c16se gearbox query

just wondering what other gearboxes fit the c16se, looking for something a bit sportier such as a close range or 6 speed, had one in my '78 celica and was so nice to drive

If it's in a GSi it should be an F13 close ratio already, although with a 3.74:1 final drive.

Swapping it for an F13CR with a 3.94:1 FD will raise the revs a little, thats the spec I have in mine and it's very drivable. You could also get hold of a 4.18:1FD out of a wide ratio box and swap it out, though with that set-up you'll be looking at 4000rpm at 70 in fifth.

what gearbox has it got in now?i have a f13cr in my nova and although it does your head in on the motorway its brilliant for b roads etc:D

The "F" code can be found cast into the top of the gearbox, under the selector rod. To find out what internals it has, jack up the front left (maybe remove the wheel for easier access), and give the end of the box a good clean with degreaser/wire brush. The red circle in the pic below is where you'll find the code for the internals.
