1 inch wide strips of flat steel bar?, you need to spread the force on the back of the glass out as much as possible.

Pop the glass backing plate (plastic) out of the ball joint it swivels in. Then peel the backing away from the glass.

Oh & there is a steel ring around the ball joint keeping it in tightly. Remove that 1st.

It's easier if you take the cover off the mirror too (should just prise off).
I could see the ring around the ball joint, but damaged the mirror whilst trying to get to it.
The cav mirror I've got has a complete rigid plastic backing behind the entire mirror, where as the nova one just had a small bit in the centre of the mirror that had the ball on it, no backing for the rest of the reflector. Is that right?

On mk3 cav mirrors that cover is removable, tricky to do but it will come off.
Haven't a clue if it's mk2 cav though.

i removed the glass of my mirror by parking my car as far over to the left as i could on the hard shoulder, with my left wheels on the grass, then a french lorry driver kindly took the mirror off for me and drove off into the night
i shat myself!
