1.5mm tap.

Definately a head off job.

15-02-08, 02:54 PM
i will be doing it properly but just need something to last untill after sunday
i would'nt bodge it on my baby prmanantly

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:55 PM
use a hammer and peen it in bud

give the plug a few wraps of electrical tape. that might jst hold it in the threads tight enough (iam rolling my eyes like this  )

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 02:55 PM
any idea the size tap to try as it seems to be making more damage to the plug than the head

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:57 PM
have you tried another plug then?

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 02:58 PM
yes it just rips the thread off the plug

meritlover
15-02-08, 02:59 PM
oh dear oh dear. try and file a flat on an old plug, use this to chase the thread.
sounds like you should try a nice tap first and put it in nice and square to make the thread sweet like an apple.

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 03:02 PM
i'll go see if i can find a tap local any idea what size tap to use as dont want to make it worse

be carefull with your tap. i d not want you to turn the head into scrap. treat it like a beautiful woman and screw it in nicely without making a mess.

15-02-08, 03:09 PM
you cant give a woman a good screwing without making a complete and utter mess meritlover!

stop biting pillows and get some poon tang!

Welsh Dan

Measure the outer diameter of a new plug, and the gap between the threads with a vernier caliper.

yes but you can keep the hole clean by shooting muck in her face. this leaves the hole clean for the next person/animal

Not much help in fixing the problem but some advice to prevent it

Get some hold hose pipe and push the top of the spark plug up inside, then line the spark plug up with the head and use the hose pipe to screw the spark plug in. If it's in crose threaded the hose pipe will slip thus telling you your are about to damage the thread so you can avoid doing so.

Very good tip for a 16v, deep head/\

On a 8v the plugs are easily accessible, so no probs.

what is wrong with using a long extension bar without a ratchet. anyone that feels the need to start a plug thread with a ratchet deserves a ruined thread. you will feel by your fingers if it is not right.

Adam
15-02-08, 04:30 PM
Whats wrong is the spark plug falls straight out of the socket when trying lower it to the head lol

meritlover
15-02-08, 04:32 PM
thats what the rubber bung in the socket is for Mr Adam Sir

Stoo
15-02-08, 04:32 PM
thats why u use spark plug sockets with a rubber grommet in them to hold the plug

I lost mine :(

So have to resort to the hose pipe method :D

right the thread is funked but i managed to repair enough of it temp
to get a plug to grip using m14tap and electrical tape now running again
but now my fuel pump just packed in typical so im back on 1.4 fuel pump and a slow motor

burgo
15-02-08, 05:12 PM
you used electrical tape!!! surely that will melt and the plug will come out lol

just vaux trev
15-02-08, 05:14 PM
it should do the trick i havent got to go far and the car is'nt being used
only on sunday there is only tape on the top end of the thread anyway as thought the same and didn't want it melting into the head

Nick

the white tape that plumbers use would have been a better bet than electrical tape! at least with the plumbers stuff it can withstand a bit of warmth lol

lj
15-02-08, 06:12 PM
what a read!

electrical tape? omg!

did you try using another spark plug froma another make of car? and don't mean to be rude but it would of been easy to pick another head up and swap them.... think i had head off nova in about an hour!

hope it worksout for ya and the plastic tape or metal from the thread don't ruin your engine!

dan23
16-02-08, 09:56 PM
try cutting a slot in the thread of an old spark plug with grinder using cutting disc .

then for each turn of the thread go back half a turn this will clean up the thread in the head

if it doesnt go in use tape on it to start it

just vaux trev
16-02-08, 10:01 PM
give the plug a few wraps of electrical tape. that might jst hold it in the threads tight enough (iam rolling my eyes like this  )

omfg, yes it works fine even with the engine running upto temp thanks:thumb:
