View Full Version : advice on spray painting
Had a flick through some of the sticky topics but a few questions:
Got some shock absorbers that are in need of a re-painting before I fit them and stone chips etc have taken some of the paint of and theres surface rust.
Obviously I need to remove the rust first and as some of it is pretty light im hoping I can just grind it back to bare metal, BUT whats the procedure after that? As the paints flaking off I cant just paint over it so do I need etch primer for the bare metal first followed by filler?
Ive done a bit of spraying before so im not a total amateur but i'd rather get it right first.:thumb:
Dont use a grinder to remove rust on a shock FFS!! If you some how manage to peirce one youll fecking know about it lol lol
I'd first wire wheel/brush and sand back the rust as you had planned. Then sand back the rest of the flaking paint, etch primer the bare metal then primer and paint the whole thing. I wouldn't waste time using filler on the shocks tbh.

To be honest any spray paint will come off fairly quickly and powder coating is your best option.
If you want to spray them
take off all the rust, so you might aswell strip all all back to bare metal.
fill if you want to
etch prime
then high build prime
sand
and then get some nice thick coats of paint on there, pref with a spraygun and compressor.
if you want me to go into further detail, just ask
Cheers

My bad, I didnt mean a grinder lol just meant to take it back to bare metal with either a file or a wire brush as my tool supply is pretty limited!
Once its back to bare metal wont I need some filler to smooth it over??
I wouldn't have thought so unless you're particularly rough with removing the rust. SharpeConcepts' idea is good, high build primer should fill any tiny imperfections.

you would be lucky if it holds buddy, to be honest a good coat of Hammerite would be a better option anyway.

Theres a big circle thing that hides your shocks out of site lol its a shock absorber, i wouldnt waste my time "filling out" any imperfections even if it was going onto a show car!!
Ahh well im on a bit of a budget so it will have to be rattle cans, havent got a compressor in the garage.
Cheers peeps, i'll be doing this over the weekend so hopefully my project page will actually have an update!

Dude dont be ashamed if your on a budget, you can only do what you can afford cheif!
Everyone has to start somewhere, and not everyone has the time, money, room etc etc to build a concourse vehicle etc etc
everybodys on a budget!!
just some people have no limits to that budget, and some people do!
Not ashamed, just thought i'd make a point that without a job its going to be mega budget style, i.e im using primer and an old can of jamaica yellow which have been in the garrage for about 2 years! lol
That type of budget lol at the end of the day as long as the rust is gone and it looks better than it does now, thats all Im bothered about.
