View Full Version : More door loon

After weeks of looking for a 2 door i found this little beast really close to me, so i bought it
I didnt really want a 4 door at first, but i see potential in this :D

Just passed 60k miles, 1 owner, 1.2 Merit. I payed ?500 for it, is that reasonable?

Apart from a small area of rust on the arch and a bit of bubbly (technical term lol ) around the petrol cap its in pretty good condition, the inside is like it just left the factory :thumb:

I have a few plans for it, i want it looking like a classy/old skool cool, black and chrome/mirror polished beast.
Im not going to put a big engine in it, im saving that for my golf and polo, so im thinking 1.4 SR on bike carbs

Only took these pics when i went to view it, i`m going to really get to work on it at the weekend with a wash/clay bar/polish etc then take some better pics

Being a complete noob to Nova`s (well Vauxhall in general) i`ll be needing mucho help, hope youre all kind like that :D

First thing, is there anywhere apart from the obvious that i should check for rot?

i would check the whole car for rot but from the pics she looks a minter, cant wait to see what u decide to do

Unfortunatly, the rot gets everywhere.

The main places to look for are really... Chassis Legs, Boot floor, Battery tray, inner arches, arches, sills, front panel upper and lower and rear panel !

But that looks pretty good from here... :)

It depends what you want to use it for....but i'd

Coilover it on some subtle wheels
ATE 16v/v6 brake setup on the front with some 1144's
Polybush / Strutbrace
Snowplow front bumper
1600 8v on 40's.

Cheers dude

First thing is coilovers :thumb: cant stand cars on stilts :tard:

And ive got these wheels i`m going to refurb, with colour coded centres and polished lip :) 6x14 ET 38 (i think) originally off a mk2 golf GTI 16v
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/6091/pict15741sa7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I might put my steffans on for a laugh for a bit lol 8x14 ET 15  :D

Cool, nice saloon you've got there, either a 1.4/1.6 on webers or bike carbs would be cool.

Not sure what wheels would suit a 4dr though, speedlines might be an option.

Nice to see a more door being done.

That golf is rather tasty though. Mk2 was always my least favourite Golf until I saw them with the skinny bumper on, now they're really growing on me - if I'd seen them in that light when I was in the market for a Nova I'd have ditched the Nova plan and got either a 3dr mk2 golf or, preferably, a Jetta.

Cheers for the comments on the beige hustler, sadly doesnt look like that now. Its sat in my garage in bits awaiting me to put my ass in resto gear  :)
The wheels (alloys) are 13x7 Atiwe`s

I got the coilies on the loon, front looks quite good, on the last thread, could be lower :tard: but the back has only dropped about 20mm  i must of took them off, put them back on again about 5 times, i just cant figure out how to get it lower   hopefully i`m just having a blonde moment??? cause i`m not impressed at all. And yes ive adjusted the rings :p

I did take some pics, but my laptop isnt accepting pics from my camera for some reason :tard: hopefully get them on tomorrow

Coilies are TA technix (cheapo ones :D )

Why not bring the front up a wee bit to make it even out?

walshc
25-02-08, 11:20 PM
Because im stubern and want to get the rear the same lowness (a word :p ) as the fronts, if not lower so i can then take the helper springs out of the front and get that even lower

Jay
25-02-08, 11:44 PM
Have u just got fully adjustable fronts and not rears?

walshc
26-02-08, 12:27 AM
No, theyre both adjustable, but the rears dont adjust low enough
Theyre not like normal coilovers (well for other cars) on the rear, you have the shock and then seperate spring like standard, but then you have these adjuster rings (circled in green) that sit inbetween the spring and car

*edit to actually add the pic - ooops!*
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/1967/circledue6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I`m running just the spring now, i`m going to get lower springs i think seeing as i have the uprated shocks  , anyone know of the lowest springs on the market?

Looks tidy mate, what is the ride like with these coilovers? dose it handle any good? my solution to the rear ride height would be to get the angle grinder out and chop the rear springs, it's free and you can do it a bit at a time to lower as much as you want hey, are you gonna tint the windows? i reckon it'd look 100% better with limo tints all round, anyway good luck with the rest of the build. ps. what you gonna do engine wise?

walshc
05-03-08, 10:22 PM

The ride is stiff, but i like that (ooh errr :D )
Hahaha i might resort to cuting springs, pikeytech styleee, but i`ll probs just end up buying really short springs from that link up there
Im not really a fan of tints TBH
Engine wise :D 1.6 8v on twin 40 DCOE`s if all goes well

That won't be legal. I did think about having a 4dr and tinting the rears, but then realised it'd look.... well, sh!t tbh.

