this is mine not very good pic sorry i think the standard cage does not have the cross just a single diagnal very good cage and a very nice bloke aswell:thumb:

Tubes are thicker on that than on your average safety devices cage arnt they?

Sorry to hijack Rick, but can anyone shed any light on the best way of profiling plain ends? I've just bought a custom cages rollcage, but went for the plain end option to save some money.

Best way is with a proper tube notcher, I think Frost auto do a basic one, not sure on the price though. otherwise it's lots of time and constant checking with some form of grinder.

Jim are you loosing the sunroof? I have thought about a custom cages one but not sure i can be ****d removing the sunroof thats why i was looking at a fabricage one.

Won't be losing the sunroof. Will adapt the cage to fit. I bought the kit so it's all individual pieces at the moment. CP and MC are confident we can work around the sunroof - we better had now as the cage is currently in the workshop, lol.

Stu, it was a lot more money for the profiled ends. Again, I'm hoping CP can help out with that, just wanted to know what the best way of doing it was.

if doing it on the slight pieky, a hole saw the same size as the pipe work can profile the ends to make them all fit together.


You could look at a metro/landrover defender sun roof operation and put that to use in the nova with a profiles polycarb pannel (or a sheet of suitable plastic in black ;) )

Will be keeping the sunroof, and it's operation as I can't help thinking it will come in handy during the summer months. Plus, tests have shown that having a sunroof tilted open can actually improve aerodynamics; not by a great deal, but every little helps.

Have you just gont for the 6 point cage jim or one that triangulates to the front strut tops?

hence saying use the metro/defender opening mechanism, so you get rid of the slide function and lose the mech that stops a cage going in nice and tight to the roof line :)

Just gone for the 6 point cage rick. Whilst the car is a bare shell i might secure it to the strut tops too. With the contacts we have at the farm I'm sure I could get some extra tube from somewhere.

Stu, I still like the idea of being able to wind it right the way back if needed. Plus, it will mean removing the headlining which will leave a pig of a job and I'm not sure I want to go down that route. Will give it some thought when I'm at that point though, cheers for the heads up.

Ric, the other good thing about custom cages is they aren't to far away so I was able to collect it rather than paying delivery. Will be more than happy to collect one for you (should you go for one) and drop it off next time I'm going past yours.

Hmm not sure i want the hassle of removing the roof lining so it can be welded in! After all the lining was ?200! lol Thanks though jim

Hi Jim

Found this idea to assist in profiling the tubing from another website !!


There's a very handy program out there called TUBEMITER.EXE
You can download it from here= http://www.ihpva.org/people/tstrike/tubemiter.exe (http://www.ihpva.org/people/tstrike/tubemiter.exe) (right click and save as)

Just download the program and then run it.
Goto 'FILE' and 'SETTINGS' change the specifications to the join you want to make (both tube diameters/thicknesses and the angle they join at)
This should give you something like this:

Then select print, trim around the outline
wrap it around your tube and transfer the line onto the tube
and grind away with a trusty old angle grinder until you match the line.





Not tried it yet - but it looks like a very good idea (Believe me http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/nod.gif - I spent weeks profiling my cage tubing - This program would of made things so much easier !!)



If you can afford it - get a cage with profiled ends - I bought mine without because the rear section has major differences to a standard nova ;) ;) if you know what I mean :thumb: :thumb:

Forgot about that program! Just make sure you get the print-out lined up properly if you go down that route, and measure each length as often as you can.
