fuel pump probs

after running my 2.0 8valve for a few months i thought it was about time i got ****d and put my astra gsi fuel pump on so did it today
since i fitted it it has cut out 3 times and now smokes the fuel pump gets very loud (high pitched squeel) after leaving it tick over for about 2 mins
and the car is giving off grey smoke i think iv'e sorted the cutting out but
could this be due to it over fueling and the pump squeel from not being able to push the fuel through (getting backed up) any ideas the fuel pump was fine on my astra but has been sitting not been used for about 4/5 months

The tank has a return line, so any excess goes straight back to the tank and not back up the pump feed line....

On spi tanks, the astra pumps can sometimes rub the bottom of the tank, making them noisy/stop working...
But i had no problems with mine at all, i did use a brand new thick rubber pump gasket tho, which would make the pump sit higher up if you get me.