DW-Nova
08-03-08, 12:29 PM
No it obviously wont be legal no, it's personal choice really so its a bit of a stupid thing to say it looks s**t i agree with staying away from the 2.0xe a 1.6 would be good or even a 1.4, i'd try and hide as many things in the bay as possible, wires bottles hoses etc etc.

More lowerage happend today
Cut about 15mm more of the rear springs
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/814/16032008016lg9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Which then brought the back end LOWER than the front - get in :D
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/6389/16032008017nl2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Finally had the excuse to whip the helper springs out of the fronts :thumb:
So, off came the fronts (looking rather dirty)
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7012/16032008018ae4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Slowly lol
Nah, its not THAT bad really, doesnt catch much - im not impressed with that, ive grown an obsession for scraping the belly on my cars over bumps in the last few years hahahaah

Im in two minds with the interior, leave it (i quite like it)
Or fit them old skool bucket seats in, the ones with no headrests
Then retrim in black vynal with white stiching/piping

The white stiching/piping will only happen if i decide to go down the route of another plan in my head.... black with white and polished/chrome detailing theme

And to think i only bought this as a bit of a run around/short term project whilst i restored my Golf lol - damn modding bug  :D

Battle of the lowest ;) :D whats yours lowered on? how much?

I got the tracking done when i first fitted the coilies, but it was pulling to the left  so was going to get a 4 wheel alignment done
But after taking them off again today and refitting them, i made sure the camber was spot on, and its sorted - whoop!
Going to get the tracking done again though as there is a tiny bit of play

I cant remember the full size, but the profile is 80  lol lol proper baloons
I might put my golf steelies on untill i finish my wheels, the profile on them is only 60 iirc, and theyre black so will look a little better....

Havnt checked back on this for a few days but fair play you've made loads of progress, so what engine is going in? you gonna bother painting the bay whilst it's out? Look forward to seeing the next update.

As Steve says, its a 1.6 16v (c16xe)
No not going to bother painting it yet (i have future plans ;) :D :thumb: ) just going to give it a good clean

Well, i went to bleed the brakes today ready to tow it up to Carl`s (riggy) garage so we can do some automobile heart surgery
But as per usual, the basta*d bleed nipples were stuck/welded shut
First off i rounded the head :tard: then i hammered a smaller socket onto it and the damn head snapped off - grrrrrrrrrr!
Theres not enough left poking out to use a stud extracer on it :( so im going to take a dremel to the caliper tomorrow around whats left of the nipple so i can get it out :thumb: i did try using a file but there wasnt much room to work with :(

Pic of the stupid nipple

Just need to bleed them a slightly pikey way and get it up to Carl`s asap, then get the braided ones on and use my mates bleeding kit to do it properly :thumb:

Been having a bit of a nightmare trying to get the engine in the bay
At first we couldnt get the car high enough to push the engine underneath, so we tried to put it in from the top lol obviously didnt want to go in that way, so took the inlet off - still caught, took the rad fan off - still caught grrrrrr, took the pulley and engine mounts off while we dropped it in, still wouldnt go in - grrrrrrr
So had a bit of head scratch, then Carl (riggy) let us in with a little secret lol so we dropped the engine and tied the hoist straps to the tie rods and used the hoist to lift the car, then used some old steelies to keep the car in the air while we squeezed the engine underneath  nice one Carlos :thumb:

Pics when you get them sorted. :)

Small blocks arent usually tricky. Its just a case of doing it once & seeing it done & knowing whats required next time. Atleast you know!

I always use an engine hoist but never to lift the engine......

The finish isn too bad really, considering i did it on the road in the wind, with rattle cans.

Im waiting for some nato green to come (ordered it 4 weeks ago off ebizzle) then im going to spray my roof, bumpers and lips of wheels in it.

get that front end lower

walshc
07-06-08, 08:48 AM
Hahaha i wish i could, beleive me, but i cant untill i get a custom exhaust
The down pipe and middle silencer catch everything :( cant be bothered with road side - quickly bodge the zorst up with metal wire because the mounts have shered off - repairs :wtf:

I think i`ll just raise the rear a little to even it out a bit untill i can lower the front some more :thumb:

Painted the roof and wheel dishes thingies nato green today
Paint was absolute sh*te  no preasure in the aerosol cans, nozzles were shagged, what a joke, esp after waiting over a month for it :(
Persivered with it though and the overall outcome isnt so bad, the look is what id imagined and wanted, but the finish on the roof is a little poor, drips everywhere :tard: going to get some more and brush it on
