gear boxes

on my way home from work today i blew second gear in my box... anyone know whats likely to have happened....

no second gear but have all the others...


its a 1.6 engine and box so what other boxes fit and whats the best to get... would love rally box but haven't got that kinda money to throw at a fun car....

Ideally you want an F13cr with a 4.18 final drive. The FD is rare as rockinghorse poo though.

if 2nd is missing, the selector must be knackered.

basically any of the f13 range will fit. these were fitted in 1.4/1.6 novas astras, corsas & cavs + the later 1.7 diesels
they come in either WR wide ratio (economy) or CR close ratio (sporty)

both will fit. if you can find a f10 from an sr then you can get the 4.18 diff from that.

Handy tip. if you get a replacement box, you can remove the endplate & pull all of the gears & shafts out whilst leaving the casing in place. clean out the casing & fit a new cluster back in. it is all in the haynes book.

4.1's aint that rare, I went looking for a 3.9 last year and there was 5 x 4.1 boxes in the scrap yard and no 3.9's!

Its in the 1.3SR's F10 that you will find the 4.18FD which are generally regarded the best top end/acceleration mix for a smallblock Nova, seen a few go on eBay for about ?50 (bit expensive) :eek:

An F10 wouldn't fit without changing your fly and clutch. Scrappies should have a few F13, look for the gearbox code as one with 'W' indiates a wide ratio.

Other than that I think an F15 will fit.

Nova's only came with F10/F13, F20 is a 2.0l box. I think the F16 might be for big-block too?

1.4 SRi and GTE's / GSi's came with F13's.

I've got one sat in the garage that was removed from a GTE, and one sat in the SR that came with the SRi engine.

No 1.4 nova came with a F13, thats a myth. You can fit them on yes but they never came from the factory like that.

i had a f15 cr on my gsi and it was better than me old f10 i thaught! it was very close 4th in the f15cr was like 3rd in the f10!

the removal of the inners of the gearbox....

simply remove end plate and gear linkage on top and it slides out? easy to do?
