Going to be painting my gsi in a couple of weeks. In 2 frames of mind what i should do with the engine bay. Its been stitch welded, so really needing that tidyied up one way or another.
I would really like to smooth everything off, but would this be prone to cracking over time? Dont really want to grind any of the welds down incase it weakens them.
Or should i just put seam sealer on then paint over the top?
Any pics of what you have done wold be great :thumb:

my atempt
Clean seam seal and paint.
If done 100% right, a smoothed bay shouldn't crack.
Take a look at Benn's bay on Mig.
I'd just go for the seam sealer and paint, keep it looking factory-ish.
seam sealer and paint imo. or if you want a nice uniform finish i used a shutz gun and then painted over the top of that
Smoothed seams can look factory if done well I reckon!
IMO if you keep filler level to a minimum, it shouldn't crack.
My attempt (not perfect, but hey, im 16!):

16? shouldn't you be out drinking cider and mugging old ladies?
10/10 for effort :thumb:
Personally, id just go all out on the engine :thumb: afterall, engines are easily selable when they look like this.....

Must of taking you a good while to get it like that, what kind of paint you use?
Oooh yes, stands me at a good few hours work that!!
Manifold is 2 pack heat res paint, the silver is a combination of paint systems :thumb: Believe it or not, the hardest part was tracking down a airbox lid that wasnt scratched lol I had one of Riggy, nothing wrong with it, just some minor scratchs, so i opted for a minter item :D

Just don't go dropping it now :p
Looks really nice Mike, mucho effort gone into that!
For the bay, I was tempted to get mine all smoothed over, but then you never know whats going on underneath. Personally, nice tidy welds (will take an age but maybe get a dremmel or similar-air tools are king) look lovely.

Aye, mucho effort lol and **** knows how much moneys worth of electric from various power tools lol lol
As for dropping it, the engines going in as a short block & box, then being built up in the bay. Failing that, it'll be assembled in the mighty "shed of impending doom" :D

Now thats what I call smoothed.
Iirc Joffs is also smoothed.
I originally had my bay smoothed but as the filler has to go on wet it started to rot the metal underneath. After i'd chipped all the filler off I ended up fitting new inner wings and then just had them seam sealed and painted.
Not worth the hassle as you can't see whats going on underneath.

when i stitched and plated my engine bay i primed it first with zinc primer, then seam sealed it with upol grey stripe seam sealer, then gave it a second coat of primer then painted it with 2 pack paint.should be very durable and looks original looking aswell
As above, I clean and prime welds before anything else happens.

filler wil not rot metal.
Trapped moisture will though, and it doesn't help that you can't see the seams.
smoth bay FTW
