It's unfair to assume the engine thats been sold isn't any good.

Stuart

but on the flipside isnt it a little irresonsable to assume the engine is in spangly perfect condition given the sale price...... If it were tip top I'm sure there would have been a nice high reserve on it.

or is this CP's new engine ;)

It's not CP's new engine. He was going to buy it, but was ?60 short  :p

I just don't think it's good practice to say something is knackered when we don't know what condition the internals are in. For all we know the buyer has got themselves a great engine at a bargain price.

surely if someone was going to buy an engine with that spec they`d strip it down and check things are all good prior to fitting anyway ....

id imagine the additional parts included would still make it a good deal ....

No mention of steel rods !

Thats gone for a good price imo, at the worst if the block is worn out you could rebuild it into another block.

I have no doubt it will work fine as it isbut an engine of that spec would require a freshen up every so often and it doesn't look as if its been apart in a while.

I'd also like to see the engine make 240hp on a good set of rollers.

exactly jonelm
whats a 2nd hand block nowadays?? <?50

yeah rebores/machinging etc may cost a little bit, but hey ho

If its on 87mm pistons then finding a less worn block will be no problem.

The SBD article wasn't exactly written last year so I'm guessing that engine has done the mileage.

I've just got a complete xe block for ?50 which I'm building a turbo engine from for a mate (minus rods and pistons obviously lol)

Hi guys, i personally know the car this engine came out of. and can vouch for it being good. (i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong!!) Like the ad says it's had over 5k chucked at it. The block and head was originally out of andy's nova sport from over 10 years ago. He fitted it to a mk2 cab (standard with bodies), before fitting it in said mk3 for a couple of years, before the re-build. Yes it had been fully re-built, to the spec in the ad, at a guess i'd say middle to late 2003, it can't have done many that many miles since then as i've been told andy has had a ctr for the last 2 or so years, and the astra had been in dry storage for that time. Colin bought it off andy to put in his own rally car, and i'm asuming colin has changed his plans now. I don't think mr novarally would have bought it if it was scrap?
Afaik, colin never puts reserve prices on his auctions either, and he has his reputation to keep up. I reckon he did well!
As already said if the block is scrap, the good internals, head can easily be swopped, that's probably why it fetched as much as it did.
5k (in receipts) engine for 3? Bargain!

Good money that Stoo, luckily the one I found was round the corner which was useful.

Regarding the xe, as I have said already its well worth that money BUT if ended up needing a freshen up in the not so long future it wouldn't be such a problem swapping it all into another block.

Either way if you brake the costs down of what is there for 2nd hand bits it easily exceeds what the overall engine was sold for so someone got a good deal whatever condition it is in.

no jonelm what imeant was i had one up for sale for ?40
noone wanted it!

it had pistons, rods, crank, clutch, fly etc etc
basically a complete bottom end

i bought an engine with worked Coscast head, cams, T45 carbs+manifold etc etc and never used it

paid ?500 for the lot
sold the carbs for ?350
manifold for ?70
head for ?300
and all i head left was the bottom end and all i wanted was ?40 and noone was interested at ll

you could still see the hone marks in the bores!!

Colin is calling himself Hillclimb Escort on e-bay which may explain why it was for sale;) & he is a dyed in the wool trader after all

As regards buying an engine like this on e-bay its simple.

Either
1. You take a chance and with a bit of luck and knowledge you could well get yourself a lot of fun for minimal effort at bargain prices.

Or
2. You take another sort of chance, build something up yourself thats hopefully going to be what you expect but spend twice what no.1 costs.

Or
3. You take no chances at all, get someone like SBD to build you what you want and spend 3+ times what no.1 costs

No 1 could be an astute buy esp if when broken the sum of the parts could be greater than the whole
