Righto, seen as we're making the switch soon at work from Unixware 714 to RHEL, I had a bit of a play with the latter today and its reignited my old desire (if you can call it that) to ditch XP at home in favour of Linux.

I'm thinking either Ubuntu or Fedora; the latter as its pretty much a home version of RHEL so I'll be familiar with it (as I'll be using it every day at work), although people seem to rate Ubuntu quite highly in terms of user friendliness. BEARING IN MIND I'll also probably be upgrading my dad's PC as well, and he's a complete tool when it comes to computers.

Has anyone used either of those flavours, any thoughts? Pros/cons? Are there sizeable differences between the two or are they just marginally different here and there? Any other Linux distributions I should consider?

I use Gentoo, I think it has a GUI installer now so should be as easy as Ubuntu to install? It's a little more of a DIY-style distro though (although I'm sure you know what you're doing when it comes to CLI) and the Portage package manager is fantastic.

When I've seen/used Ubuntu I've been very impressed with it though.

If you're looking at something your dad can use with little computer knowledge you really need to pick a suitable desktop environment; KDE or Gnome should be okay, or XFCE for a more lightweight desktop.

You'll have to if you do anything with WRAM in the near future, but I don't think Chinooks will be on there for a while

I am also thinking about installing Linux on my spare machine. I haven't looked in to it much but I think I will just install Ubuntu and see how I get on.

I put a graphical version of Ubuntu on my pc before converting to a server edition.

Its fairly fool proof. plus with shed loads of online support for it even if he does go wrong he can get the help to remedy it in minutes.

Openoffice for all your word/excel needs (infact its better lol)
