you can also tell if its early or late by the amount of tensioners and followers the are on the cam belt set up !!!
if there is 1 follower and 1 tensioner it s early
and if it has 2 followers and 1 tensioner its late!!

There are 2 basic types of XE in laymans terms...

One has a coil and distributer (5 plug leads)

One has DIS pac (Distributorless ignition system) 4 plug leads

There is also 2 versions of the distributer type (20XE and C20XE)

Look at the engine code

This is a pic of my engine bay, it has a coil it would be the distributer type. The reason im asking is ive been offered a set of webbers, manifold etc for buttons. I want to junk the SFI system and im told that if i have a dizzy then its easier ??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I read on here somewhere that there's a date stamped on the rocker cover, under the oil cap...?

If it has one tensioner and 2 pulleys, its an XEV you plum lol

Earliest engines are 20XE's. Later engines are C20XE's, with a lambda sensor, and a dizzy. Latest engines were Dispack.

Its easier having the dissy (above) if you are going to use a distributer from a 1.6 Cav (cheapo way) otherwise you should use aftermarket management to sort the ignition out in which case you can get it for both dispac and dissy type

So going on whats been said the enginge in the above car would be a 20XE ?? does anybody know how to wire the dizzy when binning SFI ??

The dizzy loom just needs 3 wires connecting.
The above engine is probably a C20xe, albeit an early one.

An Ignition Live, Earth, and the Rev Counter signal wire.

20XE is early Astra GTE type engine.

C20XE is Cav GSi & Calibra type with Lambda sensor in the manifold.

Late dispac engines will have Blue injectors aswell.

Some early versions have XEJ as an engine code.

LN will be the very late engines with non forged pistons, not so strong crank shaft etc.
