Hi

Just wandered if anybody has ever tried these road legal track tyres.

They do them in 195/50/15 and 3 different compounds.
Any feedback would be helpful.

Martin, i've had a set of these before.
IMO they are very good but i've not tried other tyres.
I went for the medium compound, after 20 mins track use they got a bit too hot. So if i was to have them again it would be in hard compound.

iirc Dan has run them...

if they are the same ones he had on, then they felt excellent imho (I stole the car when he wasnt looking lol) and wore well.



well worth considering the hankook RS-2's if they come in that size. Ive had them on the VX for just over 10K and the rears have still got a good 3K left in them before needing to be changed. Plus handle wet and dry excellently

Any reasons why you wont use 888's ?

I'm presuming arch clearance

plus fairly soon 888's will be a whore to get hold of when the racing series get going.

yep i ran these, they were a very good tyre on track and offered some good grip although even in a hard compound they did heat up nicely when pushed to the limit lol I had no scrubbage issues from them and the sidewall strength appeared spot on.

For road use i cannot comment as track was their sole use apart from one outing. I do remember them lasting fairly well considering the 'road legal' bit is as close as you would want it from a new tyre....

Here are a few pics of how the car sat and what i did to my tyres on what i am sure was their first outing with a truly savage day at curburough (sprint track like sandpaper lol ) where i spent most of the morning 'drifting' in the wet and dragging the car where i wanted it (on purpose), then long sessions in the afternoon grinding them into the drying circuit

Car wearing said tyres (only time i used them on the road during summer and they appeared very grippy even on normal roads)

Sandpaper surface trackdays, my favourite !

They get VERY interesting in the wet don't they Dan lol

What class are 888's allowed in now ? I thought it was just Time Attack

888's are alowed in most stuff... the LOTRDC races use them and A048's although they dont run many 15" sizes etc.

PBMW can run 888's from what I remember too.

I can't see it causing too many problems tbh.

A new set of 888's will last ages anyway as long as you stay on nice surface tracks, typically most of the tracktime I have had over the last 4 years was on airfields so I'm more than used to doing a set or tires or more in 1 day !

I would like to try a set of A048's but their a bit pricey, I'm pricing up some 235/45/15 888's for the Escort and I'm thinking that used slicks may be a more sensible option.

yep in the wet i found they were great fun if you are foolish enough to flick the back out and let the diff do the talking :D **excuse to put in action shot lol **

I think the yoko's are a good tyre, but have ermmm 'bulbous' sidewalls????? making them a pig on nova's, i'd try them on any other car. Since i tried a few options the tyres i use now are the rally tarmac inters, handy when some trackdays get funny if you use full slicks but offer a level of grip well above the AO48's etc

Thanks for the responce.
Cant use R888's because of clearance. They say there a 195 but actually there 203mm wide!!
What size wheels is everybody useing 6.5" or 7" wide. They dont look too ballooned on the sidewall that R888 and AO48's do?
Also what compound is everyone using?

I have 6J, 6.5J & 7J wheels that I use. I wouldn't reccomend the 7J's since they are a tight squeeze under the arches. The 6 & 6.5 with R888's fit fine. Although I do have my arches ground right out and I use spacers to get the clearence just right.

My car is old skool unfortunatly before the days of arch rolling.
The rear arches are ground back to the spot welds so there is still a slight lip left. There now is not enough lip to roll so i'am stuck with it and this reduces clearance space i have left.
AO48's and R888 due to this lip just arnt going to fit.

I have a slight lip on mine as well and have no clearence issues. Anyway thats besides the point as such. If you are having clearence issues then I suggest running 6J rims.

It's a pitty your not around my way since you would be more than welcome to pop around and try out the different combinations I have to see what works.

Hi Martin

All the guys run these tyres out at the Ring and they are spot on, i am yet to try them but will be ordering a set soon.

Sounds like you cars going to be better than ever for track this year, any track days planned mate, could do with doing one myself.

Martin the sidewalls as you say are fairly square on the khumo's compared to the opposition. I think i had about an acre between the arch and the tyre when running those lol lol (although my beam was very central) As regards compound i always run a hard compound be it on the track tyres or the pirelli rally inters which i prefer to run now, but then i can be harsh on my tyreslol .

Poor cars had loads of abuse :cry: oh well best carry on the tradition.

Interesting thread this, I was looking at the 888's but as said, nightmare to get hold of. Hankooks are sounding favourite atm. Not having driven on track tyres and going on from what i've heard yoko's tend to be a bit soft/quick wearing (I know my A539's were) and kumho's a bit hard, almost like they have no 'give/feel'
