View Full Version : mot emissions
how do the class the emissions on a nova turbo, do they do it to the origional car (calibra) and what am i going to do about my custom de-cat exhaust, how the hell would i get a nova sytem with a cat that would fit and do the job?
They just test it to whatever reg / year the car is, most Novas never had a cat anyway so you should be ok.
its k reg, so will need a cat unfortunately
Have to find a friendly MOT'r !! Has it had a 'cat' test (?) done in previous years ??

Not necessarily, my 94 M Range Rover V8 doesn't have cats;)
Cats were phased in over a period. Although a lot did!
Must absolutely be fited from "N" Reg according to my MOT friend.
If it wan't fitted with one origonally you should be OK.
Was it a cat spec car?

Thats because of the way the car runs. The Range's get away with it, cos thats how there made, made to run lean straight from the off.
Other 'conventional cars' have cats in place as refinement of the exhuast gases so they dont have to be so strict on engine running. So K 92 onwards do need a cat. Unless your special and have a range or a suzuki.
well iv owned a k reg nova in the past and that required a cat!
r1ch- i couldnt tell you to be honnest i didnt own the car for its previous m.o.t
just found out the law for a cat is for cars made after 1st august 1992... with a few exceptions! so does anyone have any ideas as to what i can do?

it goes by what ever is the oldest. if the engine was say 1990 and car was 1993 you wouldnt need a cat.

previouse message is right, providing your engine is older then 92 you don't need a cat

Is it a case of "needing a CAT", or "needing to beat xyz emissions" for the test?
No car requires a cat, but all have to pass the emissions test. For cars younger than 08/92, the emissions test is more stringent, hence most engines need a cat to "clean" the exhaust to a suitable level.
In terms of what gets tested, they go by whichever is older, the car or engine. Bear in mind you'd need to find some way to prove to the tester (or DVLA, whoever) that the engine is older than august 1992.
I've spoken to certain MOT testers about treating the car as a custom build or kit car, and I believe the rules are different there so will leave someone else to clarify that...
