View Full Version : Banded steels - what size lip?

Stanley
31-01-08, 01:33 PM
If i go through with teh saloon, im going to go for Euro type wheels.

Interested in wide SR/SRi steelies but what size of a lip should i go for? And what size tyres would fit each size of lip?

I can get up to a 5" lip on them.....

Welsh Dan

How wide are they now?

I'd probably go for a 2 or 3 inch lip.

Stanley

I dont know the specs of standard SRi steels tbh.

If anyone has pics, thatd be most helpful....

I have hundereds (literally) of pics of the widened steelies, as I'm getting a set for the old school '85 beast lol I'm at work at the mo so only have the ones in my photobucket... Here is one to get you started, was from the VAG-Opel show in September and apparently this saloon/ sedan is for sale now! Anyways, the wheels are 7J.

Thank you squillions.

Any idea of a tyre size? Im after stretched tyres so im thinking 175/50/14?

mayhem

on a 7j rim a 175-50 stands a little streched. and, more importantly, a 175-50 on a 7j almost doesnt need arch work on the front arches (you UK guys are always so into not doing arch work :P ).

i have 185-50-14 on my 7j borbets (offset 25) and i needed to mod a little in combination with my maximum dropped nose. (3cm ground clearence).

John- Dougie seems to think that the big brakes will fit because of the extra 0.5? Hope he is right :D Ok so there are gon be a lot of Euro style Novas around this year it would seem, does that mean you guys are up for the VAG-Opel meet? :D

I currently have 256's and 14's, the 13's won't fit over (i've tried), so i'm dropping to vented 236's, with tarox discs and mintex pads. It's not as if the car gets used and abused.

Stoo, they're gonna be running 165 60 13 tyres, so yep they'll be stretched!

Lynz, i'd possibly be up for some euro action, funds depending or course.

Going back to the thread, my 13's are 4 and a half inch wide, so i'm adding 2 and a half inches to make them 7.

This is quite a useful thread.

We've got some MT drag slicks for the green nova but they are supposed to be run on 8j rims.

They are 14", I've been told that they will go on 7 inch wide rims but if we were to get some wheels widened we may as well get them done to what we want.

Who are you using to widen your wheels ? and how much

Thanks in advance

I've got a set of 6j 14's in the old sr style with opel centre caps like the white ones on the blue hatch. they came of an old lhd kadett I found in a scrapper back in the nineties. they sit in a shed with 185/60r14s on. anyone interested in them

I'm using a contact through the retro-rides forum. They can also be done (i hope that link works! Obviously not! try typing wide wheels in google.)

Personally i wouldn't use banded rims on a drag car, they have a tendancy to be out of balance, and can leak air if not done right. Plus there's the safety issues too. I'd get the wheels you have re-rimmed or get some weller style rims.:thumb:

well... engine parts are much cheaper in the uk then here in the netherlands.
i'll check if the uk roads are worse then dutch roads, as i'm probadly coming to PV show this year with some other dutch guys (all euro styled)

i wrecked my xe engine (a little to much fukk airride...) and i'm ordering all he new parts in the uk. probadly @ astley's, but i hear that he's really slow on delivery to the netherlands.

the risk of euro styling (my engine...), hit a steel frame of a bridge (the 'kadoenk' when you drive over a bridgelol ) at 130 km/h, so about 80 mp/h i guess?

mayhem

dutch guy, ben.

only 1 thing about streched tyres..!!

how higer the tyre, how weaker the side. so with a high tyre, you can get more streched, byt the wall is weaker than a ' sports size ' tyre like a 195-45-14.

lynz orderd me to come over to the UK for the PV show.. so i guess i have to come :)
