Fantastic mate, I love these!!

Yep it cost alot, but thinking of it as investment. Put it this way i sold my mint Evo VI to buy it, ive bought the shell and a few bits and i have no change. Problem was the evo was costing and losing so much money, this is going up in value just sitting in my unit!
It was shipped from California so no problems with rust, amazing as its 48 years old!
As far as the engine goes, ive fitted a rebuilt standard engine for now but have bought a brand new engine which i am going to strip and build up to a fairly modded version. Sticking with the nova theme of twin carbs.
So far i have fitted the engine, gearbox, staright axle kit, brand new wiring loom, full seal kit, switches etc etc. Next going to tackle the front beam, going for a 4 inch narrowed beam with dropped spindles.
Its like starting again, having to learn everything about them but they are so simple!
awesome how much was it? if you dont mind me asking:thumb:
Thats so awesome!!!Defo an investment!!

By concours what style are you meaning? Standard or modded? What about colour? is it staying red black?

Going to be visualy fairly standard, thinking maybe original dove blue as iam not really feeling the colour at the mo. Already found the guy i want to do the interior, called interior motive, look him up on the net as he does amazing work.
Going to be along the lines of the nova, standard looking and simple but everything done to the best possible standard.
Going to take along time so want to enjoy it for a year before i start to go mad on it.

maybe one day eh,
looks stunning keep it oe and will just increase in value split screen as well
soooooo jelous
keep us updated
Excellent project Karl. I think VW campers are liked by pretty much everyone. Good luck.
Love these things, but as hs been mentioned, even rusty heaps fetch up to 5 figures! Madness!!!! At least its not dead money as you say.
Given any thought to a watercooled injection engine, namely a scooby lump? :) Alternatively, theres the older air cooled porsche 911 lump that slots in iirc.

Im sure your right, my nextdoor neighbour/work mate had one and wanted put a scooby lump and he also mentioned the porsche engine and iirc they wheelie coz of the extra power and the fact that the engine is sat behind the backwheels. Mind you, you wouldnt want that on a road car!
A couple of years back when I was working in Slough, Im sure I saw/heard a vdub transporter go past that had a scooby lump in.
Oh and ace project! It does look good and would look alot better in blue:thumb: maybe some white wall tyres too?

soooooooo jealous
a friend of mine used to own a camper like that (not a split screen though). the handling on it was pure comedy, go around a roundabout and pans would fly out of the cupboards in the back it had so much body roll lol
nice investment though, the prices for them have soared in the past couple of years, the prices of mint ones is just ridiculus...........(i'll never be able to afford one!)
have you thought as far ahead as wheels for it? to me, they make or break a camper. (i like a nice polished porsche rim :thumb: )
and suspension?......narrowed beam = low coilovers or air bags??
Absolutely love this Karl!
(off topic, wasn't there a vid floating around of a van owning everything at the ring? iirc that had a porsche lump)
Theres some videos on youtube of Campers and Caravelles fitted with various porsche engines. I think one of them has a 911 turbo.. it's fast ! The guy is in a full race suit... but yet he's sitting in a camper van. Comical
Split screen for the win! I will own one of these one day. Thought about making a 'kit form' one as most of the panels are still avaliable, just buy 'em as I go :)
My fav was the camper that passed a GT3 and an aston at Spa iirc.
****ing love it karl , my misses wants a split screen at the min lol
^^^do you need a better excuse to get one!!

Thanks for the comments guys.
Will one day be hopefully up there with the best, just going to take along time as its all about money.
Progress made so far with pics to follow includes a complete brand new wiring 12v loom with the addition of hazard lights, split charge system so i can run a flatscreen tv etc in the back (going for all the comforts) Straight axle kit on the rear to do away with the reduction box's and get the back sitting lower, also means the gearbox i have fitted will allow me to sit a 70/80mph on the motorway instead of 55! Rebuilt 1.6 standard engine with all new tinware. Had the od bit powdercoated aswell in the engine bay but not going too crazy at the mo. Full seal kit and glass, all cables renewed, lights etc. Stripping the underneath and giving it a good rust proofing to keep it all nice and rust free for the future.
About to tackle the front end with a 4 inch narrowed adjustable beam with dropped spindles to bring it down and inline with the drop on the rear. Also fitting a dual circuit brake system and upgrading to disc brakes.
As for the new engine i have, again its a standard vw engine but going to take it out to 2.1, twin IDF's etc etc. Sticking with a vw engine as i am not really into the scooby engine, or cutting the shell to get an engine to fit.
Wheels for now will be left as steels and chrome trims but with the additon of smart car tyres on the front again to get the front down and stop any catching issues. Maybe go for a set of BRM's later in the year.
Lots of plans for the old girl, one step at a time though...
Jamie Olivers went for over ?30 000 i think, wasnt really worth that much if you ask me as when up close it wasnt finished perfect, made its price because it was his.
Mine is an 11 window microbus, they vary in price so much with the most expensive being a 23 window barn door from the early 50's. Had to do alot of research and learning when looking for one, but i think ive got a good one. Drove 800 miles in 2 days when i was looking for one and people are asking figures like ?6000 for rotten ones! A shell that you would normally give up on if say it was a barn door could fetch ?9000/10000!
As for Splits on track, mine will be making the trip to the ring this year and yes its going on track, all be it stopping half way for a cuppa lol
