View Full Version : Are Vauxhall out of touch with young drivers?
The other day I went to my local vauxhall to get some rear headrest guides for my Nova. Whilst there, I was after some parts for the engine, but the guy needed my engine number. So out he came to get my engine number and noticed I had the grey and red SR interior. He said to me "Oh, we've just thrown out an interior like that" I couldn't believe what I just heard, I asked if they had any more and he said no. He then said "We've just thrown out ?20,000 of Nova parts to make space". I was in shock to say the least.
The guy said that there was no demand for Nova parts anymore. People wern't buying the parts and with new cars coming out they needed the room. I can understand the latter part of what he said, but "people aren't buying Nova parts anymore"??? I could have told him of all the Nova communities out there, but I'd have been wasting my breath.
Ever since Vauxhall introduced the Corsa, I have never really thought "thats the car I want". In my opinion when Vauxhall were designing the Corsa, they we're probably designing it to taget the housewife rather than the young driver. Don't get me wrong, theres some nice Corsas out there that have been modded, but I always felt the Corsa was a bit too 'refined and bubbly' in the styling.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think Vauxhall have made the Corsa grab the young drivers attention like the Nova did. So I ask again...Do you think Vauxhall are out of touch with young drivers?
Jim.
P.S. In no way did I intend this message to become a Nova v Corsa slagging match. I had to give MY reasons for asking the question. As I said, I have seen many Corsas that I thought looked pretty good after modding and individual styling, but Im talking about the standard side of the Corsa and whether Vauxhall are designing the small hatchback for the young driver or the housewife/older person in general.

Doubt novas where aimed at the younger drivers really. at a price tag of around ?11,000 for a GSI many a year ago dont think many kids could afford one. They've just become a younger generations car now (well past x years) duely because of the fact there cheap to buy, cheap to fix, cheap to insure, easy. and fun cars to drive. Id say that in 15/20 years time all these new cars (corsas/saxos) will treated like novas but with how cheap cars are these days and how rich kids am there getting classic modding status now, rather then in 15 years time. doubt that they'll still be around that long anyway.
Fair point Dogz. I forgot to take into account how much Nova's were when they were first released. But even now, the Mk1 Corsas are 8-10 years old. Vauxhall will gladly keep a part for a car of that age, but think that Novas are more or less extinct. Perhaps it's just my local Vauxhall dealership.

I doubt if vauxhall did have any demand for nova parts, how many people you know that go to vauxhall to buy spares? not a bloody lot. with the prices they charged. my ex misses works for em and gets 30% discount and i still dont bother.
with regards to the corsas as dogz said the nova wasnt aimed for young people just got adopted by them the same way that the mk1 and mk2 escorts were in the 80's.
It seems a long way off now but in 8-10 years time you will be buying saxo's for ?1-200 the same as you can novas now. they might even be cheaper as the prices of new cars are dropping sooo much.

there not really keeping parts for 10 year old corsas. since most corsa bits for newer cars are the same as older cars (and other models etc), they'll stock parts for cars probably for 10-15 years after they stop making them as thats when they make most money from parts. after that I guess its what ever they've got lying in the warehouse.
A kit if vauxhall bits are the same its just the interior, body panels etc that are different.

The only things I go to Vauxhall for are switches and original stuff like that, as you said, they are too expensive, maybe if they dropped their prices to get rid of stock then peeps would go to them.

wtf is X
In that case are Vauxhall in touch with the younger person if there prices are as high as they are? Why do they charge so much for parts? Is it so they can get a "better class" of customer? Someone with a stable job, mortgage, credit cards, etc? Or is it becasue they think people are limited where to buy parts from and so they put the prices up as high as possible? Even if brand new cars are so cheap at the moment, wheres the justification in charging massive amounts for parts?

Because if your going to vauxhall for parts you must really need that bit, they know that and price accordingly.

also they'll make a load of money from insurance companies. Car goes into bodyshop for insurance claim damage, the bodyshop will buy vauxhall parts as price is no concern (to a point) so vauxhall price high.

It is silly because bodyshops just get pattern parts, they are cutting their own throat as far as old motors go.

can you really see the bin men comming and picking it all up??? dont think so they prob got a removal company in!
yea they wudnt throw it out surely :x
when I say binned it, I don't mean they stuck it out on the street ready for the local dustmen to pick it up :P . I mean they probably took it to a place where Vauxhall take all there damaged/unwanted parts. The worst thing is, the Vauxhall guy said they got rid of it only 2 weeks ago

When nova's first came out. It was the elderly that were driving them, even the sports models.
Obviously when the price started to drop the younger drivers started to buy. The same thing is now happening with corsa's
I went to the vauxhall garage the other day for the lower shelves for a black mk2 dash (GSI), they said that they couldnt get the right one any more as they had stopped selling them.
In the end vauxhall sourced them from Germany. Cheers to vauxhall for that as they also worked out cheaper.
I'm gonna ring my local vauxhall garage and tell them that if they are thinking of throwing owt away to give me a call!

I think I'll do the same!!!!
In the world of Classic Fords (of which I'm also a fan), there are loads of companies that have bought up old stock over the years, and make a living out of selling these "as good as new" parts to enthusiasts.......I'm sure there must be someone somewhere doing the same thing with Vauxhall parts???? I hope so anyway!
If not, then I'm going to!...hum.....new business opportunity mi thinks....ummm ;)
