Hi people, I want to ask the PNG massive about wiring a CD headunit into my '91 Nova Trip.

Its a run of the mill 45wx4 Kenwood headunit, and I want to know if my Nova will need any form of wiring kit to fit it? This website says I don't:

http://www.nexxia.co.uk/Car_Stereo_fitting_kits/vauxhall/nova.htm

But most headunits have, erm, 2 rows of connectors encased in black plastic sort of? And mine has a single row of connectors to plug into? Or is it a matter of cutting and shutting a few wires?

Sorry for the crap explanation, hopefully some people will be able to shed some light! Cheers

Does your plug on your car look like the one on the right of the pic below?

No mate its a single row of small flat connectors in a straight line which look like they make contact the same way that a memory card might?!

Then someone has either already plugged in an adapter, or lopped off the nova connector and fitted an aftermarket one.

Don't think I've ever bothered with wiring adapters, the first thing I always do is lop them off and match up the wires as I see fit with bullet connectors. I prefer to run independent power and earth cabling though rather than use existing car stuff.

Ok cheers for the input Razorjack, I'm happy enough if I know that it can be done without wiring kits etc!

Once I get the CD player I will let you guys know how I got on:thumb:

Easy, just run a suitable cable from the battery to the HU, with a fuse at the battery end. If its only powering a head unit, you should have enough room to trace the wire through where the main car loom goes into the engine bay.

There's a couple of earth points up behind the dash, find the closest one and wire a decent gauge wire from the HU's earth to that point.

Bear in mind the HU will have permanent live, so don't forget to switch it off when you leave the car lol

You can still use the ignition live feed for turning the unit on/off with that method, as the ignition feed just clicks a relay in the unit and the earths are going to the same place really.

The standard earth point can be seen on the bulkhead behind the radio on a mk1, dont know where it is on a mk2 though.
