how do you tell the difference of a 1.2 engine and a 1.3sr/1.4sri?? if your looking at them? ive bought another nova log book says 1.2 but a few people have said it feels quicker than my old 1.2 and looks different, anyone know how i will be able to tell just by looking at the engine? cheers ian

engine number? On the flat top of block, under headgasket on gearbox end.

carb'd 1.2's are quicker than SPi.

if its got a red dizzy cap, then its likely to be a 1.4 IGN setup (meaning probalby a 1400 engine)

if its got coolant lines running to the carb would infer its a 1.3/1.4 carb (more people that fit them to 1.2's dont bother plumbing them in)

well the dizzy is black but when you take the ht leads off the end there is a little metal bit on each connection(if your with me) which on ebay says its a 1.3/1.4 any ideas?

a 1.2 will be 12SB or summat & SPi is C12NV IIRC

Obviously a 1400 will be 14S...

can you tell any difference by looking at the top of the engine the metal bit where it says OHC?? cheers again for all the replies

flat top cam belt covers were only indictive to auto belt tensioners.....generally the 1.2 didnt have them at all but not all 1.3/1.4's did either.

the engien number will be the biggest give away. if its not got a 12 in the number then its not a 1.2 lol

ive found a number to the left of the metal cover sayin ohc, it is R90280511
dont know if that helps??

looks like the part number for the cover.

the engine number is next to the exhaust port of cylinder 4 (on the little bit of block that is flat) It probably needs a clean up with WD40 etc.

Post a pic up of the engine.

How many bolts does the airbox have?

Thats a 1.4 rocker cover. If its carbed, looks like its a 14NV engine.

Take the ir filter off, one choke ine the carb = 1.2, two holes = 1.3/1.4 (unless it's pre-'85, in which case a single choke could be a 1.3).

See the bit of the block that sticks out at the bottom right of that pic? (in the red outline). that's where you'll find the engine number and code, will most likely need cleaning up to be able to read it, a flat bladed screwdriver has usually been enough to scrape the dirt off for me (if it's really rusty too, some 80grit or a wire-wheel can be used, but go easy with the paper as it can rub away the stamping).
