i have a panansonic cq-dfx501N head unit and the trouble im having is when i set all the tuning and bass settings with the preset function, they never seem to stay. when i tune the radio in and set the preset station and switch off the headunit and switch on again, everything is fine. however, when i turn the ignition off and back on again the damn thing loses all its presets. so basically everytime i start the car i hav to set the stereo which is very annoying!!!! also ive noticed on most other cars that the stereo turns on automatically when the the ignition is turned on. this never happens.....any ideas anyone?....ive read the manual about 100 times and i think i miust be doing it right otherwise it wouldnt be ok wen i turn the unit off....!!! sorry 4 the long post but this is really annoying!!!
any help would be much appreciated.....

From what i can remember there are 2 or 3 power cables coming out the back of a headunit(My sony has three) One of these is for the memory, one of these if for the main power and the third is for the display(if this isn't already powered). From the sounds of it you have it wired in the wrong way. What you want to do is wire the memory wire into the permanent 12v cable that will be lying around somewhere aroung your radio slot(normally brown) and then wire the mainpower cable into the ignition cable(which would seem to be the one that you currently have your memory wire wired into) and also wire your display cable into this(if you have one)

So:

memory wire to permanent 12v
main power(and display if there) to ignition
